Fresh off his latest BAFTA win for The Sixth Commandment, Timothy Spall’s next project has been revealed.
The Harry Potter star is leading Death Valley with Welsh actress Gwyneth Keyworth (Black Mirror) for the BBC.
Written and created by Paul Doolan (Mammoth) and set in Wales, Death Valley follows the unlikely crime-solving partnership between eccentric national treasure John Chapel (Spall), a retired actor and star of hit fictional detective TV show Caesar, and disarming detective sergeant Janie Mallowan (Keyworth). Thrown together by the murder of John’s neighbor, John and Janie are an odd, yet hilarious duo with opposing instincts, and each week they get to the bottom of gripping murders.
“I’m really looking forward to teaming up with the brilliant Gwyneth Keyworth and the fantastically talented team of creatives and technicians on this new and unique comedy drama,” said Spall.
BBC Studios is producing and distributing, and filming will begin next month.

When Jodie Whittaker regenerates during Doctor Who’s BBC Centenary special this autumn, we’ll be saying goodbye to one of the series’ most beloved and memorable incarnations of the infamous timelord.
The first ever female Doctor, Jodie was also voted the fans’ second favourite Doctor of all time in a 2020 Radio Times poll, but her reign hasn’t been without controversy. From debates on whether there should even be a female Doctor (spoiler alert: there should) to series 13 having three episodes cut due to the Covid-19 pandemic, plus the show’s producers defending lower-than-usual ratings, it’s been a bit of a rollercoaster for the Thirteenth Doctor.
Just what is in store for Whittaker’s final episode?

Jodie Whittaker was terrific in Doctor Who season 11, no doubt about it, but the Thirteenth Doctor’s first year in the Tardis didn’t get under the Time Lord’s skin enough for us to really get a three-dimensional portrait of who this Doctor is. This won’t be the case with season 12, though, as the trailers have alluded to a dark night of the soul for the time traveler coming up. And that’s further teased in this new featurette, a pre-season preview courtesy of BBC America.
The short promo features interviews with the cast and crew, who offer their thoughts on why fans should be excited for the new season. Producer Nikki Wilson seems to sum up the big hook of this run best, saying: “We’re going to see the Thirteenth Doctor really tested.”

As has become the norm in the revived series of Doctor Who, the interior of the Time Lord’s time machine regenerated along with the Doctor herself last season. The same design for the Tardis will continue to be used for Jodie Whittaker’s second run as the Thirteenth Doctor, starting next month, as well, but it’s been given a spruce-up all the same. And ahead of season 12’s premiere in a couple of weeks, these images reveal the revamped inside of the box.
The photos – seen below – come our way via RadioTimes.com, who’ve shared an exclusive report on the Tardis’ new makeover, with interviews with the cast and crew on hand to explain all the changes. The renovation of the time ship has been overseen by incoming production designer Dafydd Shurmer, replacing season 11’s Arwel Wyn Jones, who left the show to work on the BBC’s new Dracula series.

Doctor Who fans are counting down the weeks until we get to see Jodie Whittaker make her proper debut as the Thirteenth Doctor when the series returns for its eleventh season. As exciting as that is, there has been one reason to be mournful, as evidence up to this point had suggested there won’t be a Christmas special this year.
Ever since the sci-fi show returned to screens in 2005, it’s had a Christmas special every year, even during periods when the full seasons were on hiatus. What made us think the tradition had ended, though, was that the press release for season 11 made reference to nine, 50-minute episodes and a 65 minute season opener, but didn’t mention an additional hour-long festive special, as you’d expect.
And yet, a new piece of evidence has now come our way which suggests that there will be a Doctor Who Christmas episode this year after all.

Doctor Who has marked International Women's Day by imagining what the Tardis would look like if it were piloted entirely by women.
The BBC show has released a photo of the current female cast and crew assembled in the Doctor's time and space-travel machine to celebrate their contribution.
The photo features current leading actress Jenna Coleman, who plays companion Clara Oswald, and Michelle Gomez, who plays the current incarnation of the Master, at the controls of the Tardis.
The photo also includes line producer Tracie Simpson, producer Nikki Wilson and director Hettie Macdonald leading the group of women who work on the sci-fi drama.
International Women's Day is celebrated annually on March 8 to recognise the economic, political and social achievements of women worldwide - and in this case, universe-wide!
Doctor Who executive producer Steven Moffat recently confirmed that Coleman had originally planned to quit the show last year.

Yesterday (January 6) marked the start of filming on Doctor Who's eighth series since its comeback in 2005, with fans getting their first on-set glimpse of new lead Peter Capaldi earlier today.
Capaldi's casting is, Who showrunner Steven Moffat tells us, "a big declaration of intent" for the long-running sci-fi series - a "statement of [its] importance" - but how much do we actually know about the new Doctor and his upcoming adventures?
Both Moffat and Capaldi's co-star Jenna Coleman agree that the 55-year-old actor will be "so different" to his 31-year-old predecessor Matt Smith, with the show's head writer promising an "old beast" with a "snarl".

Casualty's series producer Nikki Wilson has revealed that the show will be exploring the issue of riots in a forthcoming storyline. The programme's boss confirmed that the plot will air later this year and explore the consequences of public disorder. Casualty's team came up with the idea before the 2011 England riots took place, but have since made some changes to the planned story. "We're building up to a major storyline about the effects of riots at the end of the current series of Casualty," Wilson told Inside Soap. "That'll be interesting after what happened in real life last summer. "We actually planned the story ages ago, before all of that, so it's been useful to use true events as research for the plot.
