[CUSTOM_PLAYER_BRIGHTCOVE "4840873100001"] During his heyday, it's not an exaggeration to say that women the world over would have killed to be Tom Jones' wife. But Jones started off his career with a big secret: He already had one. Introduced to the world as "22, single and a miner," in 1965, there were three things wrong with that description. Jones was 24, for instance, and he'd never been in a mine in his life. He was also already married to his wife Linda and a father to a 7-year-old son. The pair, who started dating when they were 15, were adamant about their love for each other,...

New Entertainment Weekly editor Matt Bean, a Time Inc. Sport Illustrated editorial star who took over from Jess Cagle (who now runs People), is making changes. Gone is film critic Owen Gleiberman, replaced by younger staffers like Chris Nashawaty. Last week, Bean imported Kyle Ryan of The Onion A.V. Club to run EW.com. Like many publications, dwindling print sales and ads still bring in more revenue than the burgeoning website, which is successful in its own right. And in a staff memo Monday, Bean revealed more hires and promotions: Bean promoted two assistant managing editors to executive editor: Sean Smith (who put in time at Premiere and Newsweek) now runs film, and seven-year veteran Meeta Agrawal runs television. EW's executive editor for integrated content, Kristen Baldwin, has been promoted to deputy editor, taking over for Henry Goldblatt who joined Cagle at People. The question is whether the print edition so resembles the.

About two weeks ago, sitting in the office of EW assistant managing editor Sean Smith, we were discussing EW’s official Oscar predictions and mulling the reaction I was getting from many voters: Gravity was taking the lead in the tightest Best Picture race in years, and those who favored 12 Years a Slave seemed soft in their support.
For months, ever since the historical drama premiered at the Toronto film festival, it was at the top of my predictions list — a crushing, emotionally resonant film that addressed how we perceive and treat those who appear to be different from ourselves.

Women obliterated barriers in Hollywood last year: Katniss Everdeen topped the domestic box office in the female-co-produced The Hunger Games: Catching Fire; Disney’s animated smash Frozen redefined the princess genre with Jennifer Lee as one of two directors at the helm; and two films from power producer Megan Ellison (American Hustle and Her) were just nominated for Best Picture.
But take one step back from the A-list and the picture isn’t so rosy. According to the Center for the Study of Women in Television & Film’s Celluloid Ceiling report, 2013 marked a dismal year for women in behind-the-scenes jobs on the top 250 grossing movies.
