A new breed of creature-features was unleashed in the 1990s and continued well into the next decade. Shaking off the ecological messaging of the past, these monsters existed for the sake of pure mayhem. Just to name a few: Tremors, The Relic, Anaconda, Godzilla, Deep Rising and Lake Placid all showcased this trend of irreverent creature chaos. Reptiles and other scaly beasts proved to be a popular source of inspiration for these films, but for that extra crawly experience, bugs were the best and quickest route. Spiders, in particular, led some of the worst infestations on screen in the early 2000s. And on the underbelly of this creeping new wave — specifically the direct-to-video sector — hangs an overlooked offering of spider horror: Arachnid.

The Nightmare on Elm Street franchise has been dormant for over a decade now, and despite the fact that people like Mike Flanagan and Elijah Wood are interested in making Elm Street movies, there are no new films on the horizon. Freddy Krueger’s extended vacation is going to continue a while longer. At least we have several films to revisit – and as part our of Halloween celebrations here at JoBlo and Arrow in the Head, we decided to put together a list ranking those films from worst to best. So keep scrolling down to see our take on Nightmare on Elm Street Movies Ranked.
A Nightmare On Elm Street (2010)

The mythology for the long-running "Friday the 13th" film series has been notoriously shabby and amorphous. At the end of Sean Cunningham's 1980 original slasher, it was revealed that Pamela Voorhees (Betsy Palmer) had witnessed her developmentally disabled son Jason drown in Crystal Lake years earlier, largely thanks to the neglect of the boy's randy, sex-distracted counselors. Pamela set about getting madness-inspired spiritual revenge by murdering any new counselors who deigned to have sex at Camp Crystal Lake. Luckily, Pamela was killed before she could commit any more murders than she already did.
In Steve Miner's "Friday the 13th Part 2," however, it was revealed that Jason (Steve Daskewisz and Warrington Gillette) was still alive, living in the woods for decades, presumably unbeknownst to his mother. But Jason, it is revealed, knew his mother was killing people and witnessed the events of the first "Friday." Why, one will immediately ask,...

November 9th will mark the thirty-ninth anniversary of the release of writer/director Wes Craven‘s classic A Nightmare on Elm Street – and on that same day, a fan with a large amount of money to spare is going to find themselves the owner of (parts of) an original Freddy Krueger glove that was used during the production of both A Nightmare on Elm Street and A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy’s Revenge! The glove is up for auction on PropstoreAuction.com with an opening bid of £100,000 and is expected to go for a price somewhere in the range of £200,000 to £400,000. The auction ends on November 9th.
Here’s the information on the glove. Note that the metal pieces on the glove (including the blade fingers) are the original element, and have been placed on a replica leather glove: Freddy Krueger’s (Robert Englund) screen-matched hero metal...

A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge character Jesse has been recreated as a Bull Airs shoe
A couple weeks ago, the shoe company Bull Airs revealed that they had created a shoe that was designed to look like the Blade character from the Puppet Master franchise. (You can take a look at that shoe Here.) Now they have unveiled a new collection of items that are inspired by the Jesse character from A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge (watch it Here)! This includes the button-up shirt Jesse was wearing during his famous bedroom dance scene, a Freddy-slashed recreation of the hat he wears in the same scene, and… best of all… a shoe that is designed to look like Jesse in that scene, featuring a mixture of his shirt, his jeans, and Freddy’s sweater. Images of the shoe can be seen at the bottom of this article, and more can be found on the Bull Airs website.

The Original Screen-Worn Freddy Glove from the Original ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ Is Up for Auction!
The original Freddy Krueger glove armour – seen in Wes Craven’s horror classic A Nightmare on Elm Street – has been located and put up for auction by Propstore this week.
This prop has been screen-matched, meaning Propstore was able to verify that it’s the very same metal glove armour and razor blade fingers worn by Robert Englund in the original Nightmare on Elm Street! What do they mean by “glove armour,” you might be wondering?
Propstore notes, “Replica rings have been lightly tacked into the finger interiors to allow the metalwork to be displayed on a replica leather work glove, as the original leather glove is no longer present.”
Propstore describes the one-of-a-kind prop as follows: “Freddy Krueger’s (Robert Englund) screen-matched hero metal glove armour and razor blade fingers, with an original hand-drawn design schematic, from Wes Craven’s original A Nightmare on Elm Street and Jack Sholder...

