The fourth episode of "X-Men '97" is, in fact, two episodes crammed into one. The first half, called "Motendo," is about Jubille (Holly Chou) being teleported into Mojoworld where she is forced to fight inside a violent video game at the behest of a TV goblin named Mojo. The second half, called "Lifedeath, Part 1," follows Storm (Alison Sealy-Smith) after she lost her weather-controlling superpowers in the previous episode. It was quite a blow for Storm who was essentially a goddess. Now a mere mortal with no mastery of the elements, Storm is approached by a character named Forge (Gil Birmingham) with a proposal that they team up for an unspecified mission.
Forge had previously appeared in "X-Men: The Animated Series" (voiced by Marc Strange) as the leader of X-Factor, a separate team of super-mutants. Forge has the uncanny ability to intuit machines just by handling them, making him the world's greatest mechanic.

Official Synopsis: What A Long, Strange Trip It’S Been…Marc’s past, present and future collide! An epic throwdown between Marc Spector and Khonshu! Who will survive, and what will be left of them?
Looking at Marvel for the last few years its odd that Moonknight has had a larger assortment of quality runs than some of the biggest characters. Perhaps editors give writers more freedom with a character like Moonknight, or maybe its the lack of pressure fans put on teams that are on bigger legacy characters like the X-Men or Spider-Man. Whatever the reason Jeff Lemire’s most recent run may go down as one of the best for the character.
For those that have been following along Lemire has gone head first into the broken psyche of Marc Spector. Giving us a story that...

For the longest time, studios have lived by the mantra that R-rated films, by and large, cannot possibly compete at the box office with their PG-13 counterparts, and it’s a mentality that is understandable. By giving a film an R rating, you’re limiting the number of folks who would take the trek out to the theaters to see the film, namely teenagers, who tend to a big demographic for these kinds of movies.
Last year, Deadpool proved that an R-rated film can be competitive in the superhero film genre, and so effective it was that it actually ended up outgrossing every single X-Men film to date — all of which are rated PG-13. This terrific performance undoubtedly gave the studio 20th Century Fox the confidence to move forward with an R-rated Wolverine film — something fans have been wanting ever since the character was introduced on the big screen. It’s been a few months since Doctor Strange first entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and despite his psychedelic tendencies, he seemed to fit in very well. In many ways, he seemed to be a natural merger between the more grounded world we see in Iron Man and the more outlandish Thor. Of course, you can’t have a story about the Infinity Gauntlet without Doctor Strange, so it goes without saying that actor Benedict Cumberbatch will be involved in its production (though he’s long since been confirmed).
However, last January, there was a report from the outlet Page Six that a stand-in was in Georgia filming in place of Cumberbatch himself while the British actor was off playing Thomas Edison in The Current War. The report stated that Marvel Studios did not plan on digitally superimposing Cumberbatch onto another actor’s performance, but that seemed to imply we...

Scott Derrickson has been using his newly-elevated profile to sound off on all kinds of things lately. If you follow the director on social media, you've likely seen that he's relishing the added exposure awarded to him thanks to his work on Marvel's Doctor Strange. One interesting topic he was recently asked to give his two cents on was which character(s) he'd most like to see enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
As you likely know, if you're at a site like Lrm, before there was a Marvel Studios, Marvel Comics used to pimp out there characters to different studios in order to get movies made. Sony gobbled up the film rights to Spider-Man, Universal had the rights to The Incredible Hulk, and Fox grabbed the X-Men rights, for example. Then, once Marvel Studios was founded and wanted to start making its own Cinematic Universe that included all of its beloved characters,...

Being the president of Marvel Studios is not an easy job. Kevin Feige has made it look easy. Much like in business, or sports, or life, it all starts at the top. First it starts with a vision. Then a plan. Then creating those ideas. And then repeating. Feige has been the master of that in Hollywood.
Since taking over Marvel Studios in 2009 his films have grossed over $10 billion dollars worldwide. That’s over 14 films and counting. Much like Bill Belichick from the New England Patriots, Feige took over a Marvel brand that had been littered with box office disappointments. Then Feige found his Tom Brady in Robert Downey Jr. This would be his centerpiece and the standard for Marvel films for years to come.
Like Belichick, it’s important to play great defense as well. He knows DC Films is trying to beat him in the Super Bowl. What does he do?...

