- At some point, I found I preferred plays, and the possibility of directing. With some borrowed equipment, I made a film about the homeless, and because of that I got into the American Film Institute as a fellow. Robert Wise loved the film and I got a fellowship. Sydney Pollack would come and talk and make you feel it was possible.
- I like to see visual metaphors. Not a lot of dialogue. Fellini and Kurosawa worked it best. What are the images telling you? Films are visceral.
- A great writer should not be using stereotypes. I strive for a real, specific male and a specific female.
- Robert Benton writes great women's roles and he's a man.
- The lack of women is particularly ominous because while women have been excluded from directing and cinematography for years, they've always written scripts.