The "Nightmare on Elm Street" film series was a hotbed for emerging talent. Many of the directors in the franchise would go on to prolific or interesting careers. Chuck Russell, director of "A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors" would go on to make Hollywood blockbusters like "The Mask," "Eraser," and "The Scorpion King." Renny Harlin, who directed "A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master" would likewise enter the Hollywood mainstream with films like "Predator 2," "Die Hard 2," "Cliffhanger," and "Cutthroat Island." Jack Sholder, Stephen Hopkins, and Rachael Talalay also emerged from the series' directors pool.
One can also find a few rising actors at the start of their careers throughout the Freddy Krueger movies. Famously, a young Johnny Depp starred in Wes Craven's 1984 original, and, for "Dream Warriors," Patricia Arquette made her cinematic debut.

The horror genre thrives upon cautionary tales where arrogant individuals believe that they can outsmart some supernatural force for their own gain. It’s for this reason that the greed-quenching Djinn and parables where people learn to be careful what they wish for, usually in the most morbid ways possible, are popular horror tropes. Djinn are a fascinating concept, but they’ve struggled to truly make their mark in cinema between largely-forgettable films like Jinn, The Djinn, Wish Upon, and even George Miller’s Three Thousand Years of Longing. But Djinn stories can still be fun and effective in the right context. And Robert Kurtzman’s Wishmaster is still the premier djinn horror film over 25 years later.
Wishmaster is a movie that understands the unabashed joys of a big, dumb plot where there’s a giant magical gemstone that’s the key to the Djinn’s powers because why the hell not?...

People may be surprised to learn that staying out of the ocean won’t guarantee their safety from sharks. In fact, a dip in a river or pond could lead to an encounter with one of the most aggressive sharks in the world: the bull shark. Strangely enough, though, the Carcharhinus leucas doesn’t show up in sharksploitation movies anywhere near as much as its larger and more popular cousin, the great white. Many don’t even know of its existence until they hear of a sighting or attack in an unlikely place.
Jaws led to great whites becoming the face of shark horror. Of course, there are exceptions — Deep Blue Sea features bio-engineered mako sharks, and Syfy went through a period of unleashing one variety of mutant shark after another — yet as a whole, sharksploitation prefers great whites. Then in 2003, TBS Superstation mixed things up by having a bull...

Recently Guillermo del Toro, the Oscar-winning director behind “The Shape of Water,” “Nightmare Alley” and “Pinocchio,” said that collecting physical media, in the midst of streamers unceremoniously deleting thousands of titles, is nothing short of a “moral imperative.” And we agree. Each month new home video releases – of both classic films and newer titles – come out. And each one is cause for celebration. With that in mind, we want to highlight the very best titles of every month.
Here are the biggest and best releases for July 2023.

Scream Factory has announced that they will be bringing the 1981 slasher The Burning (watch it Here) to 4K Uhd this summer – on July 11th, to be exact – and they’re taking pre-orders at This Link. While supplies last, fans who order the 4K Uhd / Blu-ray set through the Scream Factory website will receive an exclusive 18” X 24” rolled poster featuring the original theatrical artwork. The price is $35.99.
The movie is a very cool slasher and I think Scream Factory has chosen an ideal release date for it, as it’s a great one to put on during the summer.
Directed by Tony Maylam, who also crafted the story with Bob Weinstein, Peter Lawrence, Brad Grey, and, unfortunately, Harvey Weinstein, The Burning has the following synopsis: At summer camp, some teenagers pull a prank on the camp’s caretaker, Cropsy. But the joke goes terribly wrong, and the teens leave Cropsy for...

