The head honchos of all major British broadcasters have urged politicians to pass the Media Bill before a change of government.
“As leading CEOs from the UK broadcasting industry, we call on politicians across Parliament not to let the opportunity to modernise the rules that govern our sector pass,” said a joint statement from the heads of the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, Sky, ITN and regional networks.
The long-awaited Media Bill includes updates in areas such as streamer regulation, prominence and will give Channel 4 the opportunity to own the rights to its own shows for the first time in its history. It will bring the major streaming services under regulator Ofcom’s code in areas such as impartiality and age-appropriate content.

David Hemingson’s The Holdovers at Focus Features won original screenplay and Cord Jefferson’s Oscar-winning American Fiction from Amazon MGM Studios took adapted honours at the strike-delayed Writers Guild Awards on Sunday.
This was a second major adapted screenplay award in relatively short order for Jefferson after last month’s Oscar win.
The Holdovers prevailed in an original screenplay category that included Barbie and May December, but not the Oscar winner Anatomy Of A Fall, rendered ineligible here because it was not produced under a Writers Guild of America (WGA) contract.
The best documentary screenplay award went to Errol Morris for The Pigeon Tunnel.

With the 2024 Oscars and the 2023 Emmys firmly in the rearview mirror, the film and TV awards calendar is all but ready to return to normalcy after last years Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes disrupted the first half of award season. The last major event to be impacted by the altered schedule is today’s WGA Awards, which took place in an unusual post-Oscars slot after the strikes forced the guild to delay its voting process. As most of Hollywood looks ahead to the 2024 film and TV slate, today’s concurrent ceremonies in Los Angeles’ Hollywood Palladium and New York City’s Edison Ballroom gave award watchers one last chance to celebrate the best screenwriting of 2023.

For the roughly 100 workers who have recently joined Condé Nast’s “central editorial group,” work has taken a bizarre turn in the past few months.
In November, 94 Condé Union staffers at the glamorous media company behind Vogue, GQ, Vanity Fair and Bon Appétit — across editorial, video and audience development — learned that they had been earmarked to be laid off as part of a companywide cost-cutting push. (Workers at Condé Nast titles The New Yorker and Wired belong to separate unions.) But the cuts wouldn’t happen immediately: Because the NewsGuild of New York-affiliated union didn’t yet have its first contract in place, which would include terms and conditions for job cuts, the labor group maintained that the proposed layoffs had to be negotiated as part of the talks over the agreement and the employees remained in limbo at their brands, waiting to learn their fate.

Semafor founder Ben Smith’s book Traffic: Genius, Rivalry, and Delusion in the Billion-Dollar Race to Go Viral, is set to get the docuseries treatment.
Atlas Media Corp., the non-fiction production company, has optioned the book for a docuseries.
Traffic chronicles the rise and heyday of digital media companies like BuzzFeed and Gawker Media.
But Smith looks at the digital media brands through the lens of the people who founded them, in particular Gawker’s Nick Denton and HuffPost and BuzzFeed’s Jonah Peretti. That focus on ego and competition between founders craving, well, traffic, would naturally lend itself to the personality-driven docuseries treatment.
Smith, of course, sat at the middle of that era. Smith wrote for Politico before becoming the first editor-in-chief for BuzzFeed, building out its news operation. he would go on to write the media column for The New York Times before founding Semafor last year.

Viet Dinh, the influential chief legal officer of Fox Corp. who is believed to have played a significant role in the company’s failed legal strategy against a massive defamation suit filed against it by Dominion Voting Systems, is leaving his role at the media conglomerate at the end of the year.
He is expected to become a special advisor to the company effective December 31, 2023.
“We appreciate Viet’s many contributions and service to Fox as both a board member of 21st Century Fox and in his role over the last five years as a valued member of Fox’s leadership team,” said Lachlan Murdoch, Fox’s executive chairman and CEO, in a statement.
Dinh has long been perceived as having a role at Fox that is greater than his title. In January of 2021, then-New York Times media columnist Ben Smith called Dinh ”a kind of regent who mostly runs the company day-to-day.

