“At first, I thought they were a rock and roll band because they all kind of came in with bandanas and long hair and beards and stuff like that,” reveals Ron Howard about his first encounter with Jim Henson and his team behind the Muppets. For our recent webchat he says that it was his one-and-only 1970s encounter with Henson, adding “I did cross paths with him one time backstage at this crazy prime-time live variety show that ABC was trying to hatch as a regular series. They didn’t wind up continuing with it, but were both guests on an it, and for a brief moment, we kind of intersected.”
Howard is the director and producer behind the new Disney+ documentary “Jim Henson Idea Man” about the legendary founder of the Muppets. Henson’s children gave Howard and his documentary team full access to the family and company archives.

Jim Henson was born in Mississippi and raised there and in Maryland. He answered an ad for a Washington, D.C. television station in the 1950s … they were looking for a puppeteer … and astoundingly, Henson got the job with no previous puppetry experience. Partnering with Jane Nebel, who would eventually become his wife, the two created the beginnings of the Muppet phenomenon by gearing their comedy towards adults. Eventually forming a company, Jim and Jane were able to get by through commercials and TV work through the 1960s, until Henson practically invented Sesame Street in 1969. Always itching for new avenues of creativity, he launched “The Muppet Show” in...

Jim Henson is a man who needs no introduction. He’s a household name, famous for his intricate puppets and his creative genius. Throughout the late 20th century, he captivated people worldwide with fun characters and innovations in puppetry that could only be thought up by someone as gifted and ingenious as Henson himself. He brought smiles to millions of faces, and his work has forever left an impact on the world of entertainment as a whole. I’ve always been a huge fan of the Muppets ever since childhood; I remember putting Muppet movies on VHS on repeat, and the characters have always been a joy to watch. Reflecting on the work of Jim Henson is a fitting way to honor his legacy, so I’d like to take a look back at his works in the world of puppetry and the impact they have left. Henson was a...

We humans know that when someone asks us in passing, “How are you?” we are to say “I’m well, thanks, how are you?” And then we go about our day, miserable or not. But Muppets not so smart. Sometimes Muppets not understand human psyche or how to read room. And that’s just the situation Elmo found himself in this week, making the mistake of asking people who probably spend a good chunk of their day on social media how they’re doing.
In his Monday morning check into his 525,000 followers’ well being, the beloved Muppet asked, “Elmo is just checking in! How is everybody doing?” Any guesses as to how the majority of the 16,000+ responses went?

The Thursday night promo for this weekend’s Saturday Night Live took a dark turn.
In the third segment of the promo standups, host Dakota Johnson and musical guest Justin Timberlake heard SNL cast member Sarah Sherman lament her “Oscar snub,” a topic on the radar thanks to the nominations missing Greta Gerwig for Best Director and Margot Robbie for Best Actress.
Timberlake wonders: “Wait, what movie were you in?”
“No, not that kind of Oscar snub,” Sherman sats. “I asked Oscar the Grouch out, and he said, ‘Sorry, honey: I live in the trash. I don’t date it.’”
“You know what?” Timberlake responds angrily. “Just tell me how to get to Sesame Street and I will beat his a–!”

Sesame Street is relying on talent from the Warner Bros. Discovery neighborhood for three upcoming specials on Max.
Guest stars from Food Network and HGTV will be part of special programming with the theme of giving back, featuring some of Sesame Street’s most famous residents including Elmo, Cookie Monster, Oscar The Grouch and more.
Sesame Workshop’s head of creative Kay Wilson Stallings says the 22-minute episodes mark “the first unscripted specials where we go into the community to help children and families.”
“Whether it’s holding a bake sale to raise money for a cause, turning trash into treasure to spotlight an animal shelter, or remodeling an underfunded theater classroom, all three specials stress the importance of kindness, teamwork, being resourceful and helping others,” said Wilson Stallings, executive vp, chief creative development and production, in a statement released Thursday.

Back in 2021, "Saturday Night Live" debuted recorded sketches from the comedy group known as Please Don't Destroy. Having carved out a viral comedy presence on social media, the trio of Martin Herlihy, John Higgins, and Ben Marshall have established themselves as the latest successors to The Lonely Island's game-changing SNL Digital Shorts. Frequently, Please Don't Destroy's sketches have been among the best efforts in each new episode of "SNL," such as the one below featuring Taylor Swift. Beyond that, Herlihy, Higgins, and Marshall have also been responsible for writing plenty of other memorable sketches from the past two seasons.
Please Don't Destroy was meant to make their big screen debut this year, having written the script for a feature film produced by longtime comedy filmmakers Judd Apatow and Jimmy Miller. The film was slated to be released in theaters this August, but sadly, Variety reports that the yet-to-be-titled Please Don't...