Jacques Haitkin, who served as the cinematographer on the first two Nightmare on Elm Street movies, has died. He was 72.
Haitkin died March 21 in San Francisco after a battle with Als and leukemia, his son Zak Haitkin told The Hollywood Reporter. “He always said he never worked a day in his life because he loved his job so much,” he noted.
Haitkin also manned a camera and/or did second-unit work on three Fast & Furious films, two Captain America movies and other action features including Cherry 2000 (1987), Last Man Standing (1995), The Expendables (2010), X-Men: First Class (2011), Kong: Skull Island (2017), Black Panther (2018), Venom (2018) and 21 Bridges (2019).
Haitkin was the D.P. on A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), directed by Wes Craven, and A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge (1985), directed by Jack Sholder. He reunited with Craven on Shocker (1989) and with Sholder on The Hidden (1987) and Beeper (2002).

Among horror fans, "A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors" is generally regarded as one of the best entries of the fantasy slasher franchise, which is now nine films deep. It's the entry that cemented Freddy Krueger as the wisecracking child killer he's known as now, an evolution that took creator Wes Craven's original concept and expanded it to give his monster more commercial appeal.
The third installment comes along on the success of "A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge," a sequel that, like its predecessor, follows a teenager battling the evil spirit of a scarred, blade-gloved child killer. Freddy operates in the dream world, and his signature striped sweater and filthy brown fedora are often the last things his victims see before their dream death and corresponding real-world death. New Line Cinema struck gold with the "Nightmare" movies; their baddie, unlike the hulking Jason Voorhees or strong,...

No movie fundamentally changed the horror genre as much as the original Halloween. The Shape’s iconic debut inspired — and continues to inspire — countless other slashers. And while most of these movies are only vaguely similar to Halloween, such as Friday the 13th, others were more blatant in their design and execution.
The flicks in question aren’t always set on Halloween, the victim doesn’t have to be a babysitter, and the antagonist may or may not even be masked. However, despite the superficial differences, these ten examples are unmistakably influenced by Michael Myers’ first killing spree.

One of my great memories from the, put one way, debatable year of 2020 was Criterion Channel’s “’70s Horror,” a program that did what it said on the tin while offering discoveries aplenty—Texas Chain Saw next to Let’s Scare Jessica to Death, Deathdream given equal prominence as The Wicker Man. It is of course a delight to see they’re picking up their own baton with next month’s “’80s Horror,” which again runs a canon-to-obscurity gamut. Scanners, Near Dark, and Prince of Darkness will of course appear, but I’d just as soon direct people to Wolfen, Society, and The Keep—which made my jaw drop just a bit, given how averse Michael Mann seems towards any exhibition of it.

Upon reading a mind-blowing story about a young Cambodian child, who was terrified to sleep and then died while apparently dreaming, filmmaker Wes Craven conjured up a sleep demon for a screenplay. Freddy Krueger was born out of a real-life wave of similar incidents that swept across America in the 1980s. The 1984 slasher film, produced by New Line's Robert Shaye, saved the company from disaster and put it immovably on the map. It reinvented the slasher genre at a time when the horror subgenre was on its way out. By leaning into the universal human experience of sleep, it brought genuine fear to the surface again.
In the coming years, Freddy Krueger has haunted our dreams across six sequels, a vs. movie with Jason Voorhees, and a 2010 remake, starring Rooney Mara and Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy himself.

Horror movie sets can be the happiest places on earth, where air-powered cannons paint fake blood murals and human torsos can bite. At other times, a setback in the VFX department can cause delays and tension on the set. That's how a prosthetic tongue threatened to derail a scene in Jack Sholder's 1985 slasher sequel, "A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge."
"Freddy's Revenge" picks up half a decade after the events of "A Nightmare on Elm Street," with new occupants in Nancy Thompson's old home. Among the incoming Walsh family are patriarch Ken, wife Cheryl, daughter Angela (a decades-long fixture on "Days of Our Lives"), and teenage son Jesse, played by Mark Patton.

Fantastic Fest will be making its long-awaited return to in-person festival events in Austin this September, and per usual, the lineup is heavy on delightfully bizarre horror films from around the world.
In addition to the impeccable selection of genre fare the festival has come to be known for, the lineup also features several Cannes favorites that are sure to be players throughout the fall festival season. Ruben Östlund’s Palme d’Or winning “Triangle of Sadness” will make its U.S. premiere, closing out the festival. The U.S. premiere of Park Chan-wook’s “Decision to Leave” is also headed to Fantastic Fest, and the director will be in attendance to accept a lifetime achievement award for his mind-bending body of work, which includes films like “Oldboy” and “The Handmaiden.”

