In honour of the 25th anniversary of Angela Bassett’s 1998 flick “How Stella Got Her Groove Back”, the actress, and director, Kevin Rodney Sullivan, compare the difference between filming sex scenes at the time to nowadays.
During a Q&a at a special screening of the film at the 2023 Tribeca Festival on Saturday, Sullivan recalled feeling nervous over the sex scenes between Bassett and her onscreen love interest, co-star Taye Diggs, because he wanted to ensure they were showcased “from a woman’s point of view.”
“It’s my fantasy, he has to be naked not me,” Bassett, 64, said of her character.
“Our fantasy,” Sullivan, 64, chimed in, noting that he and the actress worked on the scenes together, to get her input.

“Yeah, it was [a] very, very comfortable experience,” Bassett continued.

“How Stella Got Her Groove Back” star Angela Bassett and director Kevin Rodney Sullivan didn’t hold back Saturday night at a Tribeca Festival screening and talkback celebrating the movie’s 25th anniversary. Going long in a lively discussion moderated by Torell Shavone Taylor at the Sva theater in New York City, the two got candid about choreographing Stella’s sex scenes, casting at 20-something Taye Diggs to “fulfill the fantasy” and trusting an Oscar-winning scene partner like Whoopi Goldberg to hold the film together.
The beloved romantic comedy from 1998 stars Bassett as Stella Payne, a 40-year-old businesswoman who takes a well-needed vacation in Jamaica, only to fall for a handsome man half her age, Winston Shakespeare (Diggs). Bassett explained that casting Diggs as Stella’s lover for the movie was key to its success — and that it was a tight race between he and two other actors.

What would you do if you couldn't remember the day you almost died?
The new Apple TV+ drama series Surface aims to answer that question.
Gugu Mbatha-Raw plays a woman named Sophie who is left with severe memory loss after falling into the ocean.
Everyone wants her to believe she tried to kill herself, but Sophie has questions.
“But if my life was so perfect, why did I try to end it?” she wonders.
It's a logical question, and if the trailer is any indication, this will be a big psychological thriller with more questions than answers.
According to the description, Sophie is "a woman who has suffered a traumatic head injury that has left her with extreme memory loss, believed to be a result of a suicide attempt."

“If my life was so perfect, why did I try to end it?”
Gugu Mbatha-Raw stars in and executive produces the psychological thriller “Surface,” premiering on AppleTV+ July 29. The drama series is the latest Apple-produced show alongside Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine production company. “I May Destroy You” Emmy-nominated director Sam Miller helms four episodes of the series, including the pilot, and also executive produces the series; actress Jennifer Morrison, Kevin Sullivan, and Tucker Gates also directed episodes. Veronica West created the eight-episode series.
“Surface” centers on a botched suicide gone wrong. Mbatha-Raw plays a woman who is believed to be named Sophie, despite her ID saying otherwise, who jumped (fell?) off a boat in the San Francisco Bay. Sophie now has amnesia and struggles to recount the moments before her “accident” as a conspiracy unravels before her.
“Do you know what it feels like to not remember anything?...

There are few music personalities as colorful, wild, outrageous, and, well, funky as George Clinton. The man who gave the world Parliament and Funkandelic, and has made generations of listeners get up and shake it, is coming to New York City, and we want you to be there. On Monday, Clinton will appear at the Museum Of The Moving Image to present a screening of the 1994 HBO special "Cosmic Slop." It's a controversial triptych directed by Reginald Hudlin, Warrington Hudlin, and Kevin Rodney Sullivan. Based on the short story "The Space Traders" by Derrick Bell, it imagines a future where extraterrestrials promise the United States untold riches...if they hand over all the black people in the country. The screening will be followed by a talk with Clinton, who just released the memoir "Brothas Be, Yo Like George, Ain't That Funkin' Kinda Hard on You?," along with a book signing.

MGM is ready to give the Barbershop franchise another go. Ice Cube is said to be in talks for Barbershop 3, which will also bring back Cedric the Entertainer and Queen Latifah.
The original Barbershop movie was directed by Ride Along‘s Tim Story. If you recall, Cube starred as Calvin Palmer, Jr., a man who inherited a South Side Chicago barbershop from his father. He spends his normal days working in the shop, interacting with co-workers and the surrounding community.
Cube and Cedric the Entertainer starred in both the original film and the 2004 sequel, Barbershop 2: Back in Business, directed by Kevin Rodney Sullivan. That film also featured a “guest appearance” by Queen Latifah, who then headlined the Barbershop franchise spinoff, Beauty Shop in 2005.
Cube will also produce the third Barbershop alongside Matt Alvarez, Bob Teitel and George Tillman Jr. Thus far, the Barbershop films have produced $140 million in worldwide at the box office.

