It's sex, blood and rock 'n' roll in Rob Stefaniuk's comedy horror flick 'Suck' (not to be confused with the upcoming theatrical release 'Vampire's Suck' - and so does that movie apparently) is set to arrive on DVD and Blu-ray here in the UK on 18 October. Suck hits DVD and blu-ray on September 28th.
It takes a brave writer to name their movie Suck - you're pretty much daring reviewers to come up with a clever spin on why your movie does just that. It's good for writer/director/star Rob Stefaniuk that his sophomore effort behind the camera is pretty damned good. A combination of a smart cast, some moments of visual inventiveness, and a clever script save the movie from the curse of its title.
A small confession: I was actually prepared to dislike the movie in its opening minutes, thanks to some terrible vampire makeup and worse music but I got over it.
Suck follows a struggling Canadian band called The Winners after their bassist, Jennifer (Jessica Paré), has a fateful encounter with a 300-year-old vampire named Queeny. The band's hapless lead, Joey (Stefaniuk) knows something's off with his ex-girlfriend and current bandmate...

After a couple of light on horror weeks, we are finally treated to a bumper crop of new releases. Headlining the week is Frozen, which is just what we in Southern California need to stave off our current heat wave. A couple of oldies but goodies are out, too, as Madman celebrates its Happy 30th Birthday and the original King Kong comes to Blu-ray. Fangoria's eight FrightFest titles bow as well.
Frozen
Directed by Adam Green
In Frozen (review), Adam Green has crafted a potent combination of absolute terror and compelling human drama that will stick with you long after you've left the theatre or turned off the DVD. One thing's for sure: The next time your friends invite you on a ski weekend, odds are you'll try to convince them to head to the beach instead. Frozen stars Shawn Ashmore, Emma Bell and Kevin Zegers.
Buy the Blu-ray or the regular DVD.

I don’t think I’m alone when I say that I’ve had enough vampires and zombies. For now. It’s just…enough. So when I received word that I’d be checking this one out, I immediately pulled up the trailer, and was surprised to find myself looking forward to Suck (out on DVD and Blu-ray September 28 from E1 Entertainment). Writer/director/lead actor Rob Stefaniuk has combined sharp cheese with dry wit to bring you…what? A comedy about a vampire rock band, yes. But before you shunt this effort off into I-Hate-Vampires Land, consider this for a moment…...

The final Friday of Fantasia 2010 brought us one of the highlights of this year’s festival: director Christopher (Creep) Smith’s necromancer plague drama Black Death. Playing as the perfect accompaniment to Ken Russell’s The Devils, Black Death is a very subdued and naturalistic take on pestilence and witchcraft.
The film uses the backdrop of medieval superstition as a metaphor for modern-day religious propaganda and state sponsored fundamentalism. With influences as far ranging as In the Name of the Rose, Wicker Man, and Witchfinder General, it turned out to be a crowd pleasing and blessedly subtle take on an oft covered theme that stands out as one of the best of the sub-genre. Check out McCannibal’s Black Death review here.

Thanks to international success of “Twilight” and its copycat offspring, everyone and their creepy uncle has a supposedly “unique” take on vampires. Truth be told, I’ve already grown quite tired of this increasingly dreadful trend. E1 Entertainment, in an effort to cash in on the craze, has recently announced it will distribute director Rob Stefaniuk’s upcoming blood-sucker flick “Suck” on DVD this fall. The title, of course, kicks the door wide open for an array of interesting reviews should this thing fail to capture the interest of its core audience. Then again, how can you go wrong with a movie that stars Iggy Pop, Henry Rollins, Malcolm McDowell, and Dave Foley? Don’t answer that. If you crave specifics, partake in this synopsis: A rock’n’roll vampire spoof about a down and out band, The Winners, who will do anything for a record deal. When their disgruntled...

