Before AI started growing as a concern in the entertainment industry in many aspects, there was and still is a struggle with the way streamers promote works to certain viewers, with their algorithms spotlighting some content while leaving others in the dark. The technology is in almost every facet of the internet to customize exposure and availability to consumers. Studios seemingly make creative decisions based on what is trending or what spikes in activity. However, rarely do you hear of movie pitches getting turned down due to the unfavorable results of an algorithm.
That’s exactly what director Brian Helgeland claims happened with Netflix after he was pitching to them an idea to do a sequel to his 2001 period film A Knight’s Tale. The first movie starred the late Heath Ledger, and while his absence alone would play a big factor in working against a sequel, Helgeland says Netflix lost...

Brian Helgeland's 2001 film "A Knight's Tale" is based on the first of the Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer, but it has as much to do with 14th-century medieval literature as "Wayne's World." The film features characters singing Queen songs and one of the characters invents the Nike "swoop" as a brand for her armor. The story involves William Thatcher (Heath Ledger) a handsome young cove who aims to win jousting tournaments and be welcomed as one of the king's knights. It's a raucous, lightweight, silly movie that is deeply beloved by a very specific age group, that is: those who were between 15 and 17 in May of 2001.
It also depicted Ledger at the height of his heartthrob powers, as well as Paul Bettany (as Chaucer), Rufus Sewell as the villain, Shannyn Sossamon as Ledger's would-be paramour, and a trio of brilliant comedian sidekicks in Mark Addy, Laura Fraser, and Alan Tudyk.

'A Knight's Tale' sequel was scrapped by the Netflix algorithm, according to director Brian Helgeland. The 63-year-old filmmaker has been keen to shoot a follow-up to his 2001 medieval comedy classic - which starred Heath Ledger, Paul Bettany and Alan Tudyk - but despite the original movie's enduring popularity, the streaming platform has decided against it.He told Inverse magazine: "I pitched it to Sony because they own the rights, and it seemed like they were interested in making it with Netflix, releasing it as a Netflix movie.“My understanding is that Netflix tested this sequel idea through their algorithms, which indicated that it would not be successful."‘A Knight’s Tale’ seems to get more popular with every passing year; it’s the strangest thing.”Helgeland and the team already had big plans for a sequel almost 20 years ago when they finished work on the original movie. He recalled:...

“A Knight’s Tale” director Brian Helgeland revealed in a career retrospective interview with Inverse that his efforts to make a sequel to his 2001 medieval action-comedy classic were apparently thwarted by the Netflix algorithm.
“When we finished ‘A Knight’s Tale,’ we were already thinking about making the sequel as a pirate film,” Helgeland said. “The plot revolved around Count Adhemar (Rufus Sewell) kidnapping Jocelyn (Shannyn Sossamon) and taking her to Constantinople. They end up as galley slaves after their boat is captured by pirates. There’s a prisoner on the boat who has a treasure map tattooed on his back, but he keeps getting flogged for indiscipline. The guys volunteer to take turns getting flogged in this prisoner’s place, so the map isn’t erased. Sony didn’t want to do it.”

A potential sequel to “A Knight’s Tale,” the 2001 period comedy that starred the late Heath Ledger as an aspiring knight, was killed by the Netflix algorithm, according to director Brian Helgeland.
“I pitched it to Sony because they own the rights, and it seemed like they were interested in making it with Netflix and releasing it as a Netflix movie,” the original film’s writer-director told Inverse in an interview published Monday. “My understanding is that Netflix tested this sequel idea through their algorithms, which indicated that it would not be successful.”

"This world is not kind to weak people." XYZ Films has revealed the trailer for a Canadian cheerleading film called Backspot, which plays more a serious drama or intense thriller than a sports comedy or satire. This is similar to that rowing film The Novice a few years ago. This premiered at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival last year and hits US theaters in May. Devery Jacobs (from "Reservation Dogs") stars as Riley, who is given the chance to cheer with the all-star squad, Thunderhawks. With a competition looming, Riley must navigate her crippling anxiety, her relationship with her girlfriend, and also her desperate need for approval from her new coach. One positive review states: “You may think you know your sports movie tropes, but you’ve never seen them used quite this way — that is, within a queer cheerleading drama firmly focused on complex female characters — and Waterson’s Backspot delights in skewing such expectations.

