Earlier this year, people started noticing something peculiar about MTV’s schedule: The network had quietly morphed into an almost 24/7 offering of just one show. At one point in late June, “Ridiculousness” — a half-hour viral video-clip show hosted by famed skateboarder Rob Dyrdek — aired for 113 hours out of the network’s entire 168-hour lineup. Many took it as a sign that MTV, a pioneering force in reality television that only a few years ago had also made major investments in original scripted programming, had just given up.

If anyone has noticed a different attitude from Syfy over the past year, it's probably Bill McGoldrick they would have to thank. McGoldrick, who took over the original content duties from Mark Stern last year, knows that the face of television has changed with the likes of "Game of Thrones" on HBO, "Breaking Bad" on AMC and "Fargo" on FX. And because television is changing and evolving, so is Syfy. "This year and next year is going to be Syfy at its finest," cable channel President Dave Howe told reporters at Monday's Syfy Digital Press Tour in Orlando. "We have big, bold ambitious scripted series at the level of 'Battlestar Galactica' and the miniseries events, and the plethora of announcements that have been going on the last six months thanks to Bill and his team has been incredible." The shake-up at Syfy continues. Senior vp alternative programming Tim Krubsack is exiting the NBCUniversal-owned cable network, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. The executive, who was promoted in July 2010, was responsible for overseeing development of Syfy's unscripted reality programming, including Face Off and Ghost Hunters. Krubsack's departure comes three months after Bill McGoldrick was installed to replace Mark Stern as exec vp original content. For his part, Stern — after an 11-year run at the top of Syfy's originals department — will become an Ep for a new Syfy series set to bow this year. Syfy in November also continued its reorganization; Syfy Films senior vp Gregory Noveck and director of development Joshua Banta exited the company.

The reorganization at NBC Universal continues. Two weeks after Bill McGoldrick replaced Mark Stern as head of programming at NBCU's Syfy television arm, the film section -- a joint venture between Syfy and Universal -- is getting a shake-up. Gregory Noveck, senior vp at Syfy Films, as well as director of development, Joshua Banta, are leaving as parent NBCU refocuses its plan for the division. Syfy and Universal spokespersons tell The Hollywood Reporter that the exact plans are not clear. They declined further comment. We’ve been telling you about Syfy‘s new series Helix since it was picked up straight to series back in March. We knew it was something about a disease in a lab in the arctic, but not much else. Since then we’ve seen a synopsis and a trailer (reprinted below if you need a refresher), but questions remain.
I learned a lot more about the show when I visited the Montreal set last month; you can see some of those photos here. It was there that then-Syfy President of Original programming Mark Stern called Helix a “very serialized” show, and there that I met the creator of Helix, former economist Cameron Porsandeh (on the left with cast).
While in Montreal I also learned from a Syfy exec that this is the show to watch for those of us who love good, meaty, smart, challenging science fiction. “Very” serialized,...

Mark Stern, the man primarily responsible for bringing fandom shows like "Battlestar Galactica," "Defiance" and "Warehouse 13," is leaving his role as head of original programming at the cable channel to become a producer for one of its new series. Although the decision to move Stern is a bit of a surprise, the cable division of NBC Universal has been in a bit of a turmoil in recent months as new owner Comcast has made several major executive managerial changes. Syfy, however, seemed to be immune to all of that, staying out of the fray. Until this week. Stern will be replaced by Bill McGoldrick, who up until now, was doing the same job for sister cable channel USA Network. He was replaced there by Jackie de Crinis. At USA, McGoldrick had his own success record, including shows ...

Cool, original, and push-the-genre is just how we like our science fiction, so Mark Stern's recent words at this weekend's Sdcc are like John Williams music to our alien robot ears. His most recently announced project - a TV adaptation of Terry Gilliam's 1995 12 Monkeys - promises to tick at least two of those boxes (and potentially a third depending on your view on what makes something original).
Syfy's rebooted Battlestar Galactica is very much the template for this new project, which is currently being planned to start with a ninety-minute pilot before talk of a full season order. Producers of the original film,...

Terry Gilliam's 1995 feature 12 Monkeys is a favorite amongst genre fans and the Syfy Channel is looking to capitalize on its popularity by bringing all the action to the small screen... sans Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt of course.
According to THR the cable network which previewed Ron Moore’s “Helix” at Comic-Con, is adapting Gilliam’s flick. The movie starred Bruce Willis as James Cole, a convicted criminal in a post-apocalyptic future where the Earth’s population is forced to live underground after a deadly virus. In a bid to earn a pardon, Cole will use an imperfect science of time travel to help collect information on the virus released by the Army of the Twelve Monkeys.

One of Syfy’s big announcements earlier this year was that Jamie Foxx would write and direct a limited horror anthology series for them, with an airdate set for this October. It’s now being reported that the project has been delayed. Deadline says that the series has been postponed for scheduling reasons and a new target air date has not been given.
One possible reason for this is that Jamie Foxx has been busy with promoting White House Down and he’s supposed to meet with Syfy to discuss the project in more detail next month. The report doesn’t make it sound like the project moving forward is set in stone and we’ll let readers know when any updates are available. Here’s the original anthology announcement:

This Is Just Crazy. There must be more to the story, but we wanted to let you know as soon as possible. I’ve been on conference calls with all of the main cast members plus the showrunner in recent weeks and none of them indicated an interest in finishing off the show. I hate to look a gift horse in the mouth, but I'm fully going to get all up in this gift horse's grill. And gay lady viewers have been smitten with H.G. and Myka's relationship from the very beginning.