If you’re going to cast Meryl Streep in your production, you have one (main) job.
It’s something that Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” showrunner John Hoffman is well aware of; that his audience — be they Day 1 Arconiacs or curious new viewers — are here for one main thing in Season 3: to watch Streep kill (both literally and figuratively). In the premiere episodes, “Only Murders” more than delivers on that promise.
Season 3 opens with two episodes: “The Show Must…” directed by Hoffman and written by Hoffman & Sas E. Hour 1 spotlights Streep’s Loretta Durkin, a seasoned yet green performer in her first major acting role, while the second episode shifts focus to Paul Rudd’s superstar braggart Ben Glenroy, this season’s murder victim.

Jeff Zucker is not shopping for CNN, according to one of the backing partners of his new media venture.
Gerry Cardinale, the private equity player and founder of RedBird Capital, partnered with International Media Investments last year to launch a $1 billion media acquisitions engine run by Zucker. Reports were rampant in June that Zucker was looking to take CNN off the hands of Warner Bros. Discovery, after running the news network for decades before resigning in 2022 over a consensual workplace affair.
“No,” Cardinale said on Thursday when asked if he and Zucker were looking to buy CNN, speaking on stage at the Variety and Sportico Sports and Entertainment Summit in West Hollywood. “I would not have the longevity that I’ve had if I ran my business running around town talking about deals in a way that’s, frankly, disrespectful to David Zaslav. I’m kind of amused and irritated by it.

London and Paris-based Film Constellation head Fabien Westerhoff officially announced the launch of its in-house production arm Constellation Productions exactly a year ago, during the 2022 edition of Cannes.
Twelve months on, the exec is taking stock with a sense of satisfaction.
“Projects are often announced and then you never know whether anything really happens,” he tells Deadline. “In one year, we’ve managed to create a diverse slate of films that are actually getting made.”
The first film to come down the pipeline will be UK director Alice Troughton’s first film The Lesson, starring Daryl McCormack, Richard E. Grant and Julie Delpy, which world premieres at Tribeca in June.
Westerhoff takes a producer credit alongside London-based producer Camille Gatin at Poison Chef Production, Cassandra Sigsgaard at Jeva Films and Judy Tossell at Berlin company Egoli Tossell Film.
With his sales background, the exec financed the film through Focus Features and Bleecker Street.

This is a dark moment for frazzled members of the writing fraternity.
Picketers in Hollywood and New York fear a prolonged standoff gripping film and TV. Also troubling, their colleagues in digital media are patching together their résumés as Vice Media and BuzzFeed prepare for crash landings. Will others follow?
Even a digital zealot like Ben Smith sees the moment as “a humbling experience.” His new book, titled Traffic, vividly revisits the picaresque adventures of the “muckrakers, dweebs and wing nuts” who set out to revolutionize legacy journalism. Some became at once rich and unemployed.
The New York Times liked Smith’s book, even though he quit that paper to start yet another digital adventure called Semafor — its fate still to be determined.
Here’s the irony: While Smith and his social media colleagues are making lots of noise for their next adventures, their colleagues in film and TV are frozen in silence.

Iac chairman Barry Diller thinks the media business cannot afford to make the same mistake twice.
Twenty-five years ago, publishers saw the rise of the internet and made a fateful choice.
“When the internet first began, everything was free. And it was kind of decreed at that time that everything was free, and therefore all publishers said they really had no other choice,” Diller said, speaking to Semafor co-founder Ben Smith at the Semafor Media Summit in New York on Monday evening.
Now, with the rise of generative artificial intelligence, Diller thinks those same companies need to take a different approach.
“The amount of destruction that took place at the beginning when it was declared a free media was enormous,” he said. “And I think that today is potentially analogous to that, which is if publishers do not say, ‘You cannot scrape our content, you cannot take it, you cannot...