If you’re looking for recent movies about the uniquely harrowing experience of female perfectionism, there’s the Taylor Swift documentary Miss Americana, Lauren Hadaway’s gut-punching feature debut The Novice, and now Backspot, the debut feature from Canadian DJ and director D. W. Waterson. Backspot has all the trappings of an impactful story, putting capable actors like Devery Jacobs and Evan Rachel Wood in the pressure cooker of competitive cheerleading. Unfortunately, this movie is far more concerned with bassy beats and showy camerawork than it is with making a point.
Our protagonist is Riley (Jacobs), a neurotic backspot who gets recruited into an elite squad, the Thunderhawks, just before a big competition. Together with her girlfriend Amanda (Kudakwashe Rutendo) and friend Rachel (Noa Diberto), Riley tries to withstand the brutal new standards set forth by their exacting coach, Eileen (Evan Rachel Wood). The premise of Nancy Meyers' 2006 romance "The Holiday" is rather high concept. Iris (Kate Winslet), a reporter in England, has just broken up with her cheating boyfriend. Amanda (Cameron Diaz), a Los Angeles native and showbiz impresario, has just done the same. By chance, the two heartbroken women discover a want-ad in the newspaper wherein they would swap homes for the holidays and live in each other's respective towns. Amanda, while in England, finds some unexpected romantic company with Iris' visiting brother Graham (Jude Law). The two decide to have a fling, but end up seeing each other more and more. Iris, meanwhile, settling in L.A., finds herself drifting closer and closer toward a friend of her ex, a charming and funny dude named Miles (Jack Black). The film also features Rufus Sewell, Shannyn Sossamon, Kathryn Hahn, and John Krasinski. Lindsay Lohan makes a cameo.

It felt good didn’t it? Watching a fantasy film where folks could crack a smile and actually enjoy their adventure. There was certainly danger and monsters in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves—not to mention the roleplaying tabletop game’s namesakes!—but that didn’t mean you couldn’t enjoy the ride.
In the last 20 years, fantasy has largely come to take itself exceedingly seriously where the fate of kingdoms or the entire world often hangs in the balance, and the central heroes who may start merry end the story broken, traumatized, and in a few instances ready to murder their homicidal lover… who is also their aunt.
This past weekend’s winsome D&d movie did away with all that, instead favoring some good old-fashioned romping to go along with a pure cut of high fantasy. If you enjoyed the experience, here are some other fantasy movies we recommend to continue the fun.

Horror movies like Deep Fear take place underground, and they are often the most effective as far as compelling scares go. They evoke a fear that everyone can understand. Trap someone in a confined, dark space below ground, then have them be pursued by someone (or something) — it’s a simple but winning formula.
Screambox‘s latest release Deep Fear, as well as the nine other movies below, reinforce feelings of claustrophobia and remind you of what possible evils could be hiding below the surface. As Above, So Below, The Descent, C.H.U.D., Creep and The Midnight Meat Train are all familiar examples of this subgenre, but this list focuses on underseen movies set underground.

Grimcutty begins with a young boy, his hands and wrists covered in bandaids, sneaking out of his room as his mover reads articles about internet challenges. As he makes his way downstairs and gets a knife a half-glimpsed figure, Grimcutty, slips into the house. The boy then stabs his mother, apparently at the creature’s command.

There’s a compelling kernel of something interesting at the heart of Grimcutty, the new Hulu film by writer/director John Ross. The film is a treatise on hysterical helicopter parents, the dangers of social media challenges and the growing concern about how much screen time is healthy. These are valid (albeit not entirely new) concerns, and horror is a great lens through which to explore them.
The issue isn’t Grimcutty’s premise, but rather its execution. This is a messy film, complete with substantial logic gaps, more than one scenery-chewing performance, and a run time that isn’t earned by its relatively thin, repetitive script.
The film opens solidly: mother Melinda Jaynes (Alona Tal) locks her young son Brandon (Kayden Alexander Koshelev) in his bedroom at night, seemingly in an effort to protect him from the lurking figure of Grimcutty (Joel Ezra Hebner) outside. When Brandon sneaks out...

