Media watchdog GLAAD released its Studio Responsibility Index on Thursday, using its annual ranking of queer representation in mainstream films to stand with striking unions SAG-AFTRA and the Writers Guild of America.
Convening in-person at the Los Angeles LGBTQ Center’s Ed Gould Plaza in Hollywood, leadership from both show business unions, queer talent and GLAAD CEO Sarah Kate Ellis spoke of the dangers that work stoppages from the strikes pose to inclusive storytelling.
“The fight for worker empowerment and the fight for authentic LGBTQ plus representation in media is all part of the same struggle,” said Duncan Crabtree Ireland, chief negotiator for the actors union. Crabtree Ireland’s profile has risen significantly since he appeared alongside SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher at their fiery strike announcement press conference in July. He took the GLAAD event as a moment to make the personal political.

GLAAD has released the 11th installment of its Studio Responsibility Index, an annual study that tracks “the quantity, quality and diversity” of LGBTQ characters in films released in a calendar year by 10 Hollywood distributors.
The results found that of 350 titles released in 2022, 100 films, or 28.5 percent, featured an LGBTQ character, marking the highest number recorded in the time GLAAD has conducted the study. It should be noted, however, that in today’s peak content landscape, the number of films tracked has also increased, per GLAAD.
In those 100 films, there were 292 LGBTQ characters including 117, or 40 percent, characters of color. Of the 292, 163 were men, 119 women and 10 nonbinary. Seven of the women characters and six of the men were transgender. The showings marked a record number of nonbinary characters. Also a record: 12 of 350 films included a transgender character. Eleven LGBTQ characters were counted with a disability, also a high.

"What do you think it says about us as a society that the bad guys are always more fun?" Different Duck Films has released an official trailer for an indie horror-thriller anthology film called Immortal, which premiered at the Screamfest Horror Festival last year. It's written, directed and produced by Rob Margolies, featuring a star-studded cast headlined by Tony Todd, Dylan Baker, Robin Bartlett, Samm Levine, Vanessa Lengies, and Agnes Bruckner. "Thrown into the face of death only to emerge unharmed, the characters of Immortal are left staring at eternity in the face with uncertainty and fear like they've never imagined." A chilling horror anthology film told in four chapters, Immortal boasts career-best performances from a cast that also includes Mario Van Peebles, Lindsay Mushett, and Jason Stuart. Yes this has a solid cast, but the segments seem quite derivative - stories about immortality, another game of hunt-or-be-hunted in the woods,...

"What don't I not know?!" Epic Pictures has debuted an official trailer for an indie romance mystery thriller titled The Fare, which seems like it could be a taxi cab horror but is actually a time loop drama about a driver and his fare. From director D.C. Hamilton (The Midnight Man), the film is about a taxi driver who picks up a woman. He is entranced by her, until she suddenly disappears and he has no idea what's going on. "He and Penny find themselves trapped in an endlessly looping ride that changes their lives forever." Starring Brinna Kelly as the woman, Penny, with Gino Anthony Pesi as the driver, Harris, plus Jason Stuart, Jon Jacobs, and Matt Fontana. This is a fascinating trailer, especially with the change to color (and back) halfway through. A time loop taxi film? I'm intrigued, it looks like a cool filmmaking experiment. Here's the...

A survey of 5,700 SAG-aftra members has found that more than half of lesbian, gay and bisexual performers “have heard directors and producers make anti-gay comments about actors” and that “53% of Lgbt respondents believed that directors and producers are biased against Lgbt performers.” The study (read it here), conducted by UCLA’s Lgbt think tank Williams Institute and funded by the SAG-Producers Industry Advancement and Cooperative Fund, will be presented formally tonight during simultaneous guild town hall meetings in L.A. and NYC.
The study also found that more than a third of respondents reported that they had witnessed “disrespectful treatment” to Lgbt performers on the set. Almost one in eight of non-lgbt performers reported witnessing discrimination against Lgbt performers, including anti-gay comments by crew, directors and producers.
“We found that Lgbt performers may have substantial barriers to overcome in their search for jobs,” said the authors of the study, M.

‘Love Is Strange’ movie review: Gay romantic drama is ‘beautiful in every way’ (photo: John Lithgow and Alfred Molina in ‘Love Is Strange’) Love Is Strange is beautiful in every way that a film can be beautiful, and unabashedly so. Yet, despite its willingness to gild the lily for love of ethereal, aesthetic beauty in all its forms, it is a film that reaches for the truth — the deepest truths of what we often call “the human condition.” For all these reasons I love Ira Sachs’ movie as much as it wishes we would love each other. I love the artistry of it. I love what it has to say and that it’s something seldom said. I love that it is forgiving. Without hyperbole, I tell you that Love Is Strange is the stuff of Jean-Luc Godard (Notre Musique and In Praise of Love), Vittorio De Sica (Umberto D....