A new report from The Hollywood Reporter claims "the reset button has been pressed" by Fox on the X-Men movie franchise. But what if instead of rebooting their film universe, they joined Marvel Studios instead? I think Doctor Strange might have just given them their best opportunity. THR's report says in part: [X-Men:] Apocalypse, directed by Bryan Singer, earned $544 million worldwide, a sharp drop from the $748 million made by previous entry X-Men: Days of Future Past. What's more, stars Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy and Nicholas Hoult have come to the end of their three-picture contracts. If new studio chairman Stacey Snider wants them to return, they won't come cheap. "You're gauged by the success of the franchise," says box-office analyst Paul Degarabedian. "This one didn't engender the love of previous movies. It's time to go back to the drawing board." They mention producer Simon Kinberg is working on a...

1. Doctor Strange Has Lots Of “Magic Hero” Predecessors Let’s go back over a 100 years, when magicians where a popular part of live entertainment. Many real-life stage performers like Houdini and Blackstone branched out into the printed page, starring in fictional exploits via booklets called “penny dreadfuls” which became the lurid pulp novels. The best thing besides watching new movies is knowing there will be endless Halloween costume ideas by the time October 31st hits, and 2016 is no exception. It was a year jam packed with blockbusters that included characters that are perfect to dress up as on Halloween.
Although the goal for Halloween is to have the most unique and creative costume, the movies released this year gave us so many amazing costume ideas and we know a lot of you are going to be seeing a bunch of copycats.
Not saying we are psychic, but we have a good hunch of what the most popular Halloween costumes will be this year.

Spoilers, inevitably: why the ending of Marvel's latest, Doctor Strange, feels just a little different.
This article contains big, stonking, massive spoilers for Doctor Strange.
In the run up the release of Marvel Studios' 14th film, Doctor Strange, much has been made about how this one feels like a bit of a gamble. After all, Doctor Strange isn't your average - whatever that is - Marvel hero. There’s no huge in-built audience here, outside of those following the Marvel cinematic universe religiously. Furthermore, Strange isn't someone who puts on a suit, he's someone who relies on magic, the metaphysical world, and the kind of powers that we've only seen glimpses of in the Marvel cinematic universe to date.
And, to a degree, the film lives up to that risky billing. There's a horror-ish undercurrent to the movie. There's a lesser reliance on zingers to bring...

This Friday, Netflix debuts the new show from Marvel, Luke Cage. With that, I wanted to check out the origin of the character. He’d always been someone who fascinated me but his origins were always clouded in a bit of a mystery. He wasn’t exactly a character on the level of Spider-Man that would constantly get the origin story retold.
We can thank the creation of Luke Cage on a little phenomenon called Blaxploitation films. Take a movie like Shaft. It showed Hollywood that one, there was a market for films directed at African American audiences and two, it was one of the first times we had African Americans of any sort starring in films where they were the strong, dominant leads.
One thing I wasn’t aware of was that the character of Luke Cage started off with a different name. He was originally Carl Lucas. Carl...

This Friday, Ransom Rigg’s novel “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” is making its way to the big screen thanks to Tim Burton. The fantasy/adventure film follows a young boy, Jake (Asa Butterfield), who uncovers a secret refuge after discovering clues to a mystery that spans different worlds and times. As he learns about the residents and their unusual abilities, he realizes that safety is an illusion, and danger lurks in the form of powerful, hidden enemies. The first reviews are in, here’s what critics are saying.
IndieWire’s David Ehrlich gave the film a C- and stated:
“This may not be the worst of Tim Burton’s recent movies, but it’s certainly the most disappointing. Thank God for Eva Green… ‘Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children’ argues that the world is full of wonder and magic that would fill us with purpose if only we could see it.

“Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” is a movie intended to challenge the idea that everything has already been discovered, that the world has been completely strip-mined of its wonder. If the message comes across as canned and unconvincing, perhaps that’s because director Tim Burton has spent a large part of the last 15 years ghoulishly repackaging some of the most exhausted stories in Western culture — at this point, his involvement in this project is like John Lasseter making a film that lamented the decline of hand-drawn animation, or Zack Snyder making a film that lamented the loss of quality blockbuster entertainment.

