- While sidelining on stage, he also operated a full-time neon-sign company during the day.
- Served in the Army Air Force as an aerial gunner trainer during WWII and became one of the few white instructors at a Florida air base who trained black aviators to be aerial gunners. He moved to California after the war to perform in local San Diego theater for decades to come ("The Odd Couple", "Fiddler on the Roof", "Guys and Dolls" and "The Sunshine Boys").