Few things are as universally creepy as an old-fashioned urban legend. Kept alive through scary retellings at sleepovers and campfire tales, the information age ushered in by the internet had all but killed the wonder and fascination with these stories. That is until a new form of urban legend was born — the creepypasta. Slenderman is arguably the most well-known creepypasta, with the online meme unfortunately inspiring a very real murder attempt. This real-life violence has now allowed creepypastas to reignite the torch of power that the Internet extinguished from classic urban legends, and has given horror creatives a whole new playground to explore.

Aside from being a rollicking, romantic romp, The Mummy (1999) has carved out an iconic place among movie lovers for what Tor.com’s Leah Schnelbach describes as its chaotic bisexual energy. Here is a movie with an ensemble cast whose combined hotness, sheer charisma, and bucking of gender and societal norms make it so that anyone can see themselves in a variety of characters—and perhaps make some breakthroughs in realizing who they’re attracted to.

Summer is almost over. You can feel it as the days are getting longer. You can smell it as the air gets a little cooler and that first bit of foliage starts to fall. While the heat is still raging in large swaths of the U.S. (which this streaming list has been composed for), the truth is things are starting to quiet down.
In that vein, it’s a perfect time to curl up with someone and “Netflix and chill” as the kids might say. It’s also just a good time to revisit some old favorites, which Netflix is bringing back to the streaming service in droves. Here are the best of those gems.

After months of anticipation and fantasy casting, the hit Showtime original "Yellowjackets" has finally found the adult version of our Antler Queen. New Zealand actor Simone Kessell has been cast to play Adult Lottie Matthews, one of the surviving members of the 1996 Wiskayok High School Varsity Girls Soccer team following a plane crash that stranded them in the Canadian wilderness for 19 months. "Yellowjackets" explores both the aftermath of the plane crash in the 1990s when the girls were teenagers, and the present day as they all struggle to exist as adults harboring huge secrets. When we last saw Lottie (Courtney Eaton) in 1996, she had killed a full-grown grizzly bear with a single knife to the head, solidifying her place as a pseudo soothsayer and garnering a small group of dedicated followers like Van (Liv Hewson) and Misty (Samantha Hanratty).

An attempt to resuscitate a Mexico-set Paul Schrader crime movie – complete with a dodgy Tim Roth cameo – fails miserably
A new film with a Paul Schrader script has to be news … but this isn’t exactly new. It’s a grungy, grubby and frankly dreary exploitationer in the straight-to-video mould, with a perfunctory and shallow religious motif and nasty misogynist scenes, which has actually been on the shelf since 2014, after Schrader was replaced as director by Alfonso Pineda Ulloa and Succession’s Brian Cox with Ron Perlman.
Mexican actor José María Yazpik (from Almodóvar’s I’m So Excited) plays a notorious gang enforcer nicknamed the Jesuit (after the Spanish Inquisition’s torture habits); he is newly released from prison in Texas and brooding on going straight when his ex-wife Nadia (Paz Vega) is murdered by her vicious new husband Vincent (Neal McDonough), who also abducts the Jesuit’s son and takes him to Mexico.

Within the burgeoning action sub-genre of fathers scorching earth to save their child, one will not find a film meaner than There Are No Saints. Written by Paul Schrader and directed by Alfonso Pineda Ulloa, this nasty thriller concerns Neto (Jose Maria Yazpi), a former hitman fresh out of prison and determined to get on the straight-and-narrow. Unfortunately, his former cartel employers don’t love the idea. Neither do the corrupt law enforcers they have on payroll. This discontentment extends to his ex-flame Nadia (Paz Vega) and estranged son Julio (Keidrich Sellati). Everyone’s in danger. Turns out Nadia’s new boyfriend (Neal McDonough) is affiliated with the cartel, and kidnaps Julio once the heat is on.
Yazpi is a brooding sort, to be sure, though he lacks bravado for the lead role. In fairness, this film asks him to play a multitude of emotions without the scenes to support the complexity.

