Exclusive: A little over a month after Season 3 of Resident Alien wrapped its run on Syfy, the future of the quirky sci-fi comedy-drama is up in the air. And there is some intrigue over where the series starring Alan Tudyk would continue should it get a fourth season.
I hear there are talks about Resident Alien moving from Syfy to NBCU cable sibling USA Network, which currently doesn’t have scripted originals besides Chucky, which it shares with Syfy. According to sources, a return to Syfy appears unlikely, so USA is Resident Alien‘s only feasible destination within NBCU, whose UCP division produces the adaptation of the comic book by Peter Hogan and Steve Parkhouse.
But a potential Season 4 pickup by USA would come with a major budget reduction, as much as $500,000 an episode, which will be challenging, I hear.

[Warning: The below contains spoilers for Season 3, Episode 8 of Resident Alien, “Homecoming.”] The end of Resident Alien Season 3 was a doozy. The episode, titled “Homecoming,” dropped bombshell after bombshell, from the moon being a full-on spaceship to Harry (Alan Tudyk) being body-snatched by a Mantid and beyond. While Syfy has not yet renewed the hit sci-fi-comedy for a fourth season, some of the details of what’ll happen if and when the show returns are starting to come into our orbit. Here’s a look at everything we know about Resident Alien Season 4 so far. Will Asta realize Harry’s been body-swapped? Now that Harry (Alan Tudyk) has had his body taken over by a Mantid (voiced by Clancy Brown), fans are probably wondering whether the humans in his life will recognize the change of demeanor — Max Hawthorne (Judah Prehn) certainly noticed some differences in his grown-up foe. Showrunner Chris Sheridan told TVinsider, though, even his closest pal Asta...

Turns out, Resident Alien‘s Harry and Asta are like (space)ships passing in the night. “This is an exclusive,” revealed showrunner Chris Sheridan when he and the cast visited TV Insider at the Television Critics Association winter press event in Pasadena last month, as you can watch in the video interview above. “When I pitched [the show], you know, I had to come up with the whole first season and then a little bit of the second season, a little of the third season…I had them getting together in the second season.” Adding that he “knew it was possible it wouldn’t go there,” Sheridan nonetheless had the idea to put Harry and Asta—who do get together in the comic books—in a romance. “They get together, there’s a baby, all this stuff…That was several years before anyone was cast in the show.” Alan Tudyk and Sara Tomko,...

If you're a fan of the Broadway play Rent, then you know you can measure a year with five hundred twenty-five thousand, six hundred minutes.
Resident Alien Season 3 Episode 3 offered another view that in the span of Earth's history, by comparison, a human life is 141 seconds.
Now, we don't know where that stat came from, but it sure is a sobering thought to how little we matter in the overall scheme of things.
Harry often finds interesting points like that now that he's come around to humanity.
He just wraps his head around how humans care so much about certain things until he has the same experience in his life, and it all comes together for him.
As the episode began, Harry Vanderspiegel wondered why humans think they deserve any better treatment than every other life force on earth that must fight to survive.

If you wondered how well change would fare for our favorite earth-bound alien, by the end of Resident Alien Season 3 Episode 2, it's clear there was nothing to fear.
Cast members change, and storylines evolve, but Harry Vanderspeigel remains the same. His inner reflections often betray his actions, much to our enjoyment.
The other Patience residents are also in self-discovery mode, which has given new life to the series, which is now in its third season. That's not always an easy accomplishment, but Chris Sheridan does it with ease.
How Does More People Knowing Harry's Secret Impact the Story?
Early in the series, Harry spent a good portion of his time learning to live as a human (dun dun!). The rest of his time was devoted to dispelling any creeping notions of humanity while keeping his origins a secret.

The search for the next "Suits" has begun! Aaron Korsh's legal drama series gained a whole new lease on life in 2023 thanks to Netflix, becoming the year's most-streamed show and giving USA Network's loyal middle-aged target demographic a reason to fist pump in vindication. The only question now is, what lucky show will follow in its footsteps? Surprisingly, an unlikely candidate has emerged in the form of "Resident Alien," a genre-blending cult favorite that's currently in the process of airing its third season on Syfy.
Anchored by fan-favorite performer and voice actor extraordinaire Alan Tudyk (the man who clucked his way into audiences' hearts as Heihei in "Moana" and wooed his own butt as Clayface in "Harley Quinn: A Very Problematic Valentine's Day Special"), "Resident Alien" has managed to climb its way into Netflix's Top 10 in the U.S. According to the streaming viewership aggregator FlixPatrol, it was...

To paraphrase Harry Vanderspeigle, this is not some bulls**t. Season 3 of Syfy‘s hilariously twisted Resident Alien is about to turn up the heat on the residents of snowy Patience, Colorado, as confirmed in this behind-the-scenes reel that was just screened for the TV Critics Association winter press tour in Pasadena. And we have your exclusive first look at the clip. “What we try to do this year is really start moving in the walls and crunching down the alien threat on everyone by design,” showrunner Chris Sheridan told us a week earlier. “The first couple of seasons were some alien stuff with a lot of character development, but we’re really ratcheting it up in Season 3. There’s more alien threat and there’s higher stakes. And Harry is, as always, in the middle of all of it while also trying to deal with his own emotional stuff.

