A.A. Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh, classic novels by Ernest Hemingway and Agatha Christie and hundreds of thousands of pre-1923 sound recordings are among the works that entered that public domain on New Year’s Day 2022.
Dorothy Parker’s first poetry collection Enough Rope, William Faulkner’s first novel Soldiers’ Pay, and books by Langston Hughes, Willa Cather, T.E. Lawrence and more also joined Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises and Christie’s The Murder of Roger Ackroyd in the public domain, the Associated Press reported.

Netflix’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom stars Viola Davis as one of the most influential blues singers of all time. The real Ma Rainey was the first stage entertainer to bridge the gap between the white and the Black performance circuits. “If you don’t like my ocean, don’t fish in my sea,” Rainey warned in her 1927 song, “Don’t Fish in My Sea,” but the crowds couldn’t stay away. She was one of the first entertainers to play integrated shows in the Jim Crow South, and the first popular singer with authentic blues in her setlist.
“Madame” Gertrude Rainey was the “Mother of the Blues,” but the world knows her as Ma. She wasn’t the first woman to sing the blues. She’d actually heard it while playing vaudeville, tent shows, and cabarets. Rainey wasn’t even the first woman to record the blues. She...

Netflix’s “Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker,” the story of America’s first self-made female millionaire, takes place between 1908 and 1918. But the music, instead of focusing on the early jazz that might be expected, runs the gamut from ragtime to hip-hop.
“Madam C.J. Walker is a central, seminal historical figure who I had heard about from my mother, who heard about it from her mother,” says music supervisor Morgan Rhodes. “Her story has been part of the fabric of black history down through the years — one that belongs to generations of women.”
Octavia Spencer plays Walker, the daughter of freed slaves who created a line of specialized hair products for African American women. Her entrepreneurial skills and intense drive made her one of the country’s wealthiest and most powerful women. When she died in 1919, she lived near the Astors and the Rockefellers on...

I didn’t think I would have to insult the intelligence of our readers by pointing out a very simple fact, but based on the first comment we received, I guess I should make something clear. This is a list of our favourite soundtracks of 2011. We are currently working on a list of the best original scores, which should be posted sometime within the week. Let us know if you think we left out any soundtracks you would recommend. Enjoy!
10 – Young Adult
One of the themes of Jason Reitman’s upcoming film Young Adult, is the idea of being stuck in the past, and trying to relive your glory days, and so it’s no surprise that the soundtrack to the film is loathed with 1990s alt-rock cuts. Due December 6th via Rhino Records, the fifteen-track disc features the Replacements, the Lemonheads, Dinosaur Jr., Teenage Fanclub, Cracker, 4 Non Blondes, Veruca Salt and many more.

The presence of music in a film is never truly noticed until it is not there. The absence of sound can speak louder than any symphony orchestration and the beginning of Beginners proves this fact by going without sound for its first few minutes. This trend of stripping the sound out of certain scenes runs throughout the film, causing the moments when music is featured to stand out. With a soundtrack featuring artists such as Mamie Smith, Josephine Baker, and Jelly Roll Morton, the music is tinged with hints of a bygone era and a time when every moment in a film did not require a touch of score to flesh it out.

Chicago – What would be the circumstance if after a mother dies, the father suddenly comes out as a gay? Writer/director Mike Mills had that situation occur, and created the new film “Beginners,” featuring Christopher Plummer and Ewan McGregor.
The highly personal but unusual story is sublimely handled by the two leads, and given sure guidance both through Mill’s story and direction. His resume includes graphic designer, filmmaker and artist. In 1996 he co-founded The Directors Bureau with Roman Coppola, which included Sofia Coppola.
He then directed advertising campaigns and music videos, and worked in the short documentary form with “Deformers” (2000) and “Paperboys” (2001). His first feature film was the highly acclaimed indie favorite “Thumbsucker” (2005), which won a Special Jury Prize at Sundance. He is married to another indie film director, Miranda July [”You and Me and Everyone We Know”].

Director Mike Mills' film "Beginners" is about a young man named Oliver (Ewan McGregor) who learns his elderly father has both terminal cancer and a young male lover, and how Oliver tries to love a woman with the life lessons this dying father gives him. Mills wrote the screenplay based loosely on recollections of his own childhood. Likewise the film's refined soundtrack plays like an aural collage of memories from his parent's record collection.
"It's a part of a portrait of my parents," Mills told IFC's Matt Singer about the half classical, half old-timey piano rag soundtrack. "My dad was really into classical music and it really suits that character to me. I got into Bach cello suites and I had them done in French horn, it's a nice background for that part of the story," Mills said. "And then, my mom really listened to "The Sting" score, Scott Joplin...

Liberia boasts Africa's first female elected head of state. But it also has one of the highest rates of violence against women in the world. Here, Emma Thompson and her adopted son Tindy Agaba, a former child soldier, share their diaries of an intimate visit to the people and projects that are empowering the country's daughters

Tindy I left Garden City, Cairo, where I have been working with refugees, at 5am yesterday. Africa is a funny old world. To go to Liberia from Cairo one has to go to Europe first and then get a connecting flight back to Africa!
In the lounge at Brussels Airport, I bump into George Weah, the former AC Milan player and world footballer of the year who was also an ex-presidential aspirant in Liberia. He hasn't changed at all, except that his beard is becoming grey.
