"Nurse Jackie" has concluded its seven-season run on Showtime. I have a few thoughts on the finale, followed by a long conversation with showrunner Clyde Phillips, coming up just as soon as this door gets locked for the first time in centuries... "Nurse Jackie" is a show that, by the nature of its lying drug addict protagonist and the world she lived in — and the fact that it was an ongoing series that brought Showtime several awards along the way — was always going to be repetitive on some level: Jackie does something stupid, gets caught, finds a way out of it, and on and on. The series' better periods — including much of this final season — involved Jackie being forced to deal with the consequences of her actions, even if the promise of renewal brought with it the promise of another escape and another backslide. (Phillips talks about this early in the interview.

Showtime’s “Nurse Jackie” was headed for a fiery ending — literally — at the conclusion of its seventh and final season, Executive Producer Clyde Phillips told reporters Monday at the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour in Pasadena.
“We were going to burn the hospital down,” Phillips revealed, after teasing that he and the writing staff completely changed their minds before the season began shooting.
“Nurse Jackie” is set in a New York City medical center.

Ahead of Nurse Jackie‘s sixth-season premiere, Showtime has given the dark comedy starring Edie Falco an early seventh-season renewal. Clyde Phillips will continue as executive producer/showrunner after closing a new two-year overall deal with Lionsgate TV, which co-produces Nurse Jackie with Showtime. Phillips joined Nurse Jackie after Season 4. The series’ fifth season, the first with him at the helm, averaged 3.13 million weekly viewers across platforms, up 14% from Season 4. Under the overall deal, former Dexter showrunner Phillips also will develop new projects. “We are delighted to continue our longstanding relationship with Clyde Phillips, a creative powerhouse who has reinvigorated the Nurse Jackie series and who is also a prolific developer of television series in the auteur television arena,” said Lionsgate TV Group chairman Kevin Beggs. “His expertise in comedy and drama makes him a rare showrunner/creator and we are lucky to have him in the Lionsgate family.” Filming...

More than 20 years after his groundbreaking series "The Cosby Show" went off the air, Bill Cosby is making plans to return to network television. Cosby will, according to Deadline , headline a new, currently untitled sitcom that will air on NBC. Details on the new series are few, but it is said to follow a multigenerational family. Cosby is working with Tom Werner to produce. Werner, an executive producer on "The Cosby Show," also executive produced the pilot for the comedian's later follow-up series "Cosby." The original article also notes that Cosby is working with writer Tom Straw to plan a potential reboot of the animated "Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids," which would also head to television in the near future. Audiences nostalgic for Bill Cosby's brand of family-friendly programming may have reason to celebrate. In a recent interview with Yahoo TV, Cosby shared plans to revive his long-running animated series Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids with writer/producer Tom Straw (Cosby, Nurse Jackie). The half-hour show would feature the same animated format and live-action wraparounds featuring Cosby as the original series, which ran from 1972-1985. According to Cosby, "It's got to be animated, every bit of it. Maybe except for yours truly saying, 'I told you this is going to be funny, and if you pay attention, you just might learn something.'" The last iteration of the show was 2004's live...

Showtime’s resident Rn played by Edie Falco won’t be seeking unemployment benefits anytime soon. This just in, Nurse Jackie has been renewed for a season 6. The cast of the critically acclaimed series can break out the bubbly to celebrate.
If you are counting down, we are about nine days away from Nurse Jackie‘s season 5 finale, which happens on June 16th and has the title “Soul”. Doesn’t that sound alluring? Soak it up, because season 6 won’t launch until 2014.
Did you know the Showtime series was a co-production between the network and Lionsgate? It is. We like out Showtime characters nice and flawed and Edie Falco’s Emmy-winning character Jackie Peyton is definitely that. Clyde Phillips took over as showrunner following Season 4, and he will stick around for season 6, as will his fellow executive producers Caryn Mandabach, Richie Jackson and Tom Straw.

Ten days before Nurse Jackie‘s fifth-season finale, Showtime has renewed the dark comedy for a sixth season to premiere in 2014. A co-production of Showtime and Lionsgate, Nurse Jackie stars Edie Falco in her Emmy-winning role as Jackie Peyton, a strong-willed and brilliant — but very flawed — emergency room nurse. Clyde Phillips, who took over as showrunner after Season 4, will be back, joined by fellow exec producers Caryn Mandabach, Richie Jackson and Tom Straw. Production for the sixth season will begin this fall in New York. “Nurse Jackie is an essential part of the Showtime brand, and we are thrilled with the series’ growth in its fifth season,” said Showtime Entertainment President David Nevins. “Under the new leadership of Clyde Phillips, and with an amazing cast led by Edie Falco, this show is as sharp and compelling and entertaining as ever. I’m excited to get to see the next chapter in Jackie’s life.

Exclusive: Clyde Phillips has signed a new two-year overall deal with Lionsgate Television. Phillips recently joined Lionsgate’s dark comedy Nurse Jackie, and his duties as executive producer/showrunner on the Showtime series will fall under his new pact with Lionsgate, which also covers development. Phillips was already talking to Lionsgate about renewing his overall deal when the opportunity to take over Nurse Jackie came up when original showrunners Linda Wallem and Liz Brixius stepped down. “All the stars aligned,” Phillips said. “I thought Nurse Jackie was really good, and I thought it could be great.” He also liked the prospect of working with Nurse Jackie star/exec producer Edie Falco and the fact that he was not asked to just come in and “babysit” an established series. “I was asked to reboot the show, and that’s a challenge I willingly and happily accept.” Related: Showtime Renews ‘Nurse Jackie...