With Run The Series, The A.V. Club examines film franchises, studying how they change and evolve with each new installment.
Horror franchises come in two varieties: those based on existing properties (typically novels) and original creations (even if they’re not all that original in and of themselves). One that falls into the former category is the series that sprung from Gary Brandner’s The Howling, published in 1977 and billed as “A blood-chilling novel in the shocking tradition of Salem’s Lot” and “a terrifying tale of the occult” on the cover of its first paperback edition. Strange to think that a property that has become synonymous with werewolves, spawning eight movies in 35 years, was coy about their existence at the outset. But this was not the case when Brandner’s bestial creatures made the leap to the silver screen in 1981.

Totally Awesome Hulk #6
Story: Greg Pak Art: Mike Choi Colors: Andrew Crossley
Review: Greg Pak turns in another fun chapter in the “Chulks” life, as Amadeus experiences the fun “misunderstanding/fight/team up against villain” encounter with Thor. Last issue Hulk was brainwashed into doing something pretty bad for Enchantress and now he must make things right. The story loosely ties into the struggles Thor is going through in her own book at the moment with Malekith nicely, and I enjoyed the continuity there. Mike Choi continues to deliver some absolutely spectacular art and really is a stand out to keep an eye on, along with the beautiful colors by Andrew Crossley. The series continues to be entertaining and nice departure from the old “Hulk Smash” story lines.

Hot dispatch from the rumor mill - we were contacted by a source close to Doctor Strange with a character name for Mad Mikkelsen's character. I was hoping that it would be “Kaecilius,” because that is what I had been telling all of you for awhile and - Boom - that was the name that we got.
Who knows how on we were with the whole sub-atomic particles and general breakdown of how Doctor Strange plays out in the first and second acts, but knowing that Kaecilius and his followers show up in the film from this report and the trailer, I’m feeling pretty good about the direction Doctor Strange is moving in.
Of course, the new question is how much will this Kaecilius have in common with the comic book version of Kaecilius who is a disciple of Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor’s character). Not a lot about Mordo has been officially revealed,...

Fox has once again treated us all to another action packed episode of Gotham Stories. Picking up directly where last week’s installment left off, “Run, Penguin, Run!” does not give the characters involved – or the viewer, for that matter – a chance to catch their breath.
Featuring the voice talents of Robin Lord Taylor (Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin), Camren Bicondova (Selina Kyle/Cat), Nathan Darrow (Victor Fries), Ben McKenzie (Jim Gordon) and Donal Logue (Harvey Bullock), this is the third of five motion comics that bridge the gap between the first half of Gotham Season Two, “Rise of the Villains,” and the second half, “Wrath of the Villains.”
In this particular episode, Mr. Freeze does not give his relentless pursuit of Penguin a chance to thaw and seemingly does not care who gets caught in the crossfire. Luckily for Penguin, it seems that one of his henchmen had been able to survive,...

A review of tonight's "The Leftovers" coming up just as soon as I ask you something stupid... "Have you ever heard of someone being responsible for someone's Departure?" -Nora When "The Leftovers" replaced its original theme song this season with Iris DeMent's "Let the Mystery Be," it was the show's most explicit statement yet not to expect any kind of concrete explanations for the Sudden Departure. At the same time, season 2 opened with plenty of new mysteries about life in and around Jarden, with images like Jerry slaughtering a goat in the diner, or the woman posing for photos in her wedding gown, or Erika digging up the box with the bird all raising questions we probably shouldn't have expected the show to answer. Yet it has, to varying degrees. Two weeks ago, Patti told Kevin that Evie and her friends Departed, though there remains the very large question...

Secret Wars #4
Written by Jonathan Hickman
Art by Esad Ribic
Colors by Ive Svorcina
Published by Marvel Comics
After spending the previous two issues introducing Battleworld and the New World Order of God Doom, the most recent issue of Secret Wars treats readers to a gigantic brawl between the heroes of Reed Richards’ life raft, the Cabal, and the Thor Corps. While the miniseries has yet to stall or run in place, as most event comics often do, issue four does suffer from certain pacing and mechanical issues that lead to it being the weakest installment yet.
Although the majority of this issue is dedicated to the battle between the Cabal and the assorted heroes, outside of the two major deaths, the newest installment seems meaningless at times. Because Jonathan Hickman did such an excellent job in conveying and justifying Doom’s divinity in the previous issues, any reference or...