For years, Fantastic Fest, the annual genre film festival in Austin, Texas, has been one of the best kept secrets on the festival circuit. Taking place at one theater (the Alamo Drafthouse on South Lamar), it’s an endlessly delightful cornucopia of exploding heads, talking animals and deviant sex (sometimes all in the same movie). This year’s festival features 21 world premieres, 14 North American premieres and 21 U.S. premieres, with a mixture of mainstream fare (Paramount’s new horror movie “Smile” will have its premiere at the festival) and the endearingly esoteric.
The festival will once again take over the Alamo Drafthouse from Sept. 22-29 and on the web via a virtual Ff@Home experience from Sept. 29-Oct. 4.
Among the many delights of this year’s festival include the opening night premiere of “Smile,” the U.S. premiere of Park Chan-wook’s “Decision to Leave,” with the closing night film being “Triangle of Sadness,...

While the 1970s and 1980s were strong decades for independent horror filmmaking, the 1990s proved to be a somewhat interesting time, as there seemed to be an overall tendency for this realm of the industry to be focused on making sequels and creating franchises out of ’80s horror hits, with a few landmark indie horror projects in the mix as well. And since sequels were so dominant at that time, I thought it only made sense for us to start there for this look back on the history of ’90s indie horror cinema.
After the 1980s proved to be a great time for indie horror, where so many movies ended up being successful due to a combination of theatrical releases and the increasing popularity of home video, it feels like in the decade that followed, many producers working in the independent realm wanted to capitalize on those successes by turning...

Welcome back to Let’s Scare Bryan to Death! Joining us this month is Tarik Davis, a writer and actor whose work stretches across media platforms, from film and television to online content and even stage productions. He’s currently featured on Peacock’s The Amber Ruffin Show, where his horror sensibilities can’t help but peek through from time to time. Horror fans should also check him out in the short film Page One, the Stakes is High essay series that he wrote to explore hate and fascism through the lens of vampire films, and his video "Your 21st Century Woke Horror Host: Addison Hadley."

You’ve no doubt heard of Freddy’s Revenge, but what about Freddy’s second coming?
Horror legend Robert Englund recently sat down with Too Fab (h/t Dread Central) to discuss all things Elm Street and the future of Freddy, a conversation which inevitably touched on the 1985 slasher sequel, A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge.
Helmed by Jack Sholder, the second coming of Englund’s Midnight Mangler fell far short of its predecessor, leaving many horror fans bitterly disappointed, as we all collectively pondered over what could have been. Thank the heavens, then, that Dream Warriors managed to salvage the Elm Street franchise with an imaginative rebound, but Englund believes now is the time for a full remake of Freddy’s Revenge.
Forget the long-rumored reboot of the franchise; Freddy Krueger has called on the movie Gods to revisit the second entry in the Elm Street series.

In 1985, New Line rushed out a sequel to its breakout horror hit of the prior year. But while commercially successful enough, “A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge” was initially disliked by mainstream horror fans, then later won cult status, for the same reason: It struck many as “the gayest horror film of all time,” with content that was either homoerotic or homophobic or both, depending on your view.
Breaking from slasher-genre norms, its protagonist wasn’t a “Final Girl” but a cute, blond, “sensitive” high school boy for whom Robert Englund’s murderous Freddy often seemed to be a metaphor: A flaming little secret Jesse doesn’t want to “come out,” and which only the love of the girl next door (Kim Myers) can save him from. Lead Mark Patton was a closeted gay actor who considered the film’s ambivalent sexual agenda publicly “outed” him. Documentary “Scream,...

Mark Patton was in his mid-twenties when he was cast as Jesse Walsh in “A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge,” which was as financially successful as the first movie in that series. But the blond and beautiful and sensitive Patton, who was a closeted gay actor, took a career hit for being seen as a male scream queen. The new documentary “Scream, Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street” details how Patton disappeared and then re-emerged to take control of his image.
Directors Roman Chimienti and Tyler Jensen have packed the film with as much social context as possible, and they view as many sides of this story as they can in a fast-paced, engaging style. There are interviews with academics and drag queens and fans of the horror genre, and this gives the movie a wide-ranging perspective that helps us better understand the moving personal story at its core.