While we all eagerly await the next production from Paramount Pictures and J.J. Abrams’s Bad Robot (that would be Star Trek 2, if you’re living under a rock), the studio and the filmmaker’s production shingle have picked up not one, but two brand-new scripts from fresh screenwriters that look to fit right into their wheelhouse. Hey, it’s not everyone’s wheelhouse that includes both Nazi hunters and sci-fi movies that rely on hard-core psychics to make sense, and that’s a credit to the partnership. First up, on the more official side of things, Paramount has sent out a press release (via Deadline Livermore) announcing their acquisition of a spec script from screenwriter Patrick Aison called Wunderkind that they will be producing alongside Bad Robot. The film is described as “an elevated two-handed action/thriller set in the 1970′s following a young Nazi hunter with the CIA and an older Nazi hunter working...

It's official: Robert Pattinson is tired of his "RPattz" nickname.
Here at MTV News, we've been aware of Pattinson's dislike for the moniker since our first interactions with the heartthrob on the set of "Twilight" when he thought up his own nickname, Spunk Ransom. However, according to a recent interview promoting "Bel Ami" and his upcoming "Cosmopolis" with U.K. newspaper The Guardian, Pattinson revealed that he would like nothing more than for everyone to forget all about RPattz.
"When I got this part, every single article that came out was 'RPattz's struggle for credibility!'; I don't understand who invented that thing, 'RPattz,' I want to strangle them," he told the paper. "But once you've made that step, everything afterwards is not like, 'RPattz's continuing struggle for credibility!

One of the biggest success stories of the new TV season is "Modern Family," ABC's rejuvenation of the family sitcom, albeit a slightly twisted take. Most actors in the show's flawless ensemble are veterans of other series, which run the gamut from iconic to swiftly canceled. For example, "Modern Family" patriarch Ed O'Neill will forever be beloved as "Married…With Children" dad Al Bundy, while his onscreen son Jesse Tyler Ferguson previously starred on the short-lived sitcom "The Class," and TV daughter Julie Bowen has a trio of solid series ("Lost," "Boston Legal," and "Ed") under her belt. Ty Burrell, playing Bowen's clueless husband, was a regular on two previous series, as was Sofia Vergara, who plays O'Neill's trophy wife.Rounding out this picture-perfect family is Eric Stonestreet as Cameron, the gregarious longtime partner of Ferguson's uptight lawyer Mitchell. Though Stonestreet has been working regularly since his TV debut on a 1999 episode of "Dharma & Greg,...

Director Kevin Rodney Sullivan has signed a one-year overall deal at Sony Pictures Television. In addition, Sony Pictures Entertainment's Columbia Pictures is in negotiations to buy Sullivan's feature film pitch titled If the Shoe Fits, which Sullivan would direct and produce. The story takes place during the 15th century and follows what happens after the honeymoon ends for a fairy-tale prince and princess. This isn't Sullivan's first relationship with Sony on the film or TV side. He directed the Ashton Kutcher-Bernie Mac starrer Guess Who for Columbia Pictures and Regency Enterprises and also has had development deals with Sony Pictures Television in the past.

Movie buffs need not fret.
Despite taking a bite out of the original title, Guess Who actually has a lot more in common with Meet the Parents -- in both content and tone -- than it does with Guess Who's Coming to Dinner.
At the same time, this smartly cast romantic comedy manages to address still-relevant issues of race without the preachiness that aged less than gracefully in Stanley Kramer's 1967 serving of social commentary.
Mix in a pair of inspired performances by Bernie Mac and Ashton Kutcher, and you've got a certified crowd-tickler with a lot more substance than the last Focker family gathering.
Mac, a man with one of the best slow burns in the business, essentially tries the Spencer Tracy role on for size as Percy Jones, a proud family man and bank loan officer who's about to mark the 25th anniversary of his marriage to Marilyn (Judith Scott) with a big outdoor party at their suburban Cranford, N.J., home.
Arriving for the festivities is their daughter Theresa (Zoe Saldana), along with her as-yet-unintroduced boyfriend, whom Percy envisions as a suitable beau with the looks of a Denzel, the smarts of a Colin Powell and the competitive edge of a Tiger Woods.
Enter Ashton Kutcher.
Needless to say, Kutcher's Simon Green doesn't exactly hit it off wonderfully with overprotective Mr. Jones, and things go from bad to worse when the truth is revealed about financier Green's current state of employment -- as in freshly terminated -- which puts a bit of a crimp in the young couple's plans to announce their engagement.
Key to the success of Guess Who is that adversarial Mac-Kutcher chemistry, and both are working at the top of their games.
While Mac, who actually brought the update idea to producer Jenno Topping, has previously demonstrated his sharply honed big-screen comedic chops, Kutcher cements his post-That '70s Show future with what is easily his most accomplished feature film role to date.
Providing very capable backup, meanwhile, is Saldana as Kutcher's grounded fiancee and Scott as Mac's tolerant-to-a-point wife.
Also entertaining are vet Hal Williams as Mac's no-nonsense father and Kellee Stewart as Mac's youngest daughter, who figures that her sister's bringing home a white boy will provide her with a whole lot of leeway in the good-girl department.
The film also serves as a personal best for director Kevin Rodney Sullivan, who after Barbershop 2 and How Stella Got Her Groove Back has found a more assured comfort zone when it comes to blending comedy and elements of greater social significance, as provided here by the script credited to David Ronn & Jay Scherick and Peter Tolan.
While the mix doesn't always flow smoothly, especially in the protracted third act, there's sufficient promise on the menu to suggest the distinct possibility of a return dinner engagement.

