Exclusive: The public television series Pov has acquired Who I Am Not, the award-winning documentary executive produced by Patricia Arquette that explores “what it means to be intersex in a binary world.”
The film directed by Tünde Skovrán will make its broadcast debut this summer as part of Pov’s 37th season on PBS. Pov, produced by American Documentary, is the longest-running show on American television devoted to independent documentary films. [Watch the Who I Am Not trailer below]
Intersex people constitute an estimated 1.7 percent of the population, according to the Intersex Campaign for Equality, which the organization notes “makes being intersex about as common as having red hair (1%-2%).” Yet, intersex people have been largely invisible in most cultures. Who I Am Not combats that invisibility by foregrounding the experience of two intersex people in South Africa, a beauty queen and a male-presenting activist.

For the millions of people who have sexual characteristics that don’t neatly fit into the typical definitions of male or female, life is a constant struggle against misconceptions, biases and cultural norms that, from the moment of birth, attempt to fit us into the box that defines our sex — and, often, how we’ll be perceived for the rest of our lives.
To explore that conflict, veteran Romanian actor Tünde Skovrán — making her directorial debut — traveled to South Africa to follow two intersex people with parallel but divergent lives: Sharon-Rose Khumalo, a beauty queen who suffers an identity crisis after finding out she’s intersex, and Dimakatso Sebidi, a male-presenting intersex activist who is in many ways Khumalo’s polar opposite.
The result, “Who I Am Not,” is an intimate, emotional portrait of intersex people living in a binary world, a reality that according to some estimates is experienced...

In “Narrow Path to Happiness,” Hungarian director Kata Oláh follows a young gay Romani couple from a remote village in Hungary whose dream it is to make a musical based on their lives. Just as the Hungarian government is becoming increasingly authoritarian and hostile toward LGBTQ+ people, they move to the capital. The film played in the International Competition at the Thessaloniki Intl. Documentary Festival this week.
The younger protagonist, Lénárd Váradi, who was 16 years old at the time, reached out to the National Film Institute in Hungary, asking for contacts and looking for a producer who would help them apply for a script development grant. Oláh, who also edited the film, says she couldn’t believe it. “I thought somebody was joking! It cannot be real! So, I said, ‘Sure, let’s meet.’ And then, we met and I fell in love with them and said: ‘You know, it...

This piece is one part loving obituary and one part urgent call-to-action around the undeniable need for our independent film industry to put some sort of safety nets in place for our beloved and aging indie film leadership. Ironically, when I wrote this piece just two months ago, who could have imagined that the topic of safety nets would become so important to All Of Us given the ways in which our industry has been so dramatically halted and upended by the #Coronavirus public health pandemic?By Marc Smolowitz

For context, I am currently developing a new film as a director on these topics, and I hope to gather steam among key indie film organizations in the coming months, so we can all come together (either online or in-person when safe to do so) to create new programs and initiatives that help build safety nets for the most vulnerable in our industry.

Diamond Diplomacy
Logline: Devotion to baseball has been tossed between the U.S. and Japan since the late 1800s, and mirrors profound shifts in diplomacy between the two nations. “Diamond Diplomacy” charts this story revealing pivotal moments of often-controversial duality.
Elevator Pitch:
Baseball is the national pastime of two very different countries. “Diamond Diplomacy” is the never-before-told story about the dramatic ups and downs of U.S. and Japan diplomacy, since 1872, through the lens of a shared love of baseball. Several players and managers (including Babe Ruth and Lefty O’Doul) have been important ambassadors through baseball.

Four new filmmakers are getting some much-needed free production office space via the San Francisco Film Society. FilmHouse Residencies, part of the Film Society's Filmmaker360 program, which is backed by the Kenneth Rainin Foundation, start in February 2014. This innovative program helps narrative features such as "Fruitvale Station" to get made by giving office space for six- or twelve-month residencies to independent filmmakers who are already engaged in film production. These four filmmakers join three other teams already in residence. FilmHouse residents also benefit from a series of lectures and presentations from industry pros as well as resident-led workshops and work-in-progress screenings and access to Sffs networking events; and numerous other community-building programs and events. The panelists who reviewed submissions were Kenneth Rainin Foundation board member Rivkah Beth Medow; filmmaker Marc Smolowitz; Sffs Corporate...
