"Do you promise to stay with me forever?" Netflix has revealed an official trailer for a Dutch film titled My Best Friend Anne Frank, apparently the first ever Dutch movie made about Anne Frank, despite the fact that she lived there for most of her life. Based on the real-life friendship between Anne Frank and Hannah Goslar, from Nazi-occupied Amsterdam to their harrowing reunion in a concentration camp. This is labeled as "live-action" to differentiate it from the animated film that debuted last year called Where Is Anne Frank, also about Anne Frank and her imaginary best friend. This Dutch film follows Anne all the way to the camps where she eventually dies in early 1945. Starring Aiko Beemsterboer as Anne, Josephine Arendsen as Hannah, with Roeland Fernhout, Lottie Hellingman, Björn Freiberg, Hans Peterson, and Stefan de Walle. This adaptation looks more educational than anything, but it might still be a worthwhile watch.

LatinoBuzz: Winners of 33rd Edition CineMart Include Academy Award-Nominee Ciro Guerra's New Project
The CineMart 2016 awards have been announced marking the close of the 33rd edition of the co-production market. German production "Berlin Alexanderplatz" was awarded the Eurimages Co-Production Development Award of €20,000, which is given to a project presented by a European producer. Colombian production "Birds of Passage" was awarded the €6,000 Arte International Prize and the Wouter Barendrecht Award went to Christopher Radcliff’s new project "The Strange Ones." The prize of €5,000 is given by the Wouter Barendrecht Film Foundation. The jury for the Arte and Eurimages awards is comprised of the Netherlands Film Fund’s Dorien van de Pas, producer Annamaria Lodato and Fabien Westerhoff, head of international licensing, production and finance company Ffwd (formerly with Hanway and WestEnd). The Wouter Barendrecht Award is decided on by representatives of the Wouter Barendrecht Film Foundation, Nelleke and Ellis Driessen.
CineMart selected 25 international projects to participate in the four day event which has been one of the most successful in recent years. Multiple conferences and panels covering topics ranging from “Making the most of a film festival” to “The Micro-Budget Talent Programmes” were held in front of packed audiences who were invited to be involved in the debates and receive advice. Mike S. Ryan (Greyshack Films), Michael Weber (The Match Factory), Winnie Lau (Jettone Films Ltd) and Bero Beyer (Director Iffr) discussing ‘The Creative Thunder of Cinema’ proved one of the highlights of Iffr 2016.
On making the announcement, Head of Industry and CineMart, Marit van den Elshout commented: “This year’s line-up was exceptional and inspiring. I speak on behalf of the entire team when I say that we could not be more proud – we have seen so many great projects, and so many talented teams behind them, the winners really exemplify this. I am also pleased to say that we hosted multiple extremely well attended panels and conversations, discussing the current state and possible future of the cinema that we love and cherish in Rotterdam.”
This year’s Eurimages Co-Production Development Award winner, "Berlin Alexanderplatz" by Burhan Qurbani (Germany) is a Sommerhaus Filmproduktion production. On the jury’s decision, Dorien van de Pas commented: “The project gives us a new and relevant view on a classic piece. The talented director has already made several films about urgent and relevant topics, that currently affect all our countries. Here he will combine elements of genre film with more political and emotional layers, which makes it accessible for a younger audience. The project leads to an ideal co-production scenario and the money of this award will be well employed for casting and further development.”
The Arte International Prize winner is "Birds of Passage" (Colombia) by Ciro Guerra, who is currently nominated for the Best Foreign Language Academy Award for "Embrace of the Serpent," produced by Ciudad Lunar Producciones and Blond Indian Films. On presenting the award, Annemaria Lodato commented: “We decided to give the Arte International Prize to a young South American filmmaker who has already produced a strong and convincing body of work. The project takes us into the heart of an indigenous community, a time and place never explored on screen.”
The Wouter Barendrecht Award winner is "The Strange Ones" (USA), directed by Christopher Radcliff and Lauren Wolkstein, produced by Sébastien Aubert. "Mysterious events surround the travels of two brothers as they make their way across a remote American landscape. On the surface all seems normal, but what appears to be a simple vacation soon gives way to something more complex, dark, and potentially deadly." On presenting the award Managing Director of Fortissimo Films, Nelleke Driessen commented: “The short film on which this film project is based, convinced the jury of the potential for the feature. We trust that the makers will succeed to translate this apparent simple story into an intriguing, multi layered psychological thriller.”
Hbf+Europe Distribution Support for International Co-productions
Next to these awards, Iffr’s Hubert Bals Fund is proud to announce the first selection of its brand-new distribution scheme: Hbf+Europe Distribution Support for International Co-productions. Some 25 projects from 21 countries are featured in CineMart 2016, Iffr’s much vaunted co-production market.
Now in its 33rd edition, this is the oldest event in its kind - and it has received a boost this year from the appointment of producer and regular CineMart attendee Bero Beyer as Iffr festival director.
Organisers report a major spike in the number of projects submitted to CineMart.
“It is crucial to be very selective in the kind of projects that we present. There’s a lot of overproduction and a lot of markets and places where projects are brought into the world,” states Marit van den Elshout, Head of Industry/CineMart Manager.
Once projects are chosen, there is still homework to be done. It is never just a case of filmmakers turning up and pitching blindly. The CineMart organisers help them prepare for their meetings and are designing a mentoring programme for those who are interested post-CineMart.