Taking its place at the head of the boxoffice table this past Easter weekend was Sony's Guess Who, a modern comedic take on the venerable classic Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, which debuted with a solid $20.7 million. The Bernie Mac-Ashton Kutcher starrer, helmed by Kevin Rodney Sullivan, bested another comedy, Warner Bros. Pictures' Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous, which placed second with a debut of $14 million, grossing $17.1 million since its opening Thursday. Heading into the weekend, Miss Congeniality 2, starring Sandra Bullock and directed by John Pasquin, was the favored front-runner for the top spot at the boxoffice, but in the end it was Guess Who that proved to be the most agreeable to audiences.

Sony's Guess Who paid a surprise visit to the top spot at the boxoffice this Easter weekend as the Bernie Mac-Ashton Kutcher starrer, a contemporary comedic take on Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, came to the table with $20.7 million in its debut. Guess Who, from Columbia Pictures and Regency Enterprises and directed by Kevin Rodney Sullivan, was the fourth No. 1 opening for Sony this year. Heading into the weekend, most industry observers had projected Warner Bros. Pictures' Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous to debut in the top spot. The Sandra Bullock starrer, an FBI-set comedy helmed by John Pasquin and a sequel to the hit film Miss Congeniality, opened in the second spot with a lukewarm $14 million and $17 million since its debut Thursday. Regina King co-stars in the film. The original Miss Congeniality was a high multiple picture, opening in the fifth spot five years ago during a four-day Christmas weekend with $13.6 million, going on to gross $106.8 million by the end of its domestic run.

BERLIN -- German distributor Kinowelt Filmverleih is making a bid to return to the big league by acquiring a package of high-profile U.S. films, including Clint Eastwood's multi-Oscar nominated Million Dollar Baby and Doug Liman's upcoming action thriller Mr. and Mrs. Smith, starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Kinowelt co-CEO Rainer Koelmel told The Hollywood Reporter at the Berlin International Film Festival on Sunday. Kinowelt picked up German theatrical and DVD rights to the four-film package from Epsilon Motion Pictures, the theatrical acquisitions arm of bankrupt German rights giant KirchMedia. Kinowelt also took German rights to Stay, the upcoming drama from Finding Neverland helmer Marc Forster, which stars Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts; and the comedy Guess Who from Kevin Rodney Sullivan, featuring Bernie Mac and Ashton Kutcher.