Ken Jeong is known for taking big swings with his guesses on “The Masked Singer,” and this week is no different. But at least this time, he has some moral support from Oscar the Grouch.
Yes, Wednesday night’s episode brings quite a few guests to the show, including Oscar and his Sesame Street neighbors. That’s because he, Elmo, Big Bird, Cookie Monster, and the gang all perform on the show too..
Competing on “The Masked Singer” this week is the reigning champ Squirrel — who Ken swore last week is Margot Robbie — along with new challengers Jackalope and Fairy. And Ken is already certain that Fairy is Angelina Jolie.

John Oliver took Fox News Channel to the mat on Sunday night during the 10th-season premiere of Last Week Tonight.
At the top of his HBO talk show, which has been on hiatus since November, Oliver brought up the court filings that were made public last week in a $1.6 billion defamation lawsuit against Fox News related to the 2020 election fraud claims.
Dominion Voting Systems, which sells electronic voting hardware and software, is suing Fox News and parent company Fox Corporation, claiming some Fox News employees deliberately amplified false claims that Dominion had changed votes in the 2020 election, and that Fox provided a platform for guests to make false and defamatory statements.

John Oliver returned with Last Week Tonight after a three-month hiatus and it wasn’t long before he started taking swipes at Fox News.
The HBO Max host started off the night by talking about the defamation lawsuit Dominion Voting Systems filed against the cable network. Filings that were brought to light had the Fox News hosts like Tucker Carlson, Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham going on-air peddling election fraud claims while privately saying it was “B.S.” and “crazy.”
“Wow, if I were a Fox viewer, I’d feel pretty betrayed by that,” Oliver said. “This is like finding out that Big Bird regularly texted Elmo, ‘F**k them kids,’ and Elmo agrees.”
Oliver continued, “This filing shows the extent to which Fox hosts did not believe the sh** that they were selling, which is completely fine if you work for QVC and you have to fill an hour on...

President Biden called for unity many, many times during his second State of the Union address on Tuesday night. And indeed, unity was achieved during the speech — thanks to Kyrsten Sinema and Marjorie Taylor Greene’s outfit choices for the evening. Even the hosts of “The View” had to mock them on Wednesday.
As folks live tweeted the broadcast, people came together as one, largely comparing Sinema’s bright yellow, ruffled dress to “Sesame Street” icon Big Bird. Others focused on Marjorie Taylor Greene, who opted for a white coat, with a very fluffy collar piece. For “The View” host Alyssa Farah Griffin, that coat was actually a bit traumatizing.
“I was distracted by Marjorie Taylor Greene’s jacket! It looked like she skinned my puppy!” she said.

President Joe Biden’s second State of the Union address emphasized bipartisanship again and again. But while he may or not have achieved it, Arizona Senator Kyrsten Sinema certainly did when she brought Americans of all stripes together to make fun of her outfit.
Now Sinema, the once-Democratic Senator who ostentatiously re-registered as an independent last November, has been frequently called out for what critics say is attention-seeking behavior. But she may have outdone herself with her State of the Union look: An extremely bright yellow dress with huge, extremely frilly sleeves that had people comparing her to everything from Big Bird to a Teletubby.
One user said Sinema skinned Big Bird to get her outfit.

Another one noted Sinema’s classic video game energy.

When director Todd Phillips brought us his dark, gritty take on the Joker in "Joker," we also got one of the best "Saturday Night Live" spoofs in recent years: "Grouch," starring David Harbour as a dark, gritty version of Oscar the Grouch living in a dark, gritty version of "Sesame Street."
But it's 2023 now, and we've moved on; dark and gritty is out, and bleak and moody is in. This week's "Saturday Night Live" host Pedro Pascal got the chance to spoof his own show, HBO's prestige drama adaptation of post-apocalyptic video game "The Last of Us," with a bleak, moody, prestige drama adaptation of another iconic game.

I scratched my head when I realized that the fuzzy and felt huggable monster gang of "Sesame Street" never really had a live show after five decades. Yes, they've made live appearances outside of PBS (with also a somewhat shaky streaming residency at HBO Max), like the "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" show. But I realized that they haven't really starred in a live theatrical production. And when I mean the Sesame Street gang, I do not mean the "Sesame Street Live!" shows where our tiny gang is converted into adult-shaped body suits.

I Love You, You Hate Me Trailer: Barney The Dinosaur Gets A Docuseries In The Vein Of Feels Good Man
As a kid of the 1990s, it is impossible to explain the impact Barney the Dinosaur had on my own upbringing and the childhoods of the generations of children that followed. The giant purple singing dinosaur quickly became a beloved hero for toddlers and elementary school-aged kiddos everywhere, with educational messages about emotions, friendship, compassion, and basic academics hidden through song and dance. The dinosaur sensation was a children's entertainment paladin that rivaled Big Bird and Elmo on "Sesame Street," and his loving message, and the earworm of the "I Love You" song, made him a hero to little viewers all around the globe.
It also quickly turned Barney into a conduit for hatred, as conspiracy theories and violent subversions of the show's characters were brought into the fold by people desperate to put an end to the character. In a new 2-part docuseries for Peacock, "I Love You, You...