Tracy Morgan's efforts to make amends for his anti-gay comments earlier this month have drawn praise from the Screen Actors Guild. Jason Stuart, co-chair of SAG's Lgbt Actors Committee, issued a written statement today commending Morgan for his apology and for denouncing discrimination. "As a fellow comedian and actor, I applaud Tracy Morgan for his efforts in speaking out against anti-gay rhetoric, which unfortunately is still regularly expressed in some standup comedy acts," Stuart said. "The Screen Actors Guild National Lgbt Actors Committee appreciates Tracy's efforts to both learn from this experience and use this as a teachable moment. We fully support Tracy's message that discrimination has no place in today's society regardless of where it is practiced." At a June 3 comedy performance in Nashville, Tenn., Morgan claimed that being gay was a choice, that being gay is something taught by the media, and that victims of anti-gay bullying...

The Screen Actors Guild has spoken out about a controversial Newsweek article that has drawn fire from advocacy groups and the entertainment industry. In an April piece entitled "Straight Jacket," writer Ramin Setoodeh criticized the performance of actor Sean Hayes in the current Broadway revival of "Promises, Promises," asserting that the openly gay Hayes can not play a convincing heterosexual because of his sexuality."Intentional or not, Ramin Setoodeh's wrongheaded argument sends a damaging and false message that we are limited in the roles we are able to play," Jason Stuart, chair of the SAG National Lgbt Actors Committee, said in a statement from the guild. "This committee was formed to provide support to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender actors so that they no longer need to feel as if they must hide who they are in order to work in this business. Unfortunately, harmful attitudes like those of Setoodeh...

Horror remakes are definitely the hot new trend in Hollywood and I had no idea just how many remakes were being planned until I sat down and drew up a list of as many as I could find. I stopped at 7 pages and needless to say it seems that just about every movie you can imagine is getting a remake-prequel or reboot into 3D.
Here is a pretty complete list of upcoming horror remakes as of today in alphabetical order. Note: There are a few on this list that are only in the early phases of discussion and in some cases I included franchise reboots as well.
13 Tzameti: Starting the list off 13 Tzameti is more thriller then horror but still worthy of making the list. The film which started filming in New York awhile back will star Mickey Rourke and Jason Statham. The original film is a tale of Russian roulette with gruesome outcomes.

We had a meeting at the Screen Actor's Guild and they said that there is a march and I said well I'm already going to go. We took a vote and the group decided to send me, our legal counsel, the publicist, the diversity guy and a lot of actors. It's sort of neat that this was happening this year and I got to go and stand up for who I was and still get to guest star in a major television show that everybody watches and digs. I think that would not have happened for me 10 years ago. The idea that I played a straight guy in The Closer in 2009 and then I went to march publicly in Washington representing my fellow actors in the Screen Actor’s Guild was sort of neat. Don’t you think when you say it that way? I will give you an example.

"You need to use the Internet to have any career at all," says actor David Blue, who plays the recurring role of Cliff, Marc St. James' (Michael Urie) love interest on Ugly Betty. What was once the domain of paper and ink now fills cyberspace. Casting has gone from the hand-to-stack exercise of sorting through headshots to the click-and-scroll of digital images and videos. And in direct response, actors are turning to the Internet for support, social networking, and self-promotion. They are creating new roles for themselves: that of a "cyber self." Blue uses his MySpace page combo-style — personally and professionally. "MySpace has acted as a site where fans and people interested in keeping up with me can hear what's happening on a regular basis," he says. Actor and comedian Jason Stuart, who played the recurring role of Dr. Steven Michael Thomas on My Wife and Kids and co-stars in...

LAS VEGAS -- Saluting what was characterized as "grass-roots efforts" by people who love what they do, The Hollywood Reporter presented the 23rd annual Showmanship Awards, honoring the best in film promotion at local theaters nationwide. The event, held Wednesday morning in Paris hotel's Le Theatre des Arts, saw eight awards doled out, with comedian and My Wife and Kids star Jason Stuart handling hosting duties. THR editor-in-chief and publisher Robert J. Dowling kicked off the kudofest by congratulating the honorees for their hard work in what has become a very competitive entertainment environment. "Competing for the consumer's discretionary time and money has become one of the most under-recognized challenges in a vastly different business marketplace and environment today," Dowling said. "As the choices consumers have for their entertainment increase in incredible numbers, the fact remains: An hour is still an hour, and how and what consumers choose is still up to them, and when they choose one form of entertainment, virtually all others lose. But the rubber meets the road in the local community when the family leaves the house to participate in their choice of entertainment. It is the local theater owner who can have the most profound influences on their choosing a night out at the movies."...
