"You're just never satisfied because you know, like, there's someone else right next to you going harder." Utopia has revealed an official trailer for a documentary film titled Trilogy: New Wave, a surfing movie about three rising surf stars. Set for release in September on VOD and in theaters later this summer. More than a decade has passed since the original Trilogy (2007), a classic surf film directed by Taylor Steele, was released. Since then, surfing has transitioned from countercultural pastime to mainstream sport worldwide. Trilogy: New Wave examines this evolution with a new lens, offering an unexpected perspective of surfing's present. Three elite surfers travel to eight remote destinations searching for pristine waves and an escape from the stress of competition. This film follows Ethan Ewing, Griffin Colapinto, & Seth Moniz as they balance their careers with a desire to rediscover the joy of surfing, free from contest scores. From pastime to mainstream sport,...

The CW recently picked up the US distribution rights to Australia’s Barons, a surfing drama set in the early 1970s, and will launch the series on Monday, May 29, 2023 at 9pm Et/Pt as part of their summer primetime lineup. Barons was created by Liz Doran, Michael Lawrence (Bra Boys) and John Molloy (The Gloaming) and aired in Australia in 2022.
Acclaimed surf director Taylor Steele – a filmmaker credited with helping to revolutionize the surf genre – was involved as an executive producer and directed a special surf unit charged with shooting scenes on the water. The CW has always had a thing or two for an international acquisition, and it seems that this strategy is continuing under new ownership.
The network has acquired British supernatural drama series The Rising and Australian surfer drama Barons for its summer lineup. Both series will debut on Monday, May 29, with The Rising airing at 8 p.m. and Barons at 9.
It comes after Nexstar acquired the network and brought in Brad Schwartz to oversee programming. Deadline has revealed that the network will lean further into unscripted programming, with the hire of Heather Olander and the recent pickup of FBoy Island, and it seems global drama is also on the cards as it trims its original scripted budget.
The Rising comes from Sky in the UK, as Deadline revealed back in 2019, and is a remake of Belgian supernatural crime thriller Hotel Beau Séjour.

Business and the beach are set to collide in the ABC’s Barons, an eight-part ’70s-set surfing drama from Fremantle, Micanical Media and 2Jons, due to kick off later this year in Nsw.
The ABC has been developing the series, created by Micanical’s Michael Lawrence, 2Jon’s John Molloy and scribe Liz Doran, since 2019, confirming that it has taken it to commission today.
Shawn Seet and Emmy-Award winning surf director Taylor Steele will helm the drama, which has parallels to the Billabong and Quiksilver sagas.

Tribeca Film Festival may not rival the bidding wars of Sundance or studio tentpoles at SXSW. But it has cornered the market on cast reunions and Q&A sessions. This year is no exception, as the festival has lined up the makers of “Schindler’s List” (including Steven Spielberg), “Scarface” (Al Pacino and Michelle Pfeiffer) and conversations from Bradley Cooper and John Legend. And then there are the movies playing throughout Manhattan, from April 18 through 29. Here are nine titles that could break out on the indie scene.

Holding On.is the brainchild of Sydney directors and old friends Simon Bruncke and Trent Beattie.
It centres on the 'Skid Kids', six bodyboarding-mad kids from Cronulla who found fame in the 70's.
The road to making the film began when Bruncke graduated from university and started working for Taylor Steele, a veteran producer of surf movies.
"He took a chance on me to run his Australian operations, which was mostly marketing, sales and distribution on all his films, putting together premieres and things like that", Bruncke said. "I loved it"..
That gig led to the director working with Garage Entertainment, the outfit behind 2007's Bra Boys (Holding On is also narrated by a famous actor, though this time it's David Wenham instead of Russell Crowe)..
Garage is now looking after the film's distribution in Australia/ Nz, while Xtreme Video has taken other territories.

For more than seven years, Angus Stone has been well known as one half of the critically acclaimed, folk-singing sibling duo, Angus & Julia Stone. But now the young Australian singer and songwriter has begun to earn accolades on his own since he just wrapped up his solo tour through North America, playing songs off his newest album, "Broken Brights."
This week, Stone is debuting a video created for the ninth single on the album, "Monsters." Produced in collaboration with Evil Twin partners Taylor Steele and Todd Diciurcio, the short film is a visual trek through an imaginary wooded universe, populated by mythical characters and gorgeous Aussie landscapes. Recently, we had the opportunity to speak with Angus over the phone, who told us about the making of "Monsters" as well as his love of Wes Anderson and the draw of bigger whiskey bottles stateside.

I am running late, so I park the Ducati on the sidewalk and toss the keys to an eager production assistant. It is incredibly hot and crowded as I push my way through a crowd of background actors to the location, which has been carefully designed to look like a gallery. Wardrobe has given me an antique Ramones t-shirt (which actually has some of Debbie Harry's vintage blood on the sleeve) and a period Hugo Boss Nazi SS uniform jacket with five firing-squad bullet holes through the left lapel (vintage blood carefully removed). Also, store-torn Alexander McQueen jeans (a gift from an Olsen twin, I think) and flip-flops, which are decorated with pictures of colorful monkeys.

Nice move, Bret Easton Ellis and Paul Schrader, you've definitely got people's attention now. "American Psycho" scribe Ellis has revealed on Twitter that their upcoming L.A. erotic thriller, "The Canyons," will now star Lindsay Lohan alongside porn star James Deen, who was an early pick by Ellis.
Having successfully completed their Kickstarter initiative, casting is well and truly underway with these two the first additions. Deen will play protagonist Christian, a "trust fund kid, power player and major manipulator, who is a film producer that enjoys filming his own three-way sex sessions," while Lohan will play his girlfriend/former model, Tara, who "has sold her pride for the material comforts Christian can provide." Has Lindsay Lohan even heard of Ingmar Bergman's Persona [you'll recognize the above still from an article I posted back in January] or Jean-Luc Godard's Contempt? Sure, co-directors Richard Phillips and Taylor Steele of this new short film (if you can call it that) titled "Lindsay Lohan" have seen them and drew inspiration from them for this short, but the idea of passing Lohan off as some sort of art film muse sort of pains me.
I'll admit, the film by painter Richard Phillips is very pretty, but is anyone taking this perennial bad girl serious at all?
The short will be featured at the Venice Film Festival in something called "Commercial Break" where it will be played on a giant Jumbotron along the Grand Canal in Venice. Meanwhile, Lohan is under house arrest after pleading no contest to stealing a $2,500 necklace. Classy.
You can read more about the short in New York Times' T Magazine right here where Phillips says,...

Just this morning, I brought you the trailer and DVD art for the upcoming documentary, The Drifter. And, wouldn’t you know, now I have two tickets to give away to our La readers (or, anyone who promises to be in La-la Land by 8Pm this Thursday). The Drifter will be showing at the Montalban Theater, starting at 8Pm, this Thursday, November 5. If you win our nifty two-ticket set, you’ll get into the screening, the VIP lounge for drinks and food, get to take in a special acoustic performance by Rob Machado and Jon Swift, and be there for a live Q&A with Rob, Jon, and director Taylor Steele.
