The Masters of the Universe toy and cartoon franchise got a live-action film adaptation back in 1987, with Dolph Lundgren taking on the role of lead hero He-Man, who defends the planet Eternia (and the rest of the universe) from evil forces, usually headed up by the villain Skeletor. To cut costs, the majority of the film is set on 1980s Earth, with He-Man and various other characters being transported from Eternia to Earth with the use of a “Cosmic Key.” Another live-action film adaptation of Masters of the Universe has been in development hell for a long time, but it looks like might finally escape into production, as Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel Studios have announced that the movie will be receiving a theatrical release on June 5, 2026. Technically, summer in the northern hemisphere won’t begin until June 21st in 2026, but this is considered a summer release because summer starts early in the movie industry.

The Kung Fu Panda franchise is awaiting the release of its fourth film, which has come a long way from its concept of an anthropomorphic animal learning kung fu. Starring Jack Black as Po, Kung Fu Panda 4 sees many familiar characters such as Master Shifu, Tai Lung, and Kai, while introducing new villains such as The Chameleon.
The first film was known for its bizarre concept of a Panda learning kung fu and was one of the most anticipated films of 2008. The film was one of the commercially successful films by DreamWorks Animation, earning over $631 million. While a simplistic comedy with action, the concept of Kung Fu Panda was reportedly inspired by the iconic film Kung Fu Hustle.

Just to prove how easy it is.
On Wednesday, The Hollywood Reporter released its 2016 Animation Roundtable to the world. That, in itself, isn’t particularly newsworthy (aside from the fact that animation is awesome, of course) but…well, here, have a look for yourself:
First, the picture: Why, yes, that is a panel consisting of all white men. It’s not the first time this has happened and it infuriatingly won’t be the last (but at least this Tumblr account and also this one will always have fresh content).
Second, the headline: “Seth Rogen and 6 More on Avoiding Ethnic Stereotypes and How to ‘Break the Mold’ of Princesses.” We can’t think of anyone more qualified to speak to ethnic stereotypes and breaking the mold of princesses than a group of white men. Totally.
There’s absolutely zero excuse for this: if you’ve somehow ended up with an all male and/or all white panel...

Miles Teller, king of movie bro-dom, now has something in common with cartoon character Arthur: He too will soon be an aardvark. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Whiplash and War Dogs actor has been tapped to voice the lead role of Gilbert in The Ark And The Aardvark from Kung Fu Panda director John Stevenson. “The Ark” of the title is indeed Noah’s, but this spin on the biblical tale doesn’t sound particularly heavy and/or religious. So, no, this is not a rehash of what Darren Arnofosky put us through a couple years ago. The movie focuses on Teller’s character, a nocturnal mammal “who leads a group of misfit animals though natural disasters and personal anxieties.” Stevenson said in a statement via THR that Gilbert is “young, spirited, sarcastic,” all descriptors that could be applied to any number of Teller performances.

Remember when the Masters of the Universe movie was out of developmental purgatory and moving forward? Warner Bros. selected John Stevenson (Kung Fu Panda) to direct the film. Unfortunately it never happened. But come on, this thing is inevitable right? Frankly I’d love to see Dolph Lundgren come back but we know that’s not possible. It’s now been a full four years since the release of whimsical animation Gnomeo and Juliet, and just as we were beginning to question whether the sequel was in trouble or not, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Black Mass star Johnny Depp has landed the title role in Sherlock Gnomes.

The Bible is getting animated. Noah's Ark will tell the Musical story of the animals who are saved by a giant flood from the point of view of a meerkat. Yes, it's a musical, which sounds weird until you realize The Lion King is a musical. In fact, a guy who has written his share of animated musicals Philip Lazebnik, is writing this story as well - he also wrote Mulan, Pocahontas and The Prince of Egypt (which was about Moses). Sharing the director's chair (which is common in animated movies) are John Stevenson, the director of Kung Fu Panda, and Cameron Hood, who was an animator on Prince of Egypt as well as Kung Fu Panda 2 and How to Train Your Dragon.

Have I got some thrilling news for you! Gnomeo & Juliet, Disney’s lawn-set adventure about two star-crossed ceramic gnomes, is getting its sequel. The original film drew its inspiration — and pun-ny title — from William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet, but unlike that tragic tale, these warring Montagues and Capulets put aside their difference without any bloodshed… though there were some injuries that required hefty amounts of superglue.
Earlier this year, details about the sequel emerged revealing that its title Gnomeo & Juliet: Sherlock Gnomes refers to a new figure in the world of lawn gnomes, sassy frog-nannies and plastic flamingos, who is tasked with solving the mystery of the garden’s missing ornaments/residents.
Elton John is back as producer and set to contribute original music for the production; screenwriters Andy Riley and Kevin Cecil are returning also, but rather than bringing back Gnomeo & Juliet director Kelly Asbury, Kung Fu Panda co-director...

