In case you did not know, a Blade Runner series is in the works and has been shooting since April. Titled Blade Runner 2099, the series was revealed to be in the works in 2021, when Ridley Scott himself confirmed that a pilot and the series’ bible (a reference book for a series with relevant plot and character data) had been written. The series was officially announced in 2022 when the title was also revealed. Filming was set to begin in 2023 but was postponed to April 2024 due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, which paralyzed the entertainment industry for a longer period of time. Now, knowing that the series is currently being filmed, we can also confirm that we have some exciting casting updates.
The Blade Runner franchise wasn’t a franchise initially. It started off as a standalone movie directed by Scott, which starred Harrison Ford and Rutger Hauer in the main roles.

Exclusive: Coming off directing and executive producing the first two episodes of FX’s Shōgun, Jonathan van Tulleken has been tapped to direct and executive produce the first two episodes of another high-profile limited series, Prime Video’s Blade Runner 2099.
Tulleken replaces Jeremy Podeswa, who was originally set to direct the first two episodes but had to step away due to scheduling conflicts as the Blade Runner 2099 production schedule was altered by the WGA strike.
The series was originally slated to film in Belfast last summer. In May, a couple of weeks into the writers strike, it was revealed that, due to the work stoppage, production on Blade Runner 2099 was delayed, likely until spring 2024. Northern Ireland Screen said at the time the project had “been prepping on the ground in Belfast for many months now.”
In October, it was reported that Blade Runner 2099 was moving away from Belfast.

Groovy! For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit “Ash vs. Evil Dead“, the three-season television series that aired on the Starz Network from 2015 through 2018.
One of the most sobering moments of “Ash vs. Evil Dead” came in the original introduction by franchise star Bruce Campbell, who explained that the series was made because fans wouldn’t shut up. Indeed, fans had been asking for years for another adventure with Ashley Williams after Army of Darkness, and the team finally obliged in 2015. The climate was right for the return of the Evil Dead at the time as studios and television networks were investing in horror series. Developed by Sam Raimi, Ivan Raimi, and Tom Spezialy, Starz’s “Ash vs. Evil Dead” wasn’t just a dry run for fans. For the first time in nearly a decade, a new "Evil Dead" movie is on the way. "Evil Dead Rise" officially has a first trailer, which means it's a real movie, which is still hard to believe after years of sequel discussions and rumors. Writer-director Lee Cronin has assured fans that the film will exist in the same universe as the original Sam Raimi classic, featuring buckets of blood and plenty of Deadites — despite the fact that, according to early synopsis from Deadline, it's moving the action from a secluded cabin setting to a Los Angeles apartment.
Ahead of the trailer's release, word was that "Evil Dead Rise" wouldn't feature some of the franchise fixtures Raimi fans know and love, like Bruce Campbell's Ash or Raimi himself behind the camera. But both Raimi and Campbell are producing along with Ghost House Pictures co-founder Rob Tapert, meaning the new flick...

Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television are officially teaming up to carve out their own corner of the superhero craze. A slew of Marvel characters are heading to the small screen after MGM+, the linear network formerly known as Epix, and Amazon Prime Video ordered a suite of live-action series from Sony Pictures Television.
Spider-Man spinoff series Silk: Spider Society, which has been in the works for some time, will be the first show to emerge from the pact with The Walking Dead’s Angela Kang set as showrunner.

Exact plot details are being kept under wraps, but the title indicates the show will take place fifty years after the events of “Blade Runner 2049,” the 2017 sequel to the original “Blade Runner.” Silka Luisa serves as showrunner and executive producer, with Ridley Scott also executive producing under his Scott Free Productions banner.
Michael Green, the co-writer of “Blade Runner 2049,” will also executive produce with Alcon Entertainment co-founders Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, Alcon’s head of television Ben Roberts, David W. Zucker and Clayton Krueger of Scott Free, Cynthia Yorkin, Frank Giustra, and Isa Dick Hackett. Tom Spezialy has joined the writers room...