One can guess, fairly or not, why there’s some huge gap between a film’s production and its release, but in the case of There Are No Saints—which assembled its creative team, let’s see, nine-and-a-half years ago and finished shooting in May 2013—we can extend one shred of doubt vis-a-vis the screenwriting credit tagged to Paul Schrader. Many years ago he’d written it as The Jesuit with intent to direct, of all people, Oscar Isaac, but financial difficulties held the project and directorial duties were eventually taken up by Alfonso Pineda Ulloa, with José María Yazpik (Narcos) slotted to star. Per IMDb Pro, production began in late 2012. Then?
It’s hard to ascertain what held Saints so catastrophically long. If nothing else Schrader saw a rough cut early into Obama’s second term and spoke well of it, saying “I Loved It! It’s better than...

The Cleaning Lady is still sorting out its ensemble, tapping Oliver Hudson (Rules of Engagement) to join the cast as a series regular. He fills the show’s “FBI agent” void left by Vincent Piazza (Boardwalk Empire), who has exited the midseason drama for creative reasons.
Based on the Argentine series La Chica que Limpia, The Cleaning Lady centers on a whip-smart doctor (Marvel’s Daredevil‘s Élodie Yung) who comes to the U.S. for a medical treatment to save her ailing son. But when the system fails and pushes her into hiding, she refuses to be beaten down and marginalized.

One Shot is a series that seeks to find an essence of cinema history in one single image of a movie. Monte Hellman's Road to Nowhere is exclusively showing on Mubi in the United States starting June 13, 2021.Road to Nowhere is both the title of Hellman’s final work and the film within the film. It’s first seen as a handwritten scrawl on a DVD-r popped into a laptop tray. The camera pushes into the computer screen, Max Renn-like, and the image of a woman doing her nails expands into the full frame. “Velma was always my window into the story” says the voice of Mitchell Haven (Tygh Runyan), the in-film director and surrogate obsessive (both Mh). Mitchell is driven to his own unraveling, like Hellman’s Willet Gashade and The Driver before him, by the single-minded pursuit of an obsession. Here, it’s the cinema itself and the...

Heath Ledger’s medieval comedy classic “A Knight’s Tale” is officially 20 years old as of May 11, 2021. Vulture marked the occasion by discussing the movie’s memorable David Bowie dance sequence with writer-director Brian Helgeland and cast member Shannyn Sossamon. It turns out the scene had been planned and rehearsed using Kc and the Sunshine Band’s “Get Down Tonight,” but Ledger much preferred David Bowie’s “Golden Years.”
“When Heath wanted to sell you on something, you could tell in a second,” Helgeland said. “He would assume this kind of boyishness to him; he’d become nine years old, like out of a Dickens story, like the Artful Dodger.”
Ledger’s pitch to use “Golden Years” instead of “Get Down Tonight” was hard to resist. As the director remembered, “Heath got this big grin on his face. He goes, ‘It’s the same tempo. It’s going to work.’ He said,...

Some films are appreciated from the start — the big blockbusters find their audiences or the acclaimed indies find the critical raves right out of the gate. Then there are films that are ahead of their time, that find a bigger audience as they age, where the appreciation might come a little later thanks to DVDs or television viewings.
When “A Knight’s Tale” opened in theaters on May 11, 2001, it wasn’t without fanfare. It featured rising star Heath Ledger in the lead, a writer-director hot off an Oscar win and a lot of buzz for the fact it mixed modern music with its medieval setting. It made its money back, had its fans and was notable for its fresh-faced cast who would go on to prominent careers. But it wasn’t a runaway hit; some were confused by the anachronisms and simply couldn’t get past a film about jousting that...

Why? It’s a question that almost every baffling minute of Sia’s ill-conceived “Music” inspires you to ask in some form or another, often with a different inflection but always with the same urgency.
Why, against the advice of virtually every living human and the last vestiges of whatever common sense modern civilization has left, did she cast her able-bodied, neurotypical teenage muse Maddie Ziegler as the nonverbal autistic girl whose name lends the story its title? Why does the script feel like an inspirational Instagram post that was brought to life by a witch’s curse? Why don’t any of the film’s stultifying dance sequences even try to advance the plot or allow its characters to meaningfully express how they feel inside? Why do all of them look like rejected Target commercials from a dystopian back-to-school campaign that was commissioned for the kids in “Logan’s Run...

