Yoko Ono and John Lennon’s marriage may be the stuff of rock ‘n roll history, but new details of an affair are shedding light on the eccentric partnership.
Former employee May Pang exposes her extramarital relationship with late Beatle Lennon, alleging the two dated for 18 months during his marriage to Ono. Documentary “The Lost Weekend: A Love Story” features interviews with Pang, Ono’s son Julian Lennon, and archived footage of Lennon himself calling the idea of his affair with Pang “ridiculous.”
Pang was 19 years old when she began working at Apple Records and soon started an affair with Lennon while employed as his and Ono’s personal assistant. Ono’s rocky marriage to Lennon inspired her to ask Pang to be intimate with her husband. Ono and Lennon were married in 1969, one year before the Beatles disbanded in 1970. Lennon later was shot and killed in 1980.

Although only one of these 1950s B&w thrillers falls within a mile of a hard definition of film noir, all give us glamorous actresses in interesting roles. Claudette Colbert takes her turn at playing a nun, Merle Oberon tries a femme fatale role on for size and Hedy Lamarr does very well for herself as a man-hungry movie star. Kino gives all three excellent transfers, and one comes with an appropriately gossipy audio commentary.

Otto Preminger and Gene Tierney’s return to the noir fold plays better now than it once did — the performances are impressive and the villain’s diabolical murder scheme is as good as anything that Fantomas or Moriarty ever came up with. Tierney’s pampered wife is the perfect patsy for a con-man with hypnosis skills — a fraud who decides to cover up an earlier crime by mesmerizing a new victim to frame herself for murder. The focus is on third-billed José Ferrer… who puts an oily menace into his character that few actors could provide.

John Lennon’s last directing project is finally coming to theaters, almost 38 years after the Beatles co-founder’s death. In December 1972, American television audiences got their first look at “Imagine,” the autobiographical film he and wife Yoko Ono made in England and New York City. Eagle Rock Entertainment will bring a restored and remastered version to cinemas next month, featuring 15 minutes of previously-unaired material, including performance footage from the couple’s Plastic Ono Band.
“Imagine” shares its name with both Lennon’s 1971 solo album and its title track, ranked third on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 greatest songs. Decades later, in 2016, the National Music Publishers Association awarded Ono a songwriting credit on the pacifist anthem. Now 85 years old, Ono lent her voice to Wes Anderson’s 2019 Best Animated Feature Oscar hopeful, “Isle of Dogs,” and will release her next album, “Warzone,” in October. “Warzone” includes a track that covers “Imagine.

Close-Up is a column that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Nicholas Ray's In a Lonely Place (1950) is playing June 2 - July 2, 2017 on Mubi in the United Kingdom as part of the series The American Noir.Although mostly remembered now by the public for his 1955 classic Rebel Without a Cause, Nicholas Ray left behind him a legacy of over twenty feature films. A veritable cinematic explorer, Ray traversed genres ranging from noir, western (most notably his 1954 gender-bending cult Trucolor extravaganza Johnny Guitar), melodrama, epic and experimental film. He dared as few would to shoot in remote and forbidding locations such as the Arctic and Everglades National Park. What are Ray’s films about? As in his signature piece Rebel, despite Ray’s wide-ranging endeavors in genre and subject matter we are often met with anti-hero protagonists who struggle and rail against authority while lamenting their meaningless and circumscribed existences.