Chicago – A glance at the premise of Ben Sombogaart’s “Bride Flight” would lead one to believe that the entire film chronicled the 1953 long distance air race from London to Christchurch, New Zealand. Yet that backdrop merely serves as the launching pad for a plethora of melodramatic fireworks. Despite occasional moments of hokum, the film benefits greatly from its three splendid leads.
Instead of focusing on the race itself, Marieke van der Pol’s script centers on a trio of female immigrants from Holland who board the plane known as The Flying Dutchman (dubbed “Bride Flight”) to meet their fiancés as they make a new home in New Zealand. Yet a chance encounter with a handsome young ladykiller, Frank (Waldemar Torenstra), proves to have a lasting impact on their lives. What follows is a relatively standard romantic tearjerker much like “Bridges of Madison County” with a dash of post-wwii intrigue.

Title: Bride Flight Director: Ben Sombogaart Starring: Karina Smulders, Elise Schaap, Anna Drijver, Waldemar Torenstra, Rutger Hauer Based on the novel by Marieke van der Pol, Dutch import ‘Bride Flight’ is emblematic of the particular sort of heritage cinema that is from the outside and at first glance stuffy and a bit boring but, if one gives it time and an open heart and mind, eventually blossoms due to the strength of its characterizations. Directed by Ben Sombogaart (‘Twin Sisters’) and based on true events, the film opens in the present day at a funeral and then flashes back to 1953, as a plane full of (mostly betrothed) women escape...

Ben Sombogaart’s Dutch melodrama Bride Flight is flooded with nostalgia, but not for the era (the 1950s and ’60s) or place (mostly New Zealand) where it’s set. It’s informed by a longing for tone, not time, resulting in a vague, hazy aesthetic that floods every available space with as much light as it can hold. The story centers around three women—mousy farm girl Karina Smulders, fashion designer Anna Drijver, and aspirant housewife Elise Schaap—who hop aboard a plane bound for the antipodes, part of an attempt to break air-travel records; for unspecified reasons, the plane ...

AMSTERDAM -- Rutger Hauer and Carice van Houten will lead the cast of Oscar-nominated director Paula van der Oest's (Zus and Zo) latest film, the biopic Smoke and Ochre.
German actor Sebastian Koch, the real life partner of Van Houten, whom she met on the set of Blackbook, also will join the cast.
The film, to be shot in the second half of 2008, deals with the life of South African poet Ingrid Jonker, who committed suicide near Capetown in 1965. Jonker was a fierce critic of censorship during apartheid.
For Hauer, it will be his third recent acting job in the Netherlands. He recently finished shooting a cameo role for Bride Flight by Ben Sombogaart (Twin Sisters), and will lend his voice to the experimental feature Oogverblindend by Cyrus Frisch.

AMSTERDAM -- Two leading Dutch independent film and television production companies Motel Films and IDTV Film are joining forces.
The companies will work together under the name IDTV Film. Both parties plan to make film and television drama for the Dutch and foreign market under the IDTV banner.
The name Motel Films will remain a label for art movies, while drama output will be absorbed by IDTV Film.
Negotiations for the merger began this year, and Jeroen Beker and Frans van Gestel of Motel Films said it was necessary in order to grow.
Motel Films recently co-produced Paul Verhoeven's "Black Book" and the current Dutch hit "Love Is All".
IDTV, the company behind the Oscar-nominated "Twin Sisters" and Ben Sombogaart's "Bride Flight", is looking for "further artistic continuity for the film company" and aims to expand its drama output as a result of the collaboration.
The new management consists of Beker and van Gestel, under which Anton Smit maintains his position as independent creative producer.
IDTV's Hanneke Niens has opted not to join the new collaboration and will pursue a career as an independent producer.

AMSTERDAM -- Mijke de Jong's family film Bluebird, has been picked as the official Dutch contender for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2006 Academy Awards, selection committee Holland Film announced Wednesday. The movie, awarded a Glass Bear in the children's section of this year's Berlin International Film Festival, tells the story of a 13-year-old girl who is pestered by her schoolmates. The events have a dramatic effect on her private life. Bluebird has been presented at several international festivals, including Toronto. The Dutch are traditionally one of the first territories to announce their candidate for the foreign language Oscar. Previous Dutch winners in the section are Marleen Gorris' Antonia's Line in 1996 and Mike van Diem's Karakter in 1998. Two years ago, Twin Sisters, directed by Ben Sombogaart, received a nomination.

LONDON -- Ben Sombogaart's "De Tweeling" (Twin Sisters) has been selected by the Dutch Film Academy as the official entry for the foreign-language Oscar nomination race, London-based High Point Films said Friday. High Point is selling worldwide rights to the title and sealed a deal with Miramax Films for the title during the Festival de Cannes this past May. "It is an excellent film that contains all the right ingredients to be a powerful Oscar contender," High Point partner Ronald De Neef said.
CANNES -- Miramax Films executive vp acquisitions and co-productions Agnes Mentre said Monday that the mini-major had sealed a deal to acquire North American rights to Dutch Helmer Ben Sombogaart's epic feature "Twin Sisters" (De Tweeling). The sisters' lives take very different turns until they meet again 40 years after World War II. "Twins" was a bestseller in Holland and Germany with more than 3.5 million readers. De Loo's book was originally published in the Netherlands in 1993 and is the author's first to have been translated into English. "Twin Sisters" was written for the big screen by Marieke van der Pol and stars Thekla Reuten, Nadja Uhl, Ellen Vogel, Gudrun Okras, Jeroen Spitzenberger, and Roman Knizka.