So this month I’d wanted to showcase something featuring Angela Bassett, who isn’t strictly a horror icon, but has some great roles in the genre, most recently starring in several seasons of American Horror Story, including Coven, which many consider to be the best of the series. But then something happened. I watched her 2000 film Supernova, and I realized about ten minutes in that I was watching a movie so miraculously inept that I just had to take you all on a journey about how a movie that cost anywhere between $60–90 million to make wound up looking like a rejected pilot for the Sci Fi channel. And I can tell you with certainty that it’s not even a little bit Bassett’s fault, but one that I’m more than willing to put squarely on the shoulders of director Thomas Lee.

Exclusive: A documentary about the problematic legacy of A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge told through the perspective of its then-closeted gay star Mark Patton has been acquired by Virgil Films & Entertainment.
Scream, Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street recounts Patton’s difficulties making the 1985 horror sequel, which put him through a range of salacious on-screen ordeals designed to whet the homophobic appetites (conscious or otherwise) of 1980s audiences. Directed by Jack Sholder and written by Scott Chaskin based on Wes Craven’s characters, the film was shot for just a few million dollars but grossed $30 million, extending what would become a half-billion-dollar global franchise.
Critics largely dismissed Freddy’s Revenge, but in the decades since, the film’s unique status as an unintended cultural artifact has made it something of a cult classic. The Advocate has described it as “the gayest horror film ever made.”

In 1985, Mark Patton was a 25-year-old aspiring actor about to enjoy his big break. He had been cast as the leading man in “A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge,” the sequel to 1984’s blockbuster slasher hit written and directed by Wes Craven. For Patton, it was a dream come true. Little did he know, his career would be over just as quickly as it began. As he puts it: “I wake up in the middle of the first movie that I’m the lead actor in, and realize that there’s a gay subtext in it.” Patton’s wild ride provides the backbone of “Scream, Queen! My Nightmare On Elm Street,”
“Scream, Queen!” takes its double-meaning title from the classic horror trope of the scream queen or final girl, a term used to describe the last woman to survive long enough to confront the killer in a slasher film.

An interesting little tidbit about me: years ago, when A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge star Mark Patton had come in to be interviewed for the Never Sleep Again documentary, I was one of the first two reporters to interview him upon his reemergence. I knew at the time it was a big deal, but now after viewing Scream, Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street, I realize just how monumental that moment was, especially for Patton, who had left Hollywood behind in the mid-’80s, and hadn’t looked back until that very moment when he came in to talk about his involvement in the sequel.

In the narrow lanes of Kolkata, where taking a vehicle could be just unthinkable, people not only drive easily but without a dent in the cars! People have developed their own system and an unsaid understanding. I love the spirit of India," Sholder told the publication here.
British entrepreneur and millionaire philanthropist, Haslam spent her childhood in a Kolkata slum. Sholder's film is based on her memoirs "Indian. English", for which he and screenplay writer/ producer Joshua Russell wanted to...

Jack Sholder’s sci-fi satire finds Michael Nouri and a suspiciously Agent Cooper-like Kyle MacLachlan on the trail of a slimy space worm who uses unsuspecting humans to navigate around town including, most amusingly, Claudia Christian as a stripper who suddenly exhibits an unearthly facility with heavy artillery. For a low budget film the effects are first rate. The movie was a modest hit on its release but, like so many worthy films, has gained new life on home video and streaming platforms.

It's that wonderfully eerie time of year and Mondo is getting into the Halloween spirit! They recently revealed a few collectibles for A Nightmare on Elm Street, which is one of the greatest horror franchises of all time. These films are a blast to watch and I always enjoy watching one or two of them during this time of year.
They have released a vinyl box set featuring all of the soundtracks from all of the films in the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. That box set comes with seven pieces of art for the films that were created by artist Mike Saputo. There are also two prints created by the same artist that have gone up for sale for A Nightmare on Elm Street and A Nightmare Elm Street 2.
You can find all of the information below that was released for the vinyl set and the two prints.