Looking for a handy guide to 2015's biggest animated movies, from Shaun The Sheep to Minions and Peanuts? Then step this way...
There have been far better years for family entertainment, and for animated films, than 2014. Whilst there have been highlights - Paddington, The Wind Rises, How To Train Your Dragon 2, The Boxtrolls - the mix of material on offer hasn't particularly sparkled.
A quick glance at the 2015 release schedule suggests, to a degree, the same, with some notably absentees from the year's releases. And yet as we dug deeper for our traditional look ahead at the year's animated films, there might just be some real treats here. Starting with this one...
Strange Magic
Let's start with one of the wildcards. A film that only recently arrived on the 2015 release schedules is Strange Magic, which belatedly marks the feature directing debut for Gary Rydstrom.

Marvel finally has its "Doctor Strange" with the announcement that Benedict Cumberbatch will play the master magician in an upcoming film.
The "Sherlock" star will play a neurosurgeon who is drawn into a world of mystic arts following a car accident, the company said in a Thursday news release.
He'll play the character in a 2016 film directed by "Sinister" helmer Scott Derrickson and penned by "Prometheus" co-writer Jon Spaihts.
"Stephen Strange's story requires an actor capable of great depth and sincerity," producer Kevin Feige said in a statement.
"In 2016, Benedict will show audiences what makes Doctor Strange such a unique and compelling character."
Doctor Strange plays a key role in the Marvel canon.
In the comic book series "The Infinity Gauntlet," he helps to marshal the forces of Earth to take on the wicked Titan Thanos, who has obtained total control over the universe with a glove containing six "Infinity Gems.

When’s that comic book movie coming out, with the ant-sized man? This and all similar questions answered in our comic book movie calendar.
Comic book fans of the world - were you planning on spending your spare cash on anything other than cinema visits and DVD box-sets for the next six years? Well tough, because Hollywood has other ideas.
Ever since Bryan Singer’s X-Men movie jump-started the comic book movie trend in 2000 (building on the stellar work of Richard Donner and Tim Burton in the decades prior), Fox, Sony, Warner Bros., Disney and Marvel Studios have all been repeatedly cashing-in on the resurgent popularity of capes, cowls and anything ending in ‘Man’.
Now, the sheer size of the comic book movie-making world has reached a critical mass. There are now seven such films (at least) slated for every year between 2016 and 2019. There’s also a few confirmed for 2020 already,...

Marvel has revealed new information on Captain America 3. So what do we now know about Captain America: Civil War?
This article contains mild spoilers for the Civil War comics, but nothing major. As ever, the final act of Captain America: The Winter Soldier is discussed here too.
Last night Marvel Studios presented us with a veritable feast of information to gorge ourselves on – a two-part Avengers movie, date confirmations for Thor and the Guardians Of The Galaxy’s next outings and the announcement of Marvel’s debut standalone female superhero and its first bill-topping black character, too.
In all that excitement, the confirmation that Captain America: Civil War will hit screens on May 6th 2016 may not seem too spectacular. After all, we had already heard that some form of Civil War was in store for the Avengers a few weeks ago.
However, there is actually lot of...

Guardians of the Galaxy has launched Marvel Studios' run of new film properties, with Ant-Man to follow in 2015. After those, all eyes are on the master of the mystical arts, Doctor Stephen Strange.
It was revealed today (October 27) that Benedict Cumberbatch has been selected to take on the role of the Sorceror Supreme, ahead of the likes of Colin Farrell and Keanu Reeves.
Doctor Strange is one of Marvel Comics' oldest properties, one of the wealth of characters it established in the early '60s. While not as obscure as the Guardians, he is not familiar to everyone. Here's our primer of what you need to know about the master of the mystical arts:
Stephen Strange is not a good guy

Add another potential comic book movie to Tom Hardy's slate, as he's now reportedly up for the role of Apocalypse in the new X-Men film.
Well, Tom Hardy is a man with a few decisions to make. Already known for one major villain in the world of comic book movies thanks to his work as Bane in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises, he's got offers for two or three more to wade through it seems.
Hardy has been linked with playing Doctor Strange for Marvel, and it was also reported at the end of last week that he had been offered one of the key roles in the DC movie, Suicide Squad (that Fury helmer David Ayer is directing). But just to throw a proverbial spanner into the works, it turns out he might just be the choice to play Apocalypse in the next X-Men movie too.