Sherlock Gnomes, the sequel to Elton John's animated musical Gnomeo & Juliet, will be directed by Kung Fu Panda helmer John Stevenson. The lawn decorations from the first film will be joined by the famous sleuth, who in this case, is also a garden gnome. Gnomes is trying to find out why the citizens of the English garden are disappearing but, perhaps it's the plaster in his brain, Gnomes isn't as bright as his human counterpart. The writers from the first outing, Andy Riley and Kevin Cecil, are writing the follow up and Elton John is writing new music for the pic. John's Rocket Pictures is producing and, assumably, Disney will again distribute under its label.
Stevenson is currently working on Alien Rock Band about an intergalactic battle of the bands.
Gnomeo & Juliet grossed $194 million at the box office.

In lit class we learn that Romeo and Juliet die. If that's a spoiler you live under a rock or you avoided the Leonardo DiCaprio acid trip Romeo + Juliet. In Gnomeo and Juliet kids learn that they live happily ever after. Now they're going to learn that Sherlock Holmes is a lawn gnome who helps solve neighborhood mysteries. Voila! I just told you about a sequel.

When your movie turns a profit, nobody actually having a recollection of it doesn’t make much difference. I can only assume this is one of the driving philosophies behind Sherlock Gnomes, a sequel to last year’s Elton John-infused animated picture Gnomeo & Juliet that, according to Deadline, John Stevenson (Kung Fu Panda) will now be directing.
As should be clear from the oh-my-Lord-are-you-really-going-with-that title, the project — which Andy Riley and Kevin Cecil, Gnomeo‘s writers, are returning for — sees the original movie’s characters seeking the help of a world famous detective (guess his name) to solve “the sinister disappearance of gnomes from the suburban gardens of England.” So, does that make this our first-ever mixing of William Shakespeare and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle? And does it really have to be this?

Back in March, Elton John’s Rocket Pictures, which spearheaded the original movie’s development, announced that successful ‘toon Gnomeo & Juliet would be getting a sequel called Sherlock Gnomes. Now it has a director, with Kung Fu Panda man John Stevenson on board.Andy Riley and Kevin Cecil are back once more for the new adventure, which focuses on the main characters from the first film (so hopefully James McAvoy and Emily Blunt will return to the voice booth) enlisting the aid of a master gnome detective to discover why some ornaments are vanishing from the gardens of England.“John has the perfect sensibility for this movie, together with the vision to build on the first film to create a distinctive, fresh and action-packed adventure,” said Rocket boss Steve Hamilton Shaw in a statement picked up by Deadline.Stevenson’s not a shocking choice, since the first movie’s director...

After grossing almost $95 million on the 3D revamp of The Lion King, director Roger Allers is back to original projects. Deadline reports that the director’s been tapped to adapt and direct the animated feature The Prophet for Salma Hayek‘s Ventanarosa Productions, which will be produced by Clark Peterson and Senkowski.
The feature is based on the classic book by Lebanese writer, philosopher, and artist Khalil Gibran, one which has sold over 100 million copies to date. Allers isn’t the only director lending his talents — other filmmakers have either signed on or are in discussions to helm specific segments of the film. Allers will direct the opening, closing and frame parts of the feature alongside Tomm Moore (The Secret of Kells), Sylvain Chomet (The Triplets of Belleville), John Stevenson (Kung Fu Panda), Marjane Satrapi (Persepolis), Chris Landreth (Ryan), Nina Paley (Sita Sings the Blues), Bill Plympton (Guard Dog and...

According to Sony Vice President DeVon Franklin, Columbia Pictures is still working on getting a new live-action film based on the popular cartoon and toyline character to theaters. He-Man is a fictional, heroic character featured in the Masters of the Universe cartoon, comic book and action figure franchise. In most variations he is the alter ego of Prince Adam of Eternia and the twin brother of She-r (who went off to have her own popular franchise). He-Man and his friends, including Man-At-Arms and his BattleCat Cringer defend their homeland and the secrets of Castle Grayskull from their enemy Skeletor and his minions. Several years ago Joel Silver was attached to produce the film at Warner Bros while Kung Fu Panda director John Stevenson had signed on to helm the project. Since then,...

