In Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things,” 19th-century scientist Baxter (Willem Dafoe) restores Bella (Emma Stone) to life with the brain of her unborn child — and the surreal visual design reflects her wild imagination as she progresses from infant to liberated woman.
To achieve that, the director instructed production designers James Price (“Paddington 2” art director) and Shona Heath (a collaborator of fashion photographer Tim Walker making her film debut) to create a fantastical world that was a throwback to the old-school style of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s “Black Narcissus,” with miniatures, painted backdrops, and rear screen projection (high-tech LED screens created the oceans and skies).
“My experience in film is zero,” Heath said in an on-set interview in the video above, “so this wouldn’t be standing if it wasn’t for James.”

Actor John Wayne starred in Western and war movies that filled his filmography. However, he didn’t initially get his start in front of the camera. First, Wayne worked at Fox in the props department on several films before getting his first leading role in Raoul Walsh’s 1930 Western adventure called The Big Trail. Here are the eight movies Wayne worked on in the props department before he was famous.

“The Batman” has added another high-profile player to its impressive cast. Director Matt Reeves announced via Twitter today that John Turturro will star in the upcoming superhero tentpole as Mafia capo Carmine Falcone. See the tweet below.
Nicknamed The Roman, Falcone is an enemy of Batman but a friend to the Wayne family, with command over Gotham City’s underground, organized crime syndicate. In the TV series “Gotham,” Falcone was played by John Doman, and in “Batman Begins,” he was played by Tom Wilkinson.
This is the first foray into the DC world for John Turturro, iconic as bowling legend Jesus Quintana in “The Big Lebowski,” as disheveled lawyer John Stone in the HBO miniseries “The Night Of” (which earned him an Emmy nomination), and a Cannes Film Festival Best Actor winner for the Coen Brothers’ “Barton Fink.”

Two years ago, there was a fierce online debate over the cast of a future movie about the 2016 Republican presidential race, which would probably be called Clown Car! (although Every Which Way But Left and A Kochwork Orange were also strong suggestions).
Twitter users attacked difficult questions like, “Could veteran character actor Daniel Von Bargen of Seinfeld fame play George Pataki despite being dead?” and “Was Justin Timberlake training for the role of Rand Paul in his portrayal of dry-humping weenie Scott Delacorte in Bad Teacher?”

“Big Little Lies” isn’t the only HBO limited series fielding demands for more seasons. “The Night Of” set the TV landscape on fire when it debuted in the summer of 2016, and people are still hot to see more nearly a year later.
Speaking at an Emmy For Your Consideration event in North Hollywood on Thursday night, co-creator Steven Zaillian, joined by stars Riz Ahmed and John Turturro, was asked whether or not Season 2 was a possibility.
“My client pleads the fifth,” joked Turturro, who played defense attorney John Stone on “The Night Of.”
“Listen, we would love to do it,” Zaillian said. “And when I say ‘we,’ I mean [co-creator] Richard Price and myself. If we can come up with something that we fall in love with, we’ll do it. If we don’t, we won’t.”