How long would you wait for your big break? And if you knew it would never come unless you took drastic measures like, say, becoming a vampire, would you? Do sex and drugs really make rock ‘n roll? According to Rob Stefaniuk’s tongue-in-cheek film, rock music is nothing without some kind of drug or in this case, blood, to get the audience’s attention.
Rob Stefaniuk plays Joey, songwriter and leader of a band that has been working the club circuit for too long with too little success; even their sleazy manager (played by the always effortless Dave Foley) fires himself, and the bass player (Jessica Paré) decides to become a vampire to spruce up the act. As she makes the band’s roadie clean up the bodies and converts the other band members, Joey contemplates how far he will go for success. Recruiting such musicians as Alice Cooper,...

Suck may be one of a number of independent vampire comedies to make the scene lately, but the Canadian production has a difference—it’s actually funny, as well as occasionally bloody enough to sate fans displeased with the anemic likes of the Twilight movies. The movie recently played the Museum of Modern Art as part of its Canadian Front series, where Fango got a chance to chat with its writer/director/star Rob Stefaniuk (pictured).

Proving that vampires really are the rock stars of the horror universe, Rob Stefaniuk's Suck follows a Canadian band's rise to stardom after their smokin' bassist (Jessica Pare - Hot Tub Time Machine) turns into a super hot -- and super hungry -- bloodsucker. FEARnet sat down with the vampy star herself, Jessica Paré, to talk Suck, vampires, and the real-life rock gods (Alice Cooper! Iggy Pop! Henry Rollins! …er, Moby?) whose cameos in the indie flick gave Suck that extra special bit of rock 'n' roll magic. FEARnet: How did you first get involved with Suck? Jessica Paré: Gabriella Martinelli was the executive producer; she and I worked together on a TV film...

One might walk into a "vampire musical comedy" with some degree of skepticism, and I say this because I sure as hell walked into a new flick called Suck with my pencil already sharpened. "The movie Suck ... sure does!" is what I was going to say, because I am clever. "Thanks for naming your movie Suck, fellas, because you just wrote my review for me!" (Man, what wordsmiths us film critics am!) But then the lights went down and I noticed the name Rob Stefaniuk, which I remembered because A) it's kind of a funny name, and B) I once saw a film of his at the Toronto Film Festival. It was a broad Canadian comedy called Phil the Alien, which I enjoyed well enough without exactly falling in love with it. So...

[With Rob Stefaniuk's Suck screening at SXSW now seems a good time to revisit my review from the film's world premiere in Toronto.]
Joey has a problem. His band, The Winners, is on the verge of making it big. This should be a good thing, really. After years of scratching out a meager existence in the bars, years of gigs that don't pay and nobody comes to, years of measuring the hits on their website in single digits, things are finally looking up. Fans are buzzing. Fans are coming out to their shows. Their tour is scheduled to end with a big industry showcase. Life should be great! But it's not because their new-found popularity rides on the magnetic power of Joey's ex-girlfriend and current bassist - magnetic power that arrived the day she was turned into a vampire.
With a fantastic premise, high end production values and a cast that includes appearances from the likes of Moby, Alice Cooper, Carol Pope, Alex Lifeson from Rush, Henry Rollins and Iggy Pop plus original...

Suck, which premiered at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, stars Rob Stefaniuk, Jessica Paré, Paul Anthony, Mike Lobel, Chris Ratz, Dave Foley, Henry Rollins, Iggy Pop, Alice Cooper, Carole Pope, and Alex Lifeson; and tells the story of:
Joey (Stefaniuk), the ostensible leader of the Winners, a bar band going exactly nowhere. They’re broke and feuding with one another, and the crappy gigs they’ve managed to cobble together and call a tour are being cancelled. Even their lame manager Jeff (Foley) doesn’t want anything to do with them. Things aren’t much better on the home front. Joey’s permanently enraged girlfriend feels neglected and isn’t thrilled that his ex, Jennifer (Paré), is still in the band. But their luck is about to change.
Picked up by a rather scary goth type, Jennifer shows up the next day looking, well, paler than usual. This...

A couple of years ago, we wrote about a vampire rock 'n roll musical comedy (that's really what it is) titled simply Suck that would feature appearances by Alice Cooper, Iggy Pop, Henry Rollins, and Moby, as well as other rockers. Well, jump ahead to today, and now we've got the official trailer for Suck courtesy of YouTube (via SlashFilm). That beauty with the killer vampire eyes above is Canadian actress Jessica Paré, also seen in Hot Tub Time Machine. This has played at a few film fests and is currently showing at SXSW, so its been making the rounds, and its been getting mostly positive reviews (here's one on ScreenDaily). Check it out! Watch the official trailer for Rob Stefaniuk's Suck: Suck is a rock vampire comedy about a group of musical wannabees in search of immortality and a record deal. Rock band The Winners have sunk so low,...

