Rami Malek’s Transformation into the Queen Frontman When Rami Malek took on the role of Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody, expectations were sky-high. Not only did he need to capture the essence of the legendary performer, but fans were also curious whether his portrayal would include actual singing. The anticipation was palpable, considering the iconic status of Queen’s music and Mercury’s distinctive vocal prowess. Jan Sewell, responsible for Malek’s makeup and prosthetics, noted that he was “totally up for everything”, setting the stage for an immersive transformation. This dedication to authenticity would later culminate in Malek’s Oscar-winning performance, a testament...

“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” got a big boost in the Oscar race for Best Makeup and Hairstyling by winning both of its bids at the guild honors on April 3. The Netflix film was honored for its period makeup and period hairstyling at the 8th annual Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards on Saturday.
One of its Oscar rivals – “Pinocchio” — claimed the special effects prize. Two of the other Oscar nominees were shut out as “Hillbilly Elegy” lost all three of its races here and “Mank” was blanked twice over. The fifth contender at the Academy Awards, “Emma,” was overlooked by the guild.
Conversely the other big winner at the Muahs Awards, “Bird of Prey,” was snubbed by the makeup and hairstyling branch of the academy. It won both contemporary categories here.

The Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild got a jump on the Oscars by announcing nominations on February 18. But don’t look for four-time contender “Bill & Ted Face the Music” or three-timer “Mulan” on the list of Oscar nominees for Best Makeup and Hairstyling when that roster is revealed on March 15. They didn’t make the cut with the academy in phase 1 of voting.
Of the 10 films that remain in the running at the Oscars, “Hillbilly Elegy” reaped three bids with the guild; “Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn),” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “Mank” earned two apiece; and “Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey” and “Pinocchio” have one each.
The other four films shortlisted by the makeup artists and hair stylists branch of the academy — “Emma,” “The Glorias,”
“The Little Things” and “One Night in Miami” — were snubbed by the guild.

Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody Photo: 21st Century Fox
Winning this year’s Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Drama, Bohemian Rhapsody has been getting a lot of attention, its appeal clearly extending beyond the hard core of passionate Queen fans. One of the things for which it has been praised is make-up and hairstyling, which helped it to recreate the appearance of the band in their youth, carry them convincingly through the years and ensure that their stage performances dazzled as they should. Jan Sewell, who led the team responsible, told us about working with Oscar-nominated actor Rami Malek, capturing the essence of Freddie Mercury, and getting the approval of Brian May.
“I was working on a film called Tomb Raider with the producer Graham King, and he started talking about this project,” she tells me, by way of explaining how she came on board with the film.

Marvel’s zeitgeist-grabbing “Black Panther” dominated the Oscar craft races on Tuesday, grabbing six nominations for costume design, production design, score (composer Ludwig Göransson), song (“All the Stars”), sound editing, and sound mixing.
But it was snubbed for visual effects after being talked up as a frontrunner, and cinematographer Rachel Morrison missed out on her second nomination after breaking the glass ceiling for last year’s “Mudbound.” While the VFX branch may have deemed the effects as too supportive, Morrison perhaps fell prey to the confusion surrounding where cinematography ends and VFX begins.

Controversies aside, Rami Malek did a great job portraying Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in the biopic Bohemian Rhapsody. He nailed the vocals, he totally got the look, and he convinced the team to allow him to incorporate more of Mercury's sexuality in the film. But there's one facet of Malek's insane transformation that we simply can't get over: he even wore a pair of artificial teeth to re-create the Queen frontman's pronounced overbite, which was due to four additional incisors the singer was born with.

Marvel’s “Black Panther” is being called the X-factor in the Oscar craft races, and could dominate on Tuesday, grabbing somewhere between four and eight nominations. That’s primarily because of the imaginative and opulent depiction of African culture and black identity through Wakanda.
It’s world building at its finest, thanks to director Ryan Coogler’s social consciousness and detailed collaboration with production designer Hannah Beachler, costume designer Ruth Carter, and cinematographer Rachel Morrison. Together, they created a powerful force of Afrofuturism that elevated the McU.

