After Jim Samples, the Cartoon Network executive who oversaw the greenlighting of such successful cartoons as "Samurai Jack," "Ben 10," "Codename: Kids Next Door," and "The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy," left, a new regime at the popular animation-focused cable channel changed tactics. When Stuart Snyder took over in mid-2007, he had a brand new mandate for Cartoon Network — no weird stuff.
Speaking with Buzzfeed, "The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack" creator Thurop Van Orman recalled Snyder saying, "'We don't want anything weird or anything where any mom would come out of the kitchen and say, 'What are you watching?'"
Now, this is not to say that Snyder failed at that command, or that his definition of the word "weird" is different than this writer's, but his tenure was filled with shows you could call "weird" and would make a mom say "What are you watching?"

Why broadcasters want to emulate the success of Angry Birds, Moshi Monsters, Cut the Rope and others
"Wherever children are, we've got to be there with them."
No, not the words of an overbearing parent. The sentence above is what came from the lips of just about every broadcaster or producer who stepped onto the stage at the MIPJunior conference in Cannes this weekend.
The gist: lots of children are using tablets, laptops, smartphones, iPod touches and handheld games devices, so owners of children's brands and/or shows know they need to take them to those platforms. Otherwise children will find other new characters and stories to love who are there.
In a research presentation based on a survey in July 2012 of 933 British 7-16 year-olds, 1,120 parents and 202 teachers, Family Kids and Youth managing director Dr Barbie Clarke claimed that 58% of British children aged 7-16 are using a smartphone, tablet or iPod touch,...

Hey, anyone remember the Captain Planet cartoon from the 90's? Well Cartoon Network hasn't and they've just teamed up with Angry Filmworks and producer Don Murphy (Transformers 2 and 3) to bring it to the big screen. The show Captain Planet and the Planeteers ran in the 90's for a total of six seasons and focused on the adventures of five kids with rings that held the power to summon Captain Planet and would use him to fight eco-villians. Stuart Snyder who runs the kids part of Turner Broadcasting stated that he believes that the themes of Captain Planet are more relevant than ever.

Get ready, '90s nostalgia lovers. "Captain Planet and the Planeteers," which aired as a cartoon from 1990-1996, is set for the live-action movie treatment, according to a press release. Cartoon Network and "Transformers" producer Don Murphy and partner Susan Montford's Angry Filmworks are teaming up together for the project.

Hey guys, remember the '90s? Actually, it doesn't matter if you do, because thanks to the persistency of the internet and non-stop reruns on hundreds of cable channels, you couldn't possibly escape the '90s even if you wanted to.
And that's just what Cartoon Network is counting on, because according to The Hollywood Reporter, they've just struck a deal to produce a new live-action "Captain Planet" movie. The power is yours!
Based on the popular cartoon that ran in various forms for six years back in the '90s, "Captain Planet" tells the story of five kids from around the world who are chosen by Gaia (the spirit of the Earth itself) to protect the planet from ecological disasters. They do this by using their "planet vision" to discover where the biggest threats are, whereupon they summon Captain Planet, a green skinned superhero with a flattop who uses...

"Captain Planet, he's our hero..." All children of the 90's, rejoice. Earth, fire, wind, water, and... heart, have united to bring back Captain Planet. Or rather, "Transformers" producer Don Murphy and business partner Susan Montford have united to bring back the eco-hero, this time to the big screen.
"Captain Planet and the Planeteers" was a children's cartoon created by Ted Turner in the 1990's. It encouraged environmental awareness, following five global youths who solved environmental crises. When they needed extra help, they summoned Captain Planet, a rather strapping blue superhero, who turned the mullet into a heroic hairstyle.
Guest voices included Whoopi Goldberg, Meg Ryan, Martin Sheen, Edward Asner, and Sting.
Now, a recent press release available on Collider.com reports that Cartoon Network has signed a development agreement with Murphy, Montford and their company Angry Filmworks. The plan is to develop a live-action motion picture based on "Captain Planet and the Planeteers.

Cartoon Network and Transformers producers Don Murphy and Susan Montford are joining forces to form a live-action, feature film adaptation of “Captain Planet and the Planeteers,” an animated environmentalist adventure that originally ran from 1990 to 1992.
The premise of the series was that Gaia, the spirit of Earth, awakened due to abuse from humans and sent five magic rings around the globe that, when combined, would summon Captain Planet, who would fight to bring pollution “down to zero.” To battle the forces of “eco-villains,” the Planeteers were each entrusted with control of an element: fire, water, earth, wind, and heart. I think we can all agree the “heart” Planeteer got screwed.
No word on a timeline for the production, though that won’t keep Al Gore from sending over a fresh set of headshots and a “sizzle reel” that can both put you to sleep and give you nightmares. Without a...

I hated Captain Planet, I didn't even watch this show growing up because of how terrible it was, so the fact that it's being adapted into a live-action feature film is a stupid idea. Honestly, who wants to see a Captain Planet movie? There is nothing cool about this character. I'm sorry, I'm all for saving our planet and all, but I don't want to see a stupid preachy environmental movie about a superhero trying to save it. Captain Planet was a terrible spokesman.

Cartoon Network (via Shh!) confirms that they are working on a live-action adaptation of the environmentally safe superhero, Captain Planet and the Planeteers. The series was created by Ted Turner, and the origin goes like this (via Wiki): “Gaia assembles a modern-day team of “Planeteers” assembled from several nations. When the modern-day Planeteers combine their powers to summon the elemental warrior, this incarnation takes on the appearance of a superhero, who takes on the superhero-like name of “Captain Planet.” Captain Planet displays a wry sense of humor and often uses puns while taunting the show’s cast of villains.
The Planeteers summon him when the need arises and when the crisis is too much for them to handle. When summoned, Captain Planet declares “By your powers combined, I am Captain Planet!”. After the crisis is dealt with, Captain Planet disappears, and restores the powers to the Planeteer’s rings.