Attention: Twilight fans! Er, make that Shaun of the Dead fans. Actually, it's hard to tell what the target audience is for the Canadian horror-comedy Suck, but there's a good bet this independent movie will appeal to those who like a little blood with their tongue-in-cheek.
Written and directed by Rob Stefaniuk (Phil the Alien), who also stars in the movie, Suck centers on a struggling rock band that discovers that becoming vampires can help them succeed ... if they can stay ahead of vampire-hunter Eddie Van Helsing (played by Malcolm McDowell). Suck also stars Jessica Paré and Dave Foley, with cameo appearances by rockers such as Alice Cooper, Iggy Pop, and Henry Rollins.
Suck premiered at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival and will be making its U.S. debut March 17th at the South by Southwest Film Conference and Festival (SXSW) in Austin, Texas.

This trailer doesn't suck. It is all about "Suck" though. Written and directed by Rob Stefaniuk, the Canadian horror-comedy follows members of a struggling rock band who inadvertently discover the secret to success: becoming vampires. The trailer promises hilarity, particularly the sight of an eyepatch-wearing, crossbow-wielding Malcolm McDowell. The supporting cast is tremendous too, with cameos from rockers Alice Cooper, Iggy Pop, Henry Rollins, Moby and Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson! You also get Kid in the Hall Dave Foley. And vampire comedy. What's not to love?
The movie premiered in September 2009 at the Toronto International Film Festival. You'll be able to catch it next this month in Austin at a South By Southwest midnight screening on March 17. There will be two additional screenings in New York City, at the Museum of Modern Art on Friday, March 19 at 7:15pm and Monday, March 22 at 7pm. For now, check out the trailer...

Suck is a rockumentary in the similar vein as Spinal Tap as characters dumbfoundedly get involved in some sticky situations. The stickiness here is blood. Cameras follow the members of a touring rock band who choose vampiricism to heighten flagging music sales. An off the wall premise is taken into hilarious realms with help from sketch comedian and actor David Foley. Others in the cast and on camera include Malcolm McDowell, Iggy Pop, Alice Cooper and many others. Watch the puns fly in this second trailer for Suck below.
The synopsis for Suck:

When their disgruntled manager (Dave Foley) tells them that they are getting “long in the tooth”, he doesn’t know that his words are truly prophetic. Another flick playing at this weekend's South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas is Rob Stefaniuk's new vampire comedy Suck. As a means to get you all ready for the fang-laden fun, a new festival trailer made its debut online; and we have it for you all juicy!
Synopsis
Seemingly doomed to road trip doldrums and dives, the band The Winners break their slump when their female bass player disappears one night with a studly, stylin’ vampire. She returns charged with sexual charisma that creates audience frenzy and eventually ensnares the rest of the band. Their “hook” launches them to fame. But fame turns out to be a different kind of Hell than AC/DC promised.
Following an “incident” on a national radio show with “Rockn’ Roger”, The Winners hit mega-stardom beyond their wildest dreams. But Joey is haunted by an eerie bartender with a dark secret. And...

We know. Vampires are overdone, Twilight ruined vampires, blah blah blah. But what if someone decided to take a little bit different angle at the blood-sucker genre? That's exactly what filmmaker and actor Rob Stefaniuk is attempting to do with Suck, the story of a rock band who will do anything to become famous. Oh, and there's vampires. Comedies in the vampire genre have worked before, as recently as last year with Lesbian Vampire Killers, so what's to say that this film, which appears to not take itself too seriously, won't be a hilarious spoof of the current state of vampirism? Suck has been chilling on the edge of the Hollywood radar for about a year and a half, and finally is ready to burst onto the scene. Boasting a few unrecognizable leads, Stefaniuk surrounds his cast with infinitely noteworthy support from both the world of music and film. Henry...

