One of the most successful coaches in American pro sports history is parting ways with the team he led to a half-dozen championships. Bill Belichick said during a news conference today that he is leaving the New England Patriots after 24 seasons and six Super Bowl wins in nine appearances.
“It’s with so many fond memories and thoughts that I think about the Patriots, and I’ll always be a Patriot,” he said at the presser. “I look forward to coming back here, but at this time, we’re gonna move on. And I’m excited for the future.”
ESPN reported that a deal with team owner Robert Kraft allowed Belichick to exit with a year remaining on his contract. Coming off a 4-13 season, its second consecutive losing record, the franchise now begins its first hunt for a head coach since the Clinton administration.

Hank Goldberg, longtime ESPN NFL reporter and handicapping expert known as Hammering Hank, died Monday in Las Vegas on his 82nd birthday after battling chronic kidney disease, his family confirmed to ESPN.
With ESPN for two decades, Goldberg was .500 or better in 15 of 17 NFL seasons while predicting games, according to the network. He was a contributor for ESPN’s Daily Wager, appearing weekly during the NFL season and appearing occasionally for the Triple Crown races.
Goldberg began his career in the 1970s as an assistant to handicapper Jimmy “The Greek” Snyder. He went on to become the Miami Dolphins’ radio color analyst. It was Goldberg who broke Dolphin’s coach Don Shula’s retirement following the 1995 season. At the time, Shula told Goldberg, “You finally got rid of me,” to which Goldberg replied, “Coach, that’s not a story I ever wanted to report.”

When talking about the best coaches in football history, it’s impossible to have the conversation without mentioning Don Shula. Coaches like Shula don’t come around often, and his impact on the game will be felt for generations to come. As the winningest coach if NFL history, Shula retired with in 1995 with a career coaching record that included 347 wins and 173 losses. Over the years, he also won two Super Bowl Championships. Shortly after that, Ericson signed a contract with MGM and made his cinematic debut alongside Pier Angeli in “Teresa,” playing a World War II veteran struggling to cope with post-war life after marrying a woman he met in Italy. Perfection is more or less impossible, even in the world of sports. Except for a select few instances, all streaks come to an end and all records fall. But in professional football, one accomplishment has stood the test of time, as the Miami Dolphins are the only team in the history of the NFL to have a completely undefeated season. On this day in 1973, the Dolphins beat the Washington Redskins in Super Bowl VII to win the championship and finish their season with 17 wins and no losses.
The Dolphins' unbeaten run was lead by coach Don Shula, quarterbacks Bob Griese and Earl Morrall (Griese hurt his ankle a third of the way through the season) and running backs Larry Csonka and Jim Kiick. None of those headliners were truly spectacular players, but their workmanlike approach under Shula's offensive system made them a formidable force on the field. They truly dominated on defense,...

He wasn't on the field during the final play of the game (which saw Miami Dolphins running back Ronnie Brown scamper into the endzone for a touchdown), but superstar singer Marc Anthony certainly gave his team a boost last night at Miami's Landshark Stadium. The Dolphins beat the New York Jets 31-27 following a star-studded "orange carpet" that welcomed Anthony (who is part owner of the team) and his wife Jennifer Lopez (or was it Lola?). The event also welcomed Gloria Estefan (another minority owner), former Dolphins coach Don Shula and supermodel Naomi Campbell. Last night's game opened with Anthony's rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner," which no doubt inspired the Dolphins (who are hobbled by an injury to their quarterback Chad Pennington) to overcome one of the strongest defenses in football.
Anthony's ownership in the Dolphins is part of an initiative by the team to bring in celebrity investors.