Producing animation sequels is precarious. Every factor in these additions tend to fall short: the visual effects, the plot, the reception, etc. Dreamworks Animation-produced CG franchises are especially dubious because of the company’s mediocrity (How many Shrek sequels have they produced?). Fortunately, Kung Fu Panda (from Mark Osborne and John Stevenson) is one of their dazzling gems. Its sequel, Kung Fu Panda 2 (directed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson), though not as good as the original, is a totally indulgent film, in the best way possible.
Po, the Dragon Warrior (Jack Black), again struggles with his identity in this film. Teaming up with the Furious Five (returning cast including Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan, Seth Rogen, Lucy Liu, and David Cross) again, they try to save China from the new antagonist, Lord Shen (Gary Oldman), a menacing peacock who cannot let go of his past. Kung Fu Panda 2
Directed by: Jennifer Yuh
Starring: Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan
Rating: PG
Release Date: May 26, 2011
Trailer Score: 8/10
Thoughts by Tsr:It’s a rarity that I get this excited about an animated sequel. in fact, I feel like it’s safe to say that I rarely ever see animated sequels. What’s refreshing about Kung Fu Panda 2 is that it’s very much aware of the movie that came before it.
Rather than cash in on that previous movie’s success, it looks like it actually builds off of it. What’s that? Character development in an animated movie? believe me, I was as shocked as you, but I think it might be one of the few examples. I was surprised that directors Mark Osborne and John Stevenson didn’t return for this second installment, but what is their loss seems to be Jennifer Yuh’s gain.

This was a piece of last week's news that we're getting to late - but is worth highlighting. It’s been reprinted 163 times, sold over 100 million copies and translated into over 40 different languages, so it comes as no surprise that, in an era of Hollywood producers scraping the bottom of the barrel for new ideas, a hugely popular book like Khalil Gibran’s masterpiece The Prophet will be adapted for the big screen. Deadline is reporting that Salma Hayek, operating under her Ventanarosa Productions banner, has partnered with Clark Peterson and Ron Senkowski to produce an animated feature based on the book of 26 poetic essays. Hayek’s producing partner, Jose Tamez, will executive produce along with William Nix and co-financing from Steve Hanson. As each essay deals with such differing topics as joy to death and religion to beauty, The Prophet will get produced along the same lines as Fantasia and Paris,...

Salma Hayek and her Ventanarosa Productions have teamed up with Clark Peterson and Ron Senkowski to produce an animated feature based on Gibran’s beloved book.
According to the latest reports, the intention is for different directors to helm each chapter, with “an interconnecting theme and a musical through-line.”

He’s back and, of course, it was inevitable he would be. In a market in which the very few rare and successful original films are taken and flogged to within an inch of their lives by the Hollywood machine, there was simply no way that there was not going to be a sequel to Dreamworks’ all-conquering anthropomorphic martial arts flick, Kung Fu Panda. With a large all-star cast, the film has, since 2008, made back six times its own outlay, and its witty dialogue and endearing characterisation made it a hit with critics, parents and children.
Speaking at a recent corporate forum, producer Melissa Cobb gave an indication of the sort of themes the public can expect from the next instalment in the franchise:
“The movie deals with pretty tough, emotional issues that he goes through, as well as a huge adventure. This movie is on a much bigger scale then the first movie.

While it sounds like we don't have to worry about a Wizard of Oz remake anytime soon, that doesn't mean other filmmakers aren't interested in journeying to the great land of Oz with some different stories. We know Sam Raimi is set to direct Robert Downey Jr. in Oz: The Great and Powerful, and it looks like another director is ready to go down the yellow brick road. Variety reports Mike Johnson, who co-directed The Corpse Bride with Tim Burton, will direct the CG/stop-motion animated film Oz Wars for Vanguard Films. The story sees Dorothy caught in a whirlwind of warrior witches, black magic, martial arts and monsters with a contemporary touch. Vanguard Films is making a big push to for new talent and content recently as the company recently landed Kung Fu Panda co-director John Stevenson to a production deal which includes the feature Alien Rock Band. As an animation studio that always seems to be a bit behind the curve, Vanguard Films (the company behind Valiant and Space Chimps) is looking to capture some magic by nabbing Kung Fu Panda co-director John Stevenson for an overall producing/directing deal. The animation company announced the news in a press release earlier this week including a couple projects that Stevenson will helm. The first will have the director starting an Alien Rock Band complete with collaboration from David A. Stewart, the famed musician and producer from the Eurythmics. Find out about all the details on this wacky, intergalactic rock fest below! The film will follow a garage band from Earth traveling across the Universe to qualify for a shot at super-stardom in an Intergalactic Battle of the Bands. It won't be easy – the band will have to out-shred four-armed alien guitarists, face-down tentacled, punker octo-drummers, and fight ...

It looks like John Stevenson will not be working with DreamWorks again for a long time, if at all. Today Stevenson announced the upcoming projects that he is working on with Vanguard Films.
John Stevenson has signed a producing/directing pact with Vanguard Films, and has begun work on directing Alien Rock Band for Vanguard. Rock Band is a mix of live-action and CGI that follows a garage band from Earth that journeys across the Universe for a chance to quality for the Intergalactic Battle of the Bands.
Vanguard Films has directed such duds as Valiant, Happily N’Ever After, Space Chimps and Space Chimps 2: Zartog Strikes Back. Hopefully bringing the likes of Stevenson on board to produce and direct will be a step into financial and critical success.
A new strategy has been put into place to prepare for the upcoming films according to a press release.
