Walt Garrison, who won a Super Bowl with the Dallas Cowboys and competed as a rodeo cowboy, has died at 79. The NFL team posted the notice on its website Thursday that Garrison died overnight. It did not give a cause of death.
Garrison played nine years in Dallas and retired in 1974 as the No. 3 rusher and No. 4 receiver in franchise history. He is still fourth on Dallas’ all-time list with 4.32 yards per carry and ninth with 3,491 rushing yards.
But it was Garrison’s rodeo career that made him stand out. During his rookie season, the Cowboys said Garrison would compete in local rodeos as a steer wrestler, then get back to the team hotel before 11 p.m. curfew.
“I wasn’t starting,” Garrison recalled. “I was returning punts and kicks and covering on the kamikaze squad, that’s all I was doing. And hell, you could get hurt worse on them than you can rodeoing.

Exclusive: Emmy-award winning director Steve Trout of NFL Films was sitting in a nondescript hotel conference room in Dallas, the clock ticking towards the biggest shoot of a documentary to be called The Perfect 10.
“Yesterday, we pre-lit everything,” Trout told Deadline. “Today was a full day of rehearsal.” If he was feeling pressure, he wasn’t letting on.
In the morning it would be game on: filming a group of football legends as they assembled for the first time—the only men to win a Heisman Trophy and be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Marcus Allen, Tim Brown, Earl Campbell, Tony Dorsett, Barry Sanders, Roger Staubach, and Charles Woodson, sitting down for a once-in-a-lifetime conversation as multiple cameras rolled.
“If you go by hardware, it really is the greatest collection of football talent at one place in one time,” Trout said. “It’s the coolest clubhouse in football history.

New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick is the latest onetime ally to back away from Donald Trump in the wake of the assault on the U.S. Capitol last week by the president’s supporters.
In a statement obtained by ESPN Monday night, Belichick declined to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Trump. The legendary coach singled out “the tragic events of last week” for his decision, apparently referring to the acts of insurrection by Trump supporters.
Belichick won six Super Bowls with the Patriots after he took over as coach in 2000. He is the NFL’s winningest active head coach and third on the all-time list.
Belichick publicly supported Trump when he ran for office. He was named to the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition in 2018. The team visited Trump at the White House after winning the Super Bowl in 2017. But when it won again...

When Old 97’s singer Rhett Miller was a kid in the Seventies, he worshipped Roger Staubach, the quick-on-his-feet quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys. Staubach was so much of a figure in Miller’s life that he even haunted his subconscious.
He remembers vividly a surreal dream he had one humid day as a nine-year-old while on a family vacation in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Hearing him describe it, it sounds like something out of a Fellini film.
“I can remember to this day what it looked like,” he tells Rolling Stone.

The Old 97’s began recording their new album Twelfth in Nashville this spring, on the very day that tornadoes decimated sections of the city. That March night, from the floor-to-ceiling windows of their rented condo in the city’s Melrose neighborhood, the band watched transformers explode in the distance and debris blow down their street.
Almost six years earlier, Old 97’s singer and principal songwriter Rhett Miller was in the middle of his own storm — a disorienting, drawn-out battle with booze and weed that can be heard all over the...

Post-rush hour, the drive from the Beverly Wilshire in Beverly Hills to the Los Angeles Rams’ practice facility in Thousand Oaks, Calif. is a manageable 50 minutes. On Friday, Nov. 15, most of the core broadcast team for NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” — analyst Cris Collinsworth, sideline reporter Michele Tafoya, executive producer Fred Gaudelli, director Drew Esocoff and researcher Andy Freeland — make that trip together in a luxury van, departing the hotel shortly after 11 a.m. Laptops open, Collinsworth and Tafoya are prepping for the interviews they will do with players and Rams head coach Sean McVay after they spend more than an hour observing the team’s practice.
But they and the crew members are also talking about the news of the morning — the suspension that the NFL handed down to Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett for hitting the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Mason Rudolph in the head with the quarterback’s own helmet.

He first won over the city of Dallas with his play at quarterback, then won over the country with his folksy, down-home broadcasting style. Now, Don Meredith will be remembered as a legend. On Sunday, December 5, Don Meredith died after suffering a massive brain hemorrhage in Santa Fe, New Mexico at the age of 72. Don Meredith first became known to NFL football fans when he was named the starting quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys in 1965, He then led the team to its first-ever winning season, and then led the Cowboys to two consecutive NFL title games, losing in both. Dandy Don turned the Dallas Cowboys into winners, and they eventually went on to become “America’s Team.” In a city that was brand new to professional sports, Don Meredith almost single-handedly put Dallas on the map, and became the first of...