One of the films I regret missing at the 2009 Toronto International Film Festival is a campire rock musical titled Suck. Rob Stefaniuk's Canadian independent rock comedy tells the story of "a rock 'n' roll band that will do anything to become famous." In a post-Twilight age, it is easy to write off any young vampire movie as just another one of those tween flicks, but this looks different. And early reviews coming out of the festival were very positive. Watch the trailer now, embedded after the jump. And as always, please leave your thoughts in the comments below. Here is some more information from Tiff's official guide: Joey (Rob Stefaniuk) is the ostensible leader of the Winners, a bar band going exactly nowhere. Feast your eyes on this baby! It's loud and a little amusing though not nearly as funny as the film. Still, a solid look at one of my favourites from the latter part of last year's festival circuits!
Trailer after the break.

Hopping around the festival circuit with no official release date in site, Suck is making its South by Southwest premiere soon and a new trailer has hit the web. We've seen a few teasers before in the former of clips and a pretty f'in silly music video, but here's a proper preview to give you an idea of what the film is like. And it still looks...silly. Writer-director Rob Stefaniuk shot Suck in the Toronto area with Malcolm McDowell, Jessica Paré, Dave Foley, Iggy Pop, Moby, Alice Cooper and Carol Pope.

New York's Museum of Modern Arts (MoMA), in association with Telefilm Canada, will organize the seventh annual Canadian Front. This event will be held from March 17 to March 24, 2010. Moreover, New Yorkers will have the chance to see nine Canadian films.
Obviously, this event should help Canadian films to find a U.S. distributor and allow New Yorkers to see Canadian films that were completed over the last 18 months. As a matter of fact, it was the Canadian Front event that allowed Bruce McDonald's brilliant zombie film Pontypool to be distributed in the USA by IFC Films for instance.
This year, the Canadian Front has in store two comedies, two dramas, two coming-of-age stories, two documentaries and an old classic. Speaking about that classic, the film in question was directed by Allan King, a Canadian director who left us in June 2009 and whose work was the subject of a MoMA retrospective in 2007. So,...

Toronto -- Billed as a keynote address, Lewis Black will more likely deliver one of his trademark acerbic rants at the upcoming Just for Laughs comedy conference on July 15, while Andy Kindler ("The Late Show With David Letterman") will return to Montreal to roast comic royalty with his perennial "State of the Industry" address.
The three-day comedy conference will also see the return of the TV comedy pitch event "Pitch 'Til Your Sides Split," and a first-time comedy boot camp for film, where selected writer/producer teams pitch feature comedies to a panel of experts before possibly applying to the 2010 Telefilm Canada features comedy lab at the Canadian Film Center in Toronto.

Other “festival favorites” include Waking Sleeping Beauty, a behind-the-scenes documentary about Disney animation from 1984 to 1994 directed by Beauty and the Beast producer Don Hahn, and Tony, a Slamdance selection and psychological thriller about a serial killer.
Skateland, starring Ashley Green, is also getting another look from festival goers, as well as the raved-about short film from Spike Jonze titled I’m Here. Plus a Doors documentary narrated by Johnny Depp. I’ll be reviewing and covering as many of these films as I can.

Some of the most fun I had in a theatre last year came late in the year while at the Whistler film festival. The film screening that night to a full house was none other than Rob Stefaniuk's vampire musical comedy mash-up Suck (review). Admittedly, everyone there had an idea that they were in for something a little off the wall but it's doubtful anyone expected Stefaniuk's newest film to be fabulous.
The director whose Phil the Alien brought him some attention for its wacky, off the wall craziness, goes above and beyond with this mix of animation, cheesiness and catchy music. The film stars Stefaniuk as Joey, the leader of a mediocre band with a super hot bassist names Jennifer played by the (stretch a little people) super hot Jessica Paré. The first time I heard the name Rob Stefaniuk was in conjunction with Phil the Alien, a little Canadian film which was described as “seriously bent.” Anyone familiar with that project may think they know what to expect with Stefaniuk’s directorial follow-up and though they may be prepared for the zaniness, they’re probably not ready for the sheer awesomeness of Suck.