One of the most interesting and entertaining animated shows for children in years, Cartoon Network’s Ben 10, is headed for a live-action theatrical release thanks to mega producer Joel Silver. For those who don’t have children – or just aren’t willing to admit that they still watch cartoons – Ben 10 follows the exploits of Ben Tennyson, who is on a summer-long vacation with his cousin Gwen and their grandfather Max, traveling cross country in Max’s Rv, dubbed “The Rust Bucket”. However, everything is changed when Ben – while walking through the woods – sees what appears to be a meteorite hit the ground. Yet, upon further inspection, Ben soon realises that it’s actually a case carrying a strange looking wrist watch called an Omnitrix, an object which contains the DNA of ten different kinds of aliens (the 10 in Ben 10 – referring to the aliens and his last name...

Yesterday we reported some news on DreamWorks' sequel to How To Train Your Dragon, and how the original cast of the first film is coming back to reprise their roles. Today, Cartoon Network has announced that How To Train Your Dragon is also being developed into a weekly TV series as well.
I loved the original film, and it would be great if the sequel and this series ended up being really solid productions. Regardless of what us adults think, this is all being done for the kids, so if they enjoy that's all that matters. I just think it would be a bonus if we could enjoy it as well.
What do you all think of How To Train Your dragon being turned into a TV series? Will you watch it?

For a network with the word "cartoon" in its name, there were an awful lot of real-life performers on hand during Cartoon Network's upfront presentation Wednesday morning.
Of the 19 new series/movies announced, more than half were not animated projects. In fact, as if to drive the message home that the network was not just about cartoons anymore, the confab at the Time Warner Center in New York closed with about 20 young actors gathering onstage, including a foursome that will headline a new live-action " Scooby-Doo" movie.
Cartoon Network's brass touted the move into live action content as part of an ongoing "evolution"-- a much repeated word during Wednesday's presentation.
"Our voice is changing," said Stuart Snyder, president and COO of Turner Broadcasting's animation, young adults and kids media division, comparing the network to a young boy who wakes up one day with a deeper voice. "This is an evolution of our brand.

NEW YORK -- Flanked by four Clone Troopers, George Lucas headlined Cartoon Network's upfront presentation Thursday, pitching advertisers his new animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
Cartoon executives also announced that a second live action Ben 10 TV movie is in the works, a new animated Batman: The Brave and the Bold series will air in the fall and that Chowder -- the network's top-rated show among kids 6-11 -- would be picked up for a second season.
In addition, they unveiled a new initiative called Cartoonstitute that is designed to dramatically increase Cartoon's development slate by creating up to 150 pieces of programming over the next 20 months.
"It's 'Star Wars' starring an 11-year-old girl," Lucas said after advertisers viewed a short clip of the Clone Wars series, premiering in the fall. He said partnering with Cartoon and sister network TNT allowed the show, which he described as appealing to audiences 8-80 to "cover all the bases very well and have an extra wide reach." The show will also air on TNT after it premieres on Cartoon.
Following a brief Q&A between Lucas and Turner Animation president and COO Stuart Snyder, the Cartoon Network exec told the advertisers Clone Wars represented "once in a lifetime" opportunities for their brands.

Turner Entertainment Group president Mark Lazarus is leaving the company as part of a reorganization that will see top executives Steve Koonin, David Levy and Stuart Snyder take on additional responsibilities.
Turner said the shake-up is intended to "more closely align operating functions within business units," but it also removes one layer of upper management: Koonin, Levy and Snyder, who had reported to Lazarus, will now report to Turner Broadcasting chairman and CEO Phil Kent.
"For some time now, Mark and I have been talking about the future structure of the company," Kent wrote in an e-mail sent to Turner employees Tuesday. "In the new structure that I have decided upon, there was not a role of scale that Mark was interested in."
He added that Lazarus will leave Turner "in the coming weeks."
Lazarus joined the company in 1990 as an account executive with Turner Broadcasting Sales and worked his way up the ranks to hold such positions as president of Turner Sports and president of Turner Entertainment Sales and Marketing.

TORONTO -- The purchase price on Tuesday for embattled Cinar Corp. rose by around $1.2 million after an arbitrator ruled in favor of the Canadian animation producer in a dispute over options held by company co-founders and former co-CEOs Micheline Charest and Ronald Weinberg. Acting on the arbitrator's decision, Montreal-based Cinar said shareholders are to receive $3.60 per-share in cash rather than $3.57. About $1.2 million of the $143.9 million purchase price first proposed on Oct. 30 by an investor group led by Michael Hirsh and Toper Taylor was held in escrow until the dispute between Cinar's current management and Charest and Weinberg over the exercise of 840,000 options was resolved. "I am pleased that the arbitration board decision supports the company's position that the options held by Ms. Charest and Mr. Weinberg expired on March 6, 2000," Stuart Snyder, president and CEO of Cinar, said in a statement. Settling the options dispute means Cinar moves another step to clearing the deck before new ownership moves into the executive suite. A special shareholders meeting is scheduled for Jan. 15 in Montreal to secure approval for the acquisition by Hirsh and Taylor, both former executives of rival animation producer Nelvana Ltd.

The half-hour series has been spun off from an existing kids animation series, Arthur, which Cinar and WGBH co-produce. Postcards From Buster represents the first new project Cinar has attempted since Stuart Snyder was installed as president and CEO of the restructured TV producer.