The following contains mild spoilers for Resident Alien.
Resident Alien is about much more than just Harry Vandesrpiegle (Alan Tudyk), a disguised alien pretending to be human in the town of Patience, Colorado. Yes, there’s plenty of awkward comedy as he tries to blend in and make sense of the oddities of human behavior, but the show also uses his abrasive personality and pointed commentary to illuminate the similar problems many of his neighbors are also dealing with.
That the show gives each and every member of its sprawling cast such clearly defined layers is part of the reason it’s so darn great to begin with, but what makes it truly remarkable is that these characters all have journeys and arcs of their own that exist completely separately from Harry and the threat of alien annihilation. Asta (Sara Tomko) is attempting to build bridges with the daughter she gave up for adoption.

Resident Alien -Pictured: Alan Tudyk as Harry Vanderspeigle — (Photo by: Eike Shroter/Syfy) Midway through its second season on SyFy, Resident Alien has definitely found its groove, as the series — starring Alan Tudyk as an alien tasked with extinguishing the human race who finds himself stuck in a small Colorado town while he struggles to complete his mission — continues to get strong reviews from critics and love from the network, which has already renewed it for a third season. As we’ve gotten to know Tudyk’s character better, we’ve seen him slip into his alien tongue on a number of occasions. It’s been fun for both Tudyk and the show’s creator and executive producer, Chris Sheridan; they told us the show’s scripts often allow for improvisation, especially when it comes to his native language, and it’s been interesting to watch it evolve. Phoning home is not an option! The titular E.T. Syfy’s Resident Alien will be staying on Earth for a while longer.
The NBCUniversal cable network has given an early third-season renewal to the series. The pickup comes three weeks ahead of Resident Alien’s return for the back half of its second season on Aug. 10.
Resident Alien stars Alan Tudyk as Harry, an extraterrestrial who’s sent to Earth on a mission to destroy all humans. After crash landing, he takes on the identity of a doctor and struggles with the moral ambiguity of his mission. The second half of season two will deal with the fallout from Asta’s (Sara Tomko) actions to save Harry’s life.

One of TV's best dramedies is sticking around.
Syfy has officially picked up Resident Alien Season 3.
Deadline first reported the news, revealing that the episode order is set to clock in at around 12 episodes.
It's unclear at this stage whether the cabler will employ the split season strategy adopted for Resident Alien Season 2.
The Alan Tudyk drama is set to return for the back half of its season on August 10.
The series ranks among this year’s top 15 most-watched cable series and top 5 most-watched cable dramas, averaging 2.3 million viewers in L+7.
Across all airings, it has reached nearly 11 million viewers, which is an excellent figure for a cable drama.
Harry and Asta “must deal with the emotional fallout of the night all while searching for the alien baby — a search that leads to big realizations for each of them,” according to the description for the second half of the season.

We're still not fond of the decision to split up Resident Alien Season 2, but at least we have a premiere date for the back half of the season.
Syfy confirmed Friday that the Alan Tudyk-led dramedy will touch down on screens on Wednesday, August 10.
The second season was expanded and split down the middle, meaning we still have eight new episodes to look forward to.
Harry and Asta “must deal with the emotional fallout of the night all while searching for the alien baby — a search that leads to big realizations for each of them,” according to the description for the new episodes.
“Meanwhile, Sheriff Mike (Corey Reynolds) and Deputy Liv (Elizabeth Bowen) solve a big case, Ben (Levi Fiehler) attempts to sell Patience on a new resort and D’Arcy (Alice Wetterlund) fights the challenge of a lifetime.”

It’s been a long four months since Resident Alien left us with its midseason cliffhanger but the wait is almost over! The big-hearted, demented Syfy dramedy resumes its perfectly hilarious second season on August 10, and according to showrunner Chris Sheridan, the action is picking up with the gunsmoke barely cleared from Asta (Sara Tomko) shooting that guy from New York who wanted to kill Harry (Alan Tudyk). And as you can see from this exclusive first-look trailer, they have a lot more to handle. “We’re going right into it. There’s too much going on,” Sheridan says, noting that it’s not just the matter of Asta and Harry explaining away a dead man to witness D’arcy (Alice Wetterlund), or even how they dispose of him. There’s also a rogue baby alien on the loose, an assassin from another planet hunting folks, and the fact that...