Exclusive: La-based producer and sales firm Clear Horizon is lining up a historical drama about the Symbionese Liberation Army and its kidnapping of heiress Patty Hearst.
Mizmoon will tell the story of Patricia ‘Mizmoon’ Soltisyk, the radicalized college co-ed who co-founded the terrorist group with her lesbian lover and an escaped convict with an obsession for guns and explosives. The group famously carried out bank robberies and murders in the 1970s and kidnapped heiress Hearst, the granddaughter of American publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst. Soltysik was one of the six Sla members killed in a shootout with the Lapd in the mid 70s.
Clear Horizon founder David Brown, an executive producer on recent Julianne Moore-Michelle Williams adaptation After The Wedding, will make his directorial debut on the project, which he will produce with Cynthia Greening and Todd Lundbohm. Script comes from Greening and Tony Clarno, with revisions by Reinhard Denke.
The project is out to cast. Shoot is scheduled for Los Angeles later this year, cast and Covid-19 permitting. We are told the team is working off material from the public domain so have not needed to acquire life rights.
Patty Hearst and the Sla have spawned multiple screen projects over the years including a 1988 movie directed by Paul Schrader and a 2004 PBS doc by Robert Stone.
Brown recently produced The Undertaker’s Wife starring Shannyn Sossamon and John Brotherton and Chasing Nightmares starring Anne Heche and Graham McTavish.
Brown said, “Not only are we looking to push a number of our projects forward, but we want to get the word out to other filmmakers who have a need for funding or partnerships. We still have our doors open at this time.”...

The “Daredevil” alum will star as Reyna Salonga in the drama, an adaptation of the Argentinean series of the same name. She will take over for Shannyn Sossamon, who was originally cast in the pilot earlier this year.

But when the system fails and pushes her into hiding, she refuses to be beaten down and marginalized. Instead, she becomes a cleaning lady for the mob and starts playing the game by her own rules.”

Exclusive: Fox and Warner Bros. TV are recasting the lead of drama pilot The Cleaning Lady. The decision was made after the project’s table read, I hear.
Shannyn Sossamon, who had been originally cast in the title role, is leaving as the character is being tweaked. Search is underway for a replacement The Cleaning Lady, based on the Argentinian series, is filming in New Mexico.
Recastings are unfortunate but inevitable part of broadcast pilot season. Because of the compressed time frame and stiff competition from streaming, a large portion of the more prominent roles are being cast via straight offers without testing, so the table reads provide the first glimpse of the entire cast in character and their chemistry,
Last season, another Fox/Wbtv drama pilot, Prodigal Son, recast its title role after the table read. The pilot went to series and became the top freshman show this season.

Fox has cast Vincent Piazza in its upcoming drama pilot “The Cleaning Lady.”
He joins previously announced series lead Shannyn Sossamon and fellow cast member Ginger Gonzaga. Based on the Argentine series “La Chica Que Limpia,” the show follows Reyna Salonga (Sossamon), a whip-smart Filipina doctor who comes to the U.S. in hopes to get a medical treatment for her critically ill son. Devil May Care: Foy Falters with Campy Horror Flick
Director Ciarán Foy continues with genre in third narrative feature, Eli, a B-grade horror film which takes pains to mask its parameters for some hysterical third act surprises. Children and religion feature heavily once again in Foy’s latest, which hearkens back to his first (and best) offering to date, 2012’s Ireland/UK co-production, Citadel, in which Aneurin Barnard portrayed an agoraphobic father who teams up with a priest to stave off an invasion of feral children in a high-rise.
Landing him enough attention to serve as director-for-hire on 2015’s studio franchise opportunity Sinister 2 (in which James Ransone returned to fend off the evil spirits terrorizing Shannyn Sossamon with her twin boys), it’s a pleasure to see Foy returning to something a bit less contrived this time around.…...