Quick as it came, the San Diego Comic-Con is now behind us. While there was plenty of things shown at the event for fans to digest, there were some notable absences as well this year. 'A' Is Back
After Toby’s (Keegan Allen) house blows up due to a “gas leak,” the girls receive a message from A: “Did you miss me, bitches?” Toby, who went off to make sure none of his family members were in their house, is fine and confirms to Spencer (Troian Bellisario) that everyone, meaning Jenna (Tammin Sursok) and his parents, are safe. Why blow up Toby’s house when they were all gathered at Emily’s like sitting ducks? Caleb (Tyler Blackburn) tells Hanna (Ashley Benson) that he doesn’t know. What he does know: “A doesn’t shoot and miss.”
A continues to fire warning shots throughout the episode, and the girls are also being hounded by FBI’s Lt.

Marvel has been under a lot of heat since Edgar Wright walked off their Ant-Man project. Director Payton Reed has since taken on the job, and the studio is pressing forward. For the first time since Wright split with Marvel, studio president Kevin Feige spoke about the movie. In a recent interview with Total Film, he said:
"Ant-Man is still going to come out on 17 July [2015], we start filming this August. Edgar Wright, who I've known for many years, who wrote the draft with Joe Cornish - much of the movie will still be based very much on that draft and the DNA of what Edgar has created up to this point, but Peyton Reed has stepped in [to direct]. Adam McKay, a very good writer is reworking parts of the script - not the entirety of the script, but some of it - and it's going to, we believe, come to...

It’s all about CineEurope this evening as Kevin Feige has given some pretty massive updates on a Spidey / X-Men crossover and the current state of Ant-Man. He also (the man never shuts up) spoke about Dr. Strange. Earlier in the week it was announced that Scott Derrickson is to sit at a keyboard and start typing as well as sit in the director’s chair, Fiege also spoke about how important the character is as well as other “Strange” bits. "Scott Derrickson has been announced as the director. Doctor Strange is a character that I've been interested in for many, many years and that I've talked about in interviews for probably 14 years, because I believe it's very, very important for us to explore every nook and cranny of the comic-book universe and we've done the street-level heroes, and we've done the billionaire superheroes [on Earth]. We've now done the cosmic side...

Bac Films
Circa 1988, the Paris-based company created by Jean Labadie is a company of many hats. The French Distribution and International Sales Co. Bac Films is an indie outfitter that counts Frédéric Jardin’s Sleepless Night, Nicolas Provost’s The Invader, Bruno Forzani and Hélène Cattet’s The Strange Colour Of Your Body’s Tears and the sublime Michel Franco’s After Lucia (2012 Cannes) as their recent slate. Head of Sales Gilles Sousa will be once again repping Baltasar Kormákur’s latest (they worked with him on The Deep).
Croisette 2014 Offerings:
Bac Films populate three sections this year. They’ve got Thomas Cailley’s Love at First Fight (aka Fighters) in the Directors’ Fortnight (see pic above), Un Certain Regard selected Philippe Lacôte’s Run and Pablo Fendrik’s El Ardor (starring Gael Garcia Bernal) gets Special Screening status. We’ve been highly anticipating the Gael Garcia Bernal starrer – he...

Nobody thought it would work. So, a kid gets bit by a radioactive spider — and it gives him superpowers? He swings around New York City on webs and fights crime? Superhero titles were starting to come back into fashion, but Marvel Comics owner Martin Goodman didn't believe a superhero title with a high-schooler hero would sell; teenagers were generally relegated to humor comics, like Archie, or to sidekick roles, like Batman's Robin.