An appealing cast inhabits well-defined characters with warmth and ease in this reunion of the Barbershop staff. Exec producing this time, Ice Cube reprises his turn as good-guy straight man to a winning comedy ensemble, while Cedric the Entertainer steps into an expanded role as the memorably opinionated, "semiretired" barber Eddie. Again pitting the beloved neighborhood institution against unwholesome business interests, Barbershop 2: Back in Business has a rollicking time reaching its foreseeable conclusion. With the built-in draw of an established concept and the addition of Queen Latifah, the film should have the legs to surpass its predecessor's take of $75 million.
The script by Don D. Scott, one of the 2002 hit's three writers, is more earthbound than the first installment. In place of painfully dumb thieves and unbelievable police raids is a bit of social context. Chicago itself is more of a presence, from its elevated trains to its late-'60s turmoil. Opening with a slice of back story from 1967 that shows how Eddie first arrived at the South Side barbershop, the film jumps into present-day action with his rant about biracial public figures and the D.C. snipers.
Given the controversy the first film stirred up with its skewering of civil rights icons, the comments this time around don't have quite the same shock value. As funny as Eddie's contrarian attitudes can be -- especially in Cedric's inimitable delivery -- there's a sense in the early going that the film is trying too hard, in its good-natured way, to offend. Once director Kevin Rodney Sullivan (How Stella Got Her Groove Back) relaxes into the story, though, the rants become an integral part of the nonstop kibitzing.
Having withstood money troubles and loan-shark maneuvers in the first film, Calvin (Ice Cube) finds his shop targeted by a cigar-chomping developer (Harry Lennix) who's installing Chicago's first branch of the Nappy Cutz chain directly across the street. Boasting such amenities as titanium clippers, leather smocks and flat-screen TVs, not to mention room to play hoops, the new haircut emporium gives Calvin ample reason to worry. Go-getter Jimmy Sean Patrick Thomas), who has left barbering for politics -- Eddie calls him West Wing -- tries to help Calvin save his business, appealing to his verbiage-spouting boss, Alderman Brown (Robert Wisdom).
As they navigate personality clashes and other tensions, Calvin's haircutters remain more or less united, especially against Calvin's fresh-from-barber-school cousin (SNL's Kenan Thompson), who they wordlessly agree is an annoyance and a fool. Isaac (Troy Garity), the sole white barber, is more convinced than ever of his haircutting super-talents, and Nigerian immigrant Dinka Leonard Earl Howze) still harbors a crush on take-no-prisoners Terri (Eve), who's catching everyone off-guard with her serenity-now enlightenment -- she's even willing to share her apple juice. Ex-con Ricky (Michael Ealy) is still secretive and enigmatic when Terri discovers what he's been up to, she uncovers another surprise in the process.
Introducing the role she'll play in the upcoming spinoff Beauty Shop, Queen Latifah makes an impression as Gina, an ex-girlfriend of Calvin's and a stylist at the women's salon next door -- where things really get raunchy. Gina and Eddie face off in a rousing bout of insult comedy that's one of the film's best scenes, not only for the laughs but for the underlying affection.
Colorful, witty production and costume design heighten the spirited proceedings, and cinematographer Tom Priestley effectively uses black-and-white and desaturated color in flashback sequences. Helmer Sullivan keeps it all moving at a lively pace. Despite the predictable story arc, he and writer Scott generally avoid plot tidiness, letting strands unwind and overlap, propelled by the terrific actors.

Following the success of Barbershop 2: Back in Business, director Kevin Rodney Sullivan is in negotiations to helm the comedy Dinner Party for Columbia Pictures. Ashton Kutcher and Bernie Mac are set to star. Dinner, being written by Peter Tolan, is about a white man (Kutcher) dating a black woman whose father (Mac) is having difficulty coming to terms with the relationship. Involved as producers will be Tall Trees' Jenno Topping, 3 Arts Entertainment's Erwin Stoff and Katalyst Films' Jason Goldberg. Betty Thomas is executive producing. Columbia senior vp production Andrea Giannetti and production co-president Matt Tolmach are overseeing. In addition to Barbershop 2, Sullivan's credits include How Stella Got Her Groove Back and the TV series I'll Fly Away. He is repped by WMA.
Despite two strong debuts at the boxoffice in North America this past weekend, 2004 continued to chug along on a rather lackluster pace overall. The total gross for the 107 films tracked by The Hollywood Reporter came in at $112.2 million -- down 7% from the comparable frame a year earlier. Of the first six weekends of the year, only two have outperformed their counterparts in 2003, which makes for an 8% shortfall for the year-to-date boxoffice. MGM's Barbershop 2: Back in Business took a seat in the top spot with $24.2 million -- the fourth-biggest opening ever in February. The ensemble comedy, featuring Ice Cube, Cedric the Entertainer and Queen Latifah, and directed by Kevin Rodney Sullivan, opened 17% better than the original Barbershop ($20.6 million).