At Sesame, where Wells also served as executive vice president, he oversaw an aggressive international expansion for all things Elmo and Big Bird.

Trevor Noah mocked Steve Bannon during Thursday’s episode of “The Daily Show” while discussing allegations that Donald Trump’s former chief strategist took money from Trump supporters who thought they were paying to build a wall along the U.S. Southern border.
Bannon pleaded not guilty yesterday to money laundering, fraud and conspiracy — telling reporters as he was escorted into the courtroom: “This is what happens in the last days of a dying regime. They will never shut me up. They’ll have to kill me first.”
“What a little bitch. Why don’t you get into a shootout with the cops?” Noah said, referring to Bannon’s remarks. “This guy’s acting like a gangster while he’s surrendering to the police. ‘You’ll never take me alive, coppers! Please, put the handcuffs on gently. My wrists are so soft.'”

It's pretty comforting to know that "Sesame Street" has been accessible to generations of children across 52 years of television and shows no signs of going away. The educational program has been an invaluable learning tool as the youngest of kids are taught the alphabet, manners, eating healthy, how to count, and a slew of important life lessons. Everyone is welcome on Sesame Street, which means guest stars often pop in once in a while to help out Elmo, Big Bird and all the other puppet residents.

Elmo just got a Covid-19 vaccine shot — in a new public service announcement from Sesame Workshop aimed at persuading human parents to get their young kids Covid shots, too.
The beloved red Muppet is three-and-a-half-years-old, according to Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit educational organization behind “Sesame Street.” That means he recently became eligible for a Covid shot, now that the vaccines have been approved for children 5 and under.
“Yeah, there was a little pinch. But it was Ok!” Elmo says in the spot, which also features his dad, Louie. (Watch the PSA below.)
“Was it safe? Was it the right decision?” Louie says in the PSA. “I talked to our pediatrician so I could make the right choice. I learned that Elmo getting vaccinated is the best way to keep himself, our friends, neighbors and everyone else healthy and enjoying the things they love.”

One of the most sought-after lost episodes of “Sesame Street” has been unearthed by Internet archivists, as a rare encounter between Big Bird and the Wicked Witch of the West from “The Wizard of Oz” is now available to view online.
Back in 1976, actress Margaret Hamilton was asked by Sesame Workshop to reprise her role as the Wicked Witch for a “Sesame Street” episode, 37 years after her iconic “Oz” performance opposite Judy Garland. The 73-year-old Hamilton agreed, filming a sketch teaching children to face their fears in which The Wicked Witch demands that the denizens of Sesame Street return her broom, even threatening to turn Big Bird into a giant feather duster.
But according to the show’s producers, the episode prompted hordes of angry parents to call in, complaining that the Wicked Witch had terrified their children. As a result, Hamilton’s appearance on “Sesame Street” was never re-aired...

What’s the magic formula that has made “Sesame Street” such an enduring hit? Midway through Marilyn Agrelo’s “Street Gang,” star Roscoe Orman offers a succinct answer: “serious intent and joy.” Initially conceived of as a then-revolutionary combination of children’s entertainment and educational instruction — literally inventing the idea of educational TV — “Sesame Street” has only maintained and expanded its lofty ambitions over the course of more than five decades. That success, Agrelo’s film sagely argues, was no accident, but instead the product of careful, considerate, and forward-thinking planning. It may be magic, but boy, does it take work.
While Agrelo’s documentary, based on Michael Davis’ similarly exhaustive nonfiction book of the same name, does occasionally nod to the price of that work, the film mostly tracks the story of what happens when a good idea is undertaken by good people. Many of those good people might...

The 2020 Emmy Awards were unlike any in history due to Covid-19, but they rose above the restrictions and delivered a very entertaining show. Jimmy Kimmel hosted from a deserted Staples Arena with participants appearing via video conference from their homes, as many poked fun at the unusual arrangement.
The tone was generally upbeat, but the Emmys’ tribute to notable industry figures that have died over the last year proved to be quite moving. It was soundtracked by H.E.R. covering Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U” and honored Glee star Naya Rivera, presenter Regis Philbin and Big Bird performer Caroll Spinney (among many others). Most impactful, though, was the appearance of Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman, whose death last month after secretly battling cancer shocked and saddened the world. The montage concluded with footage of Boseman delivering a speech against a backdrop of the Wakandan Ancestral Plane while shooting stars passed through the sky.

The film from “Portlandia” creator Jonathan Krisel was first slated for a release in January 2021 before being pushed back to the summer this past July. It’s now slated for release on the same day as “Nimona,” the animated action and adventure film from 20th Century Fox and Disney.
TheWrap previously reported that shooting on the film had been delayed nine months until April 2020, but at the time, it was still on pace to hit a release date on Jan. 15, 2021.