“In all the movies I’ve done, I’ve never quite seen this confluence of people’s belief in the project they’re working on,” says “Bohemian Rhapsody” cinematographer Newton Thomas Sigel. The film has generated a lot of press for its behind-the-scenes drama (director Bryan Singer was fired before shooting was completed), so the veteran cameraman admits he was “concerned that all this unbelievable effort and love that people were putting into it would be for naught.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Sigel above.

Five of the seven semi-finalists for Best Makeup & Hairstyling at the Oscars — “Black Panther,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Mary Queen of Scots,” “Stan & Ollie” and “Vice” — reaped bids with the guild, which announced nominations in five film categories on Thursday, Jan. 10 (halfway through the Oscar nominations voting period). The other two Academy Awards semi-finalists — the Swedish film “Border” and Luca Guadagnino‘s remake of “Suspiria” — was snubbed by the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild.

This Oscar season Best Makeup and Hairstyling was all about dramatic transformations, making Rami Malek (“Bohemian Rhapsody”), Christian Bale (“Vice”), and Tilda Swinton (“Suspiria”) unrecognizable as Freddie Mercury, Dick Cheney, and an 85-year-old male psychotherapist and horrifying witch.
Likewise, Eva Melander was made unrecognizable as a troll in the fantastical “Border,” Sweden’s Best Foreign Language entry. And the sprawling cast of Marvel’s “Black Panther” undergo dramatic transformations to become the citizens of Wakanda.
Transforming Malek into Mercury for “Bohemian Rhapsody” required reverse aging on the part of makeup and hair designer Jan Sewell. That’s because the climactic Live Aid concert was shot first. The task required an assortment of wigs, eye makeup, and artificial nose to compensate for Malek’s smaller eyes.
But the biggest challenge was re-creating Mercury’s legendary teeth because of his overbite. Sewell had three sets made to find the right fit for Malek.

Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury (“Bohemian Rhapsody”) and Christian Bale as Dick Cheney (“Vice”) lead the shortlist contenders for this season’s Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar.
Joining them are Tilda Swinton’s wild transformation in “Suspiria,” the fantastical look of Swedish foreign-language entry “Border,” the authenticity of “Mary Queen of Scots,” and Laurel & Hardy’s recreation in “Stan & Ollie.” While “Black Panther” made the cut, notably, Best Picture contenders “A Star Is Born” and “The Favourite” were both shut out.
However, the race has come down to a battle of the biopics between Mercury and Cheney. Hair and makeup head Jan Sewell transformed Malek into the flamboyant Queen singer/songwriter, making use of a prosthetic nose, eye makeup, an assortment of wigs, and, most crucially, a set of prosthetic teeth to approximate his famous overbite.

“It was something I had to take quite seriously,” says makeup and hair designer Jan Sewell about her work on “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Turning Rami Malek into “Queen” frontman Freddie Mercury was a daunting challenge given that “everybody knew who Freddie was, and he was hugely loved. So I knew it was a big responsibility.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Sewell above.

Yet Sewell, who previously turned Eddie Redmayne into Stephen Hawking for “The Theory of Everything” (2014), believes “it’s not about making someone look exactly like them. It’s about the essence of the person.” So she set about changing “lots of small, little things” about Malek’s face, such as his nose and hair. Capturing the energy and flamboyance of Queen frontman Freddie Mercury for Fox's Bohemian Rhapsody meant a dramatic transformation for Rami Malek, best known as the twitchy lead character in USA's TV drama Mr. Robot. When Sacha Baron Cohen left the Freddie Mercury biopic back in 2013, it was hard to imagine another chameleon who could step into the skin of the flamboyant 1970s-80s musical genius who died at 45 after battling AIDS. Then came Mr. Robot star Rami Malek who went from playing a paranoid introvert on the USA series, to portraying one of the rock world’s loudest game-changing extroverts in Bohemian Rhapsody. Stepping into the shoes of a recent celebrity is one of the most daunting assignments an actor can face; how do you meet the expectations of audiences familiar with the subject without coming off like a Las Vegas impersonator? But after an extensive physical and psychological prep, Malek fit the part of Mercury like a glove.
How did the role of Freddie Mercury come to your attention? Were you tracking it?
I was not tracking it all. I was unaware of it.