Exclusive: Eight-time Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper is launching a new production banner, Deadline has learned. At the same time, Cooper and Weston Middleton at the new label are set to produce Hyperion based on the four-volume series of Dan Simmons novels, a project Cooper has had long in the works.
Hyperion now moves over from TV’s Syfy to Warner Bros. motion pictures with Oscar winner Graham King still attached to produce under his Gk Films.
Previously conceived as a limited series for Syfy, Hyperion now will be adapted as feature by Tom Spezialy, the Emmy-winning EP of HBO’s limited series Watchmen. A search for a director is underway. Tom Spezialy executive produced HBO’s “Watchmen,” one of the most acclaimed superhero television shows in recent memory. Now, he’s setting his sights on a Marvel character via “Silk,” Sony Television Pictures’ upcoming live-action series based on the Spider-Man character.
Deadline recently reported that Spezialy, whose credits also include “The Leftovers” and “Castle Rock,” has signed an overall deal with Amazon Studios. Part of that deal reportedly includes Spezialy serving as an executive producer and showrunner for “Silk,” which hails from Sony Pictures Television. The series is reportedly headed to Amazon Prime Video, which would make “Silk” one of the only upcoming Marvel-branded shows to not premiere on Disney+.
Spezialy will reportedly executive produce alongside Laureen Moon (“Atypical”), who wrote the “Silk” television adaptation, which is based on the Korean-American comic book superhero who is closely associated with Spider-Man. The series is also backed by veterans of recent Spider-Man...

Having a hot streak of a night at the 2020 Emmy Awards tonight, Watchmen capped it just now with an Outstanding Limited Series win and a call to meet the challenges of history and today.
“History is mystery, it is broken into a million puzzle pieces and many are missing,” said series creator Damon Lindelof on Sunday in his acceptance speech for the HBO show. “We know where those pieces are, but we don’t seek them out because we know finding them will hurt,” he added in a “Remember Tulsa ’21” t-shirt and standing in front of the masked writing and producing Watchmen team. “Sometimes we cause that hurt, maybe we even benefited from it, but we have to name it before we can repair it.”

“This is so freakin’ weird,” said a clearly joyful King as she accepted her Emmy for outstanding actress in a limited series or movie for Watchmen, her fourth career Emmy win.
King thanked her fellow nominees, Kerry Washington, Cate Blanchett, Octavia Spencer and Shira Haas, and the TV Academy “for choosing me to represent the best in the community.” She also gave a major shout-out to series creator Damon Lindelof. “Thank you for your brilliant mind, thank you for choosing all of us to join this journey as you stepped outside of your comfort zone, led us on a journey where we could bring art and truth to power,” she said from her home.
King was honored tonight for her portrayal of Angela Agbar in Lindelof’s HBO drama series Watchmen, which is nominated tonight for 26 Emmys, including Outstanding Limited Series, more than any other show this year.

On Watchmen, VFX supervisor Erik Henry was presented with a project of incredible ambition and scale, finding in the series the opportunity to bring myriad worlds and time periods to life, while offering a fresh take on an iconic comic book world.
Based on a DC Comics series created by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, Damon Lindelof’s drama takes place in an alternate version of the 20th century, in which vigilantes—once celebrated as heroes—have been outlawed, due to their violent methods of extracting justice. In this version of America, episodes of racial violence erupt in Tulsa, Oklahoma, as yellow-masked police officers face off with a white supremacist group known as the Seventh Kavalry.
A two-time Emmy winner, Henry found Watchmen to be quite the page-turner, as well as a project that allowed for ample experimentation. “As a visual effects supervisor, you get these moments where it’s like,...

In HBO’s Watchmen, costume designer Meghan Kasperlik found the opportunity to put her stamp on a classic comic book world, first brought to life by Dave Gibbons and Alan Moore.
Created by Damon Lindelof, the gritty drama is set in an alternate reality, exploring episodes of racial violence erupting in Tulsa, Oklahoma, as the police face off with a white supremacist group known as the Seventh Kavalry. Putting themselves in the middle of this mayhem are a number of superheroes, each with their own idiosyncratic fashions.
In her first interview with Lindelof and executive producer Tom Spezialy, Kasperlik didn’t know what series was being made—and while she’d seen Zack Snyder’s 2009 film adaptation of Watchmen, she wasn’t as familiar with the graphic novels on which it was based.
Pitching herself for the project without seeing a single outline or script, Kasperlik was immediately drawn to...