MGM's Barbershop 2: Back in Business should take more than just a little off the top of this weekend's boxoffice. The unexpected strength last weekend of You Got Served, from Screen Gems and Melee Entertainment, which bowed at No. 1 with $16.1 million, proved yet again that there is an eager core of black moviegoers and a wider circle of hip-hop fans ready to embrace movies aimed in their direction. Hoping to build on a similar audience -- and cross over to an even broader demographic -- Barbershop 2 should rule the roost this weekend. But, in this case, that shouldn't come as much of a surprise. The real surprise occurred in September 2002, when the original Barbershop, directed by Tim Story, jumped to the top of the heap with a $20.6 million debut and went on to collect a domestic gross of $75.8 million. Its PG-13 sequel -- with Kevin Rodney Sullivan (How Stella Got Her Groove Back) at the helm -- reassembles a cast that includes Ice Cube, Cedric the Entertainer, Eve and Troy Garity and also tosses in Queen Latifah for good measure.
How Stella Got Her Groove Back helmer Kevin Sullivan has cut a deal to direct Barbershop 2 for MGM and State Street Pictures. Sullivan replaces Tim Story, who directed the first installment and was on board for the sequel but later fell out in favor of Date School at DreamWorks Pictures. With Sullivan at the helm, the studio and producers are gearing up for a summer start in Chicago.

"How Stella Got Her Groove Back" surely has its niche among mature black females, but the spicy, touching romantic comedy about a 40-year-old black woman's midlife rut should win wider appeal among intelligent moviegoers burned out by car crashes, explosions and comets.
Adapted from Terry McMillan's ribald, heartfelt novel and starring Angela Bassett in the title role, "Stella"'s got plenty of style and brains. It's a sexier, sassier version of Hollywood's old-time romancers that surely will woo respectable end-of-summer boxoffice for 20th Century Fox. But the smart film's natural groove may be on the video circuit, where it will score heavily as a Saturday night rental.
Stella has everything -- great job, great kid, lots of money -- except a life. She's an overachiever, given to long hours at her investment job where she's making a tidy living and doing all the right things, from jogging to looking out for her sisters and friends.
But all the bucks and success have come with a price: She's divorced and hasn't had a date in ages. Available guys, to Stella's critical eye, are either duds or inappropriate. In short, she's a bit of a drudge and, undeniably, somewhat of a control freak.
Luckily, Stella is smart enough to have a crazy, more adventurous friend. Delilah (Whoopi Goldberg) not only is her alter ego but is sassy enough to give Stella a kick in the butt to jump-start her dormant dating life. When Stella's young son (Michael J. Pagan) goes to visit his father for a week, Delilah convinces Stella to accompany her to Jamaica for some R&R. Namely, Delilah wants the repressed, overly disciplined Stella to sow some wild oats.
At first uptight and chilly, Stella soon warms to a young resort employee with the unlikely moniker Winston Shakespeare (Taye Diggs). He is educated, caring, good-looking and (yikes!) all of 20 years old. Winston is immediately attracted to Stella, who is flattered but cautious. Much to her amazement, Stella soon finds herself seeking out the young man and -- what did they put in those rum drinks? -- involved in a vacation romance. She finds herself laughing, cavorting and, wondrously, having fun -- great feelings she's long forgotten.
Fans of McMillan's novels will be pleased that her wickedly funny descriptions and raunchy, perceptive dialogue have been distilled marvelously in her and Ron Bass' sparkling, zesty screenplay. Unlike most summer movies, "Stella" is about people and their inner conflicts and personal obstacles: In Stella's case, it's about finding balance in her life, namely romance and professional satisfaction. Like anyone who's conscientious, she spends too much time trying to please others and fit societal norms.
Above all, Stella's battle is with herself, and it's a conflict we care about deeply in large part because of Bassett's spunky, delectable performance. While it's usually irrelevant to talk Oscars during the popcorn summer season, her spirited, ranging, juicy turn is very likely to earn a best actress nomination. Bassett is sensational: stewing, simmering, smoldering -- she takes us through all of Stella's complex, conflicted feelings.
The supporting players are well-chosen, particularly Goldberg, whose saucy turn as Stella's rambunctious sidekick is at once hilarious and heart-rending. As Stella's buttinski sisters, both Regina King as the irresponsible sibling and Suzzanne Douglas as the judgmental one are terrific. Pagan is winning as Stella's protective young son. In his feature film debut, Diggs is appropriately alluring and steady as Stella's young lover.
Special praise to director Kevin Rodney Sullivan, whose mature hand blends sexiness with smarts. Unlike many of today's romantic films whose sexy scenes are often cheesy and leeringly immature, "Stella" is wonderfully sensuous but never cheap. Admittedly, Sullivan's broad strokes sometimes get a little precious, but overall, the smart, good-hearted film sparks perfectly. And for us old-fashioned types, it climaxes in a great old-style, airport/romantic windup.
Technical contributions are scrumptiously alluring, including Jeffrey Jur's gloriously lush lensing and Chester Kaczenski's vividly telling production design. But the best technical groove goes to costume designer Ruth E. Carter for Bassett's splendid, peacock array of enticing finery. Move over superstar runway models, Bassett struts out the year's best fashion show.
