Near the top of the list of movies we do not recommend as a date picture, no way no how, Wes Craven’s gut-wrencher presented a real problem for critics. Whose movie exactly is this? The producer wanted a commercially daring pornographic gore shocker. The writer-director envisioned a political scream of rage against America he considered Evil. Is the film an abomination, or an honest reflection of society in chaos?

“I wonder what the meanest, foulest, rottenest, woodsiest sex crime ever was?”
Fred Lincoln was a giant in the adult film industry, directing and acting in hundreds of porno films from the early 70’s up until about 5 five years ago when his health began to decline. We Are Movie Geeks doesn’t cover porn, but like his costar David Hess (who died in October of 2011), Lincoln would have gone done in history as one of the slimiest degenerates in the movies if he had appeared in nothing except the 1972 rape and revenge classic Last House On The Left where he played the repellent villain Weasel Padowski (a name he sometimes used as a pseudonym for his porn directing). Director Wes Craven’s first film was one of the most notorious movies ever made, offending nearly everyone who saw it, and 40 years later, it hasn’t lost any of its edge.

David Hess would have gone done in history as one of the slimiest creeps in the movies if he had appeared in nothing except the 1972 rape and revenge classic Last House On The Left as the repellent lead villain Krug. Director Wes Craven’s first film was one of the most notorious movies ever made, offending nearly everyone who saw it, and 40 years later, it hasn’t lost any of its edge. (Garrett Dillahunt was actually fine as Krug in the 2009 remake but any actor would have come off as Mr. Rogers compared to Hess’ sadistic portrayal). His character is so brutal and abhorrent that even his fellow murderers are afraid of him. In one of the movie’s most memorable scenes, Krug orders one of his accomplices, more precisely his own son (played by Marc Sheffler) to “…blow your brains out!”, at which point the terrified kid shoots himself in the head.

I’m sure many of those who visit the Fango site can agree with me or share the fact that I don’t only love horror. While horror speaks to me and gets me more excited than pretty much any other type of film, I am an all-around lover of movies and all-around nerd for them. One of the sites, I visit without a doubt multiple times a day is Chud, and it’s because they love everything and walk the finest line between all-out geekdom and intelligent looks at the power cinema holds. They know their shit, and they know it well.
If you’re a follower of the site, you know who Devin Faraci is (and for that matter, Alex Riviello, who does some work for Fango as well, flexing his vast horror expertise). Devin is one of its most popular and well-spoken writers. Yesterday, he posted a quick list entitled,...

Last weekend, visitors to Fangoria.com, along with our friends and followers on Twitter and MySpace got a window into the world of our Los Angeles Weekend of Horrors. Through our first-ever Live webcast from a Fango event, those that couldn't be there with us in-person were given the rare opportunity to chat Live with some of our favorite horror celebrities, unannounced surprise guests, and up-and-coming independent filmmakers.
While the weekend may be over, clips from the Live event are being made available as a part of our "archive stream", so everyone can re-live the experience.
The guest list for the webcast was immense, with a completely casual, and unscheduled approach, tying into the "You never know who might show up!" tagline. Among those who popped in: Toby Wilkins (Splinter, The Grudge 3), Mick Garris (Masters Of Horror), Neil Marshall (Doomsday, The Descent), Darren Lynn Bousman (Saw II-IV, Repo!

No matter what your personal feelings are for The Last House On The Left, there’s no denying the fact that Wes Craven ain’t no Ingmar Bergman. Craven’s landmark exploitation ripoff of Bergman’s lyrical 1960 melodrama The Virgin Spring—itself still one of the most beautifully harrowing films ever made—remains controversial, with as many people debating its technical merits as its dubious content.
And while, cinematically, Last House doesn’t boast an iota of the sophisticated impact that the Bergman original had, it is nevertheless ground zero for explicit onscreen sadism. As such, it still maintains a fervent following.
MGM is counting on those legions of loyal Krug-ites to take advantage of their latest cash-in, a so-called “Collector’s Edition” DVD whose timing lines up with the release of the new Dennis Iliadis-directed remake. Chances are any serious aficionado of this film has already purchased one of the superior editions,...

The boys over at DVD Active got a very nice look at the cover for the upcoming Special Edition re-release of Wes Craven’s Last House on the Left. Though it’s got a bit of the retro feel, it’s still not ideal, but it is better than the cover for the older release so I can’t complain, can I?

MGM Home Entertainment gave Fango the cover art seen below for its upcoming Collector’s Edition of The Last House On The Left. The new DVD of Wes Craven and Sean S. Cunningham’s groundbreaking shocker streets February 24 through Fox Home Entertainment.
The disc contains over 80 minutes of special features that include all-new interviews, plus a commentary by stars David Hess, Marc Sheffler and Fred Lincoln not heard on MGM’s previous Last House DVD (though the talk track by Craven and Cunningham from that edition isn’t replicated on this one, so don’t get rid of those old discs!). We previously gave a full rundown on the supplements here; retail price is $19.98. This release ties in with the theatrical debut of Rogue Pictures’ Last House remake, said to be set for early March.

As is usually the case, a remake of a classic horror film (in this case the one coming up from Rogue) means a special edition of the original will make its way to DVD. In the case of Wes Craven’s Last House on the Left, it’s a long overdue catch up.
Styd got word on the new Last House edition, including the fairly extensive list of features MGM will fit onto the DVD. I hope they avoid putting it on Blu-ray; there’s just no need.

Writer-director David DeFalco is about to begin shooting "The House in the Middle of Nowhere," a horror film inspired by the 1972 Wes Craven classic The Last House on the Left. Although not a remake of the Craven film, the new film will employ two cast members from the Craven film: David Hess, who played Krug Stillo in 1972, returns as a racist sheriff, and Marc Sheffler, who played Junior Stillo in Left, will produce the new film along with Steven J. Bernheim. Kevin Gage (Blow) has been cast as the lead convict, and other cast members include Sage Stallone (Daylight), Deborah Lacey (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) and Chantal Berry.