Both of the winning scripts are nominated for Oscars on February 9.

The Bong Joon Ho and Han Jin Won-penned South Korean class thriller “Parasite” won Best Original Screenplay and Taika Waititi’s Nazi satire “Jojo Rabbit” won Best Adapted Screenplay at the Writers Guild Awards Saturday night.

The Writers Guild of America revealed its winners for the 72nd annual edition of its awards, which were held simultaneously at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles and at the Edison Ballroom in New York City on February 1. About 15,000 WGA members vote on the best writing of the prior calendar year in an array of genres.
But beware Oscar predictors: Often a few film scripts nominated for an Academy Award are deemed ineligible. Only screenplays written under the guild’s guidelines or those of several international partners are allowed to vie for the WGA Awards. That accounts for its relatively low success rate at previewing the eventual Oscar nominees compared to the other guilds.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Watchmen” Episode 9, “See How They Fly” — the season finale.]
Setting aside for a moment the collective power of “Watchmen’s” unmasked story, the symmetry of its ending is absolutely beautiful. A series that begins in Tulsa’s Dreamland Theater ends there. Devastating attacks are happening outside both times Will Reeves sits in his cushioned seat, staring above the stage. Over 100 years ago, his mother is nearby, and a century later his granddaughter (Regina King) sits by his side. When he leaves the theater as a boy, his family is about to be destroyed. When he walks out an old man, his family has been united, minus one sacrificial figure.
The question invoked by Will’s parallel beginning and ending is simple: What’s changed? And the answer is as fitting as it is painful: not enough. For Will, his lifetime of suffering and loss culminates in a reunion; in being...

Much of what “Watchmen” is about — and Damon Lindelof’s substantial adaptation of Alan Moore’s sprawling graphic novel is about quite a lot — can be summed up in a joke. Well, it’s not really a joke, but the cunning and cutting Jean Smart still sells it that way.
“You know how you can tell the difference between a masked cop and a vigilante?” Smart, as FBI Agent Laurie Blake, asks.
No-bullshit Tulsa police detective Angela Abar, played by Regina King, answers plainly, as expected: “No.”
“Me either,” Laurie says — and that’s the end of the joke.
Masks, identities, and the murky, muddled truth they form are central themes of “Watchmen.” If the cops and criminals wear masks, how do you tell them apart? Who’s the hero and who’s the villain? Who, in other words, do you trust? Looking beyond the veils people share with the world,...

We knew that Damon Lindelof’s Watchmen series based on Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ iconic comic was coming to HBO in October. Now we know exactly when the Regina King-starrer will debut.

Directed by Nicole Kassell from a script by Leftovers alum Lindelof, the pilot for this sequel of sorts to the borderline dystopia depicted in the award-winning 1980s comic series finds an America ruled by long-serving President Robert Redford. Its an alternative 2019 America where the best intentions have seen technology curtailed, the police are now hidden by masks like the outlawed superheroes, and white supremacy has picked up the legacy of the infamous Rorschach.
The series also stars Don Johnson as the Tulsa police chief, Jeremy Irons as an aged and seemingly dispirited Ozymandias, and Jean Smart...

After dropping an Easter egg-rich new Watchmen trailer during the spotlight of Comic-Con, Damon Lindelof today tore right into the heart of the upcoming HBO series based on Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ classic late-1980s comic.
“What in 2019 is the equivalent of the nuclear standoff between the Americans and the Russians?” the sometimes-punchy Leftovers co-creator postulated during the Watchmen panel at TCA on Wednesday. “It is race and the police,” Lindelof said, answering his own question as star Regina King and Ep/director Nicole Kassell — both Leftovers alums — sat next to him on stage at the Beverly Hilton.
“There is no defeating white supremacy — it’s not going away,” Ep Lindelof explained of the hate groups that populate the nine-episode Watchmen. “There are no easy answers and grandiose solution,” he added, noting this was not going to play out like your standard superheroes saga on the small or big screen.