Rami Malek spoke about becoming Freddie Mercury for the upcoming Queen biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody, during an interview on The Tonight Show Monday. Malek said his transformation began with a pair of fake teeth he had to wear to mimic the buckteeth that earned Mercury the childhood nickname, “Bucky.” “The first time I put them in my mouth I was incredibly insecure,” Malek said. “And then I found myself compensating. I started sitting up straight and being more elegant – he had the best posture. You start to think, ‘Oh, these are...

The first time makeup, hair and prosthetics designer Jan Sewell met Rami Malek while prepping for “Bohemian Rhapsody,” she spent a lot of time studying his face. But she was also gauging how far the actor was willing to go to look like Freddie Mercury, the iconic rock star he plays in the Queen biopic from Fox, which opens in theaters Nov. 2.
“Some actors love makeup, and some actors are not so keen. He was totally up for everything, and I loved that,” says Sewell, whose credits include “The Theory of Everything,” “The Danish Girl” and “Tomb Raider.”
One of her first priorities was to commission teeth specialist Chris Lyons of Fangs FX to craft prosthetic teeth resembling those of the late singer. Initially, she instructed Lyons to replicate the size of Mercury’s actual teeth, but they overwhelmed Malek’s face. After some experimenting, they found a scaled-down version that worked.

Leave it to the Brits! The BAFTA nominations were announced and they gave us a slightly different look at the awards season! For instance, Tom McCarthy's "Spotlight," the leading Oscar contender in the U.S. just received 3 noms including Best Film, Supporting Actor for Mark Ruffalo and Original Screenplay. No Director nomination for McCarthy.
Meanwhile, Steven Spielberg's "Bridge of Spies," a handsomely-produced period piece led the pack along with Todd Haynes' "Carol," another handsomely-produced period piece. Both films garnered nine nominations each including Best Picture. "Bridge of Spies" and "Carol" will duke it out with "Spotlight," Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu's "The Revenant" (eight nominations), and Adam McKay's "The Big Short" (five nominations) for the Best Picture trophy.
So where's "Mad Max: Fury Road" and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" you ask? They're relegated to the technical categories. Apparently, sequels, no matter how great they are, can't compete with originals.

This story originally appeared in “The Look” section of the Nominations/SAG/Golden Globes issue of TheWrap magazine. Jan Sewell thought she was getting a gig to transform her friend Eddie Redmayne into Stephen Hawking for what would be the actor’s Oscar-winning turn in “The Theory of Everything.” But that film led her straight to a second film, “The Danish Girl,” which proved to be an education in the trans experience and the artists and people at its forefront, courtesy of director Tom Hooper. “Eddie and Tom were very keen and responsible,” Sewell said of the process. “Eddie especially brought me everything I.

The subtle craft of transforming transgender pioneer Lili Elbe (Eddie Redmayne) in "The Danish Girl" is one of the great stories this awards season involving production design, cinematography, hair/makeup and costume design. For Eve Stewart, the way into the production design was through the celebratory paintings of Elbe's wife, Gerda (Alicia Vikander), along with the dramatic difference in settings (restrictive Copenhagen vs. progressive Paris, though actually shot in Brussels). For hair/makeup designer Jan Sewell and costume designer Paco Delgado, the contrasts in hair coloring, facial sculpting and fashion were crucial to the feminization of Elbe (born Einar Wegene), who became the first known recipient of sex reassignment surgery. (Additionally, cinematographer Danny Cohen played with light to explore the physical and emotional journey and made subtle adjustments in camera height to accentuate Elbe's feminine side.) "It's very peculiar,...