“There’s been a lot of big swings on this show,” declares Chris Sheridan about “Resident Alien” in our recent webchat. He continues, “There are just ridiculous things that you do in this job. Every one of them was like, ‘are we kicked off the air after this?’ It does remind me a lot of early days on ‘Family Guy’ when you’re carving this path and don’t know if it’s going to be accepted. But there’s so many shows on the air, anything that we can do to make our show feel exciting and different, gives you confidence to keep doing weird stuff.’” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Will Resident Alien‘s General McCallister ever come face to face with Alan Tudyk’s peculiar E.T. Harry Vanderspeigle? Even Linda Hamilton, the actress behind the show’s main antagonist, isn’t quite sure. Yet despite her limited screen time and the many questions surrounding her character’s looming presence, the actress is having a blast as she waits to unravel more of McCallister’s sinister plans.

Strong viewership is certainly not alien to “Resident Alien,” but the show’s Season 2 premiere was Syfy’s second-most-watched telecast since 2015.
Syfy’s most-watched episode of TV over that roughly eight-year time span was “Resident Alien” Episode 106, so, Episode 201 is in pretty familiar — and rarified — company.
Including one week of delayed viewing, the Jan. 26, 2022 “Resident Alien” Season 2 premiere was watched by 3.2 million total viewers. That’s up 5% from the Season 1 premiere, another rarity on television these days.
Among adults 18-49, the premiere vs. premiere increase was 2%. Growth (on a percentage basis) was the same in the adults 25-54 demographic.
“Resident Alien” Season 1 averaged 2.917 million total viewers per episode. That made “Resident Alien” Syfy’s most-watched new drama in nearly eight years — or since the first season of “Defiance” averaged 3.224 million viewers in 2013.

Harry Vanderspeigle may be back in Patience, Colo., but he doesn’t have to be happy about it.
In the Season 2 premiere of Resident Alien, Harry’s ship crash-lands back on Earth, and when he comes to, he’s in the hospital suffering one hilarious identity crisis. (He even tells a nurse he’s an alien sent here to kill everyone, but she chalks it all up to head trauma!) By the time Asta arrives, Harry’s completely off his rocker, clueless as to who he is and what his mission was, causing her to work overtime to keep him (and the truth) in check.

It is a safe assumption that anyone with even a casual awareness of popular culture knows an Alan Tudyk performance.
For science fiction fans, Tudyk may be Wash from Firefly, or K-2So from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. For fans of comic-book-based shows, he’s Joker and Clayface on Harley Quinn, or Mr. Nobody on Doom Patrol. Disney fans have their pick of comedic villains, and animal sidekicks. From comedies to drama to dramedy, Tudyk has one of the most recognizable and interesting careers in showbusiness.
But it is in his current role, on Syfy’s sci-fi comedy series Resident Alien, that Tudyk is receiving newfound recognition. Premiering its second season Wednesday, Jan. 26, at 9 p.m. Et, the show revolves around Tudyk’s extraterrestrial character who crash lands on our planet while trying to exterminate humanity. Resident Alien Season 2 will touch down on Syfy in early 2022.
Syfy announced Tuesday that the new season of Resident Alien will premiere Wednesday, January 26, at 9/8c.

It is scheduled to return later in the year for the second half of the season.
It is a surprising move, and one that not every fan will like, but it could be down to production issues brought on by the pandemic.

Netflix debuted a trailer for Season 4 of “Cobra Kai,” which premieres on Dec. 31.
The series takes place more than 30 years after the events of the 1984 film “The Karate Kid,” which culminated in Daniel Larusso’s (Ralph Macchio) triumph against Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) at the All Valley Karate Tournament. Their rivalry lasts throughout the decades, but in Season 4, Daniel’s Miyagi-Do and Johnny’s Eagle Fang dojos join forces to take down the Cobra Kai dojo led by their enemy John Kreese (Martin Kove) at the All Valley Under 18 Karate Tournament.
“If Johnny and I can actually work together and we win, Cobra Kai will be out of business,” Daniel says to his wife Amanda (Courtney Henggeler) in the trailer, which you can watch below.
“You gotta take things to the next level,” Johnny says to his students. “Eagles do not respond. They swoop down and take whatever they want.

The first season of Syfy’s comedy-drama series Resident Alien is like the plot of E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial — if, before returning home, E.T. was a surly, not incredibly lovable being, who wanted to kill all humans, and tormented Elliott. So maybe not like E.T. But in tonight’s finale, the alien posing as human Harry Vanderspeigle does finally head back to his world.
However, Harry’s departure from the planet and Patience, Colorado, ends up not being as simple as the Reese’s-loving alien’s. Instead, Harry (Alan Tudyk) ultimately abandons his mission to wipe out humanity in the interest of saving his friend Asta (Sara Tomko). Is Patience, Colo. finally rid of its lanky E.T.? Fat chance.
In Wednesday’s season finale of Resident Alien, Harry was forced to finally decide whether to carry out his initial plan of destroying mankind. With his device intact and ready to annihilate, Harry’s blips of humanity tugged at his heartstrings, and thanks in part to a plea from Asta, Harry opted to leave Earth just as he found it. But after blasting off into space, he discovered little Max tucked away in his spaceship cabin. Looks like Harry just booked a flight back to Colorado, after all.
