Behold — it’s Indiana Jones in embryonic form. Paramount’s South American adventure exploits Peruvian scenery and the ’50s exotica phenomenon that was the unique songstress Yma Sumac. The production receives hearty input from Charlton Heston, Nicole Maurey and Thomas Mitchell, but it’s mostly a relic today. Not because the Raiders films have stolen its thunder . . . because it’s plenty hokey, even for 1954.

One of the greatest remaining bastions of Hollywood’s golden age, Musso & Frank has been beloved of everyone from Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe to Tom Waits and Rickie Lee Jones. The latest star to call herself a regular at the storied restaurant is North America’s premiere whistler, Molly Lewis. It’s a fitting match, as Lewis’s unique, wryly camp confection of tiki-bar blues is quite unlike anything else that’s been released since the heady days of the 1950s exotica boom. Lewis’s high-pitched birdsong is endlessly fascinating, sounding not unlike ear-piercing coloratura soprano Yma Sumac, who was the whistle-toned Ariana Grande of her day. Want a musician who seems like they might soundtrack Quentin Tarantino’s next movie? Molly Lewis is your woman.
I meet Lewis on a sticky summer’s evening at the infamous Los Angeles hideaway, ahead of the release of her second EP,...

As the world fights a pandemic, we’ve been reaching out to some of our favorite artists to get their takes on these unprecedented times. Here’s what Faith No More and Mr. Bungle singer Mike Patton — who just released Necroscape, an enveloping and unsettling avant-rock odyssey by tētēma, his collaborative venture with Australian composer Anthony Pateras — had to say in response to a few quarantine questions via email.

Cocktail masters pair exotic drinks with their favorite Tiki movies. Here's what to watch while you drink.
For some, summer is a time of sweet rum drinks with tiny umbrellas and exotic-sounding names. For Tiki culture enthusiasts though, the luau is year-round and liquid aloha fills glasses in a precise combination of quality booze, fresh juices, ingredients almost entirely reserved for these cocktails, and even ice specifications.
But Tiki is more than a cocktail culture populated by Zombies, Mai Tais, Painkillers, Singapore Slings, Fog Cutters, Scorpion Bowls, Blue Hawaiians, and the like—an extended family of colorful drinks fathered in 1930s California by the likes of Donn Beach and Trader Vic.
Tiki culture is an aesthetic, a state of mind, and a way of life inspired by factual (and at times culturally appropriated) visions of Polynesia and larger Oceania, as well as the Caribbean. Summed up thusly...

Joel and Ethan Coen are back in theaters and on Netflix this year with their acclaimed Western anthology film “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” but that’s not the only reason 2018 is a great one for fans of the legendary directing duo. This year marks the 20th anniversary of “The Big Lebowski,” the 1998 crime comedy turned cult classic starring Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Julianne Moore, Steve Buscemi, and John Turturro. Mondo is celebrating the anniversary by bringing the film’s incredible soundtrack to vinyl this month.
The Mondo “Big Lebowski” vinyl goes on sale Wednesday, December 5 (purchase a copy on the Mondo official website here) and features songs by Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello, Nina Simone, The Gipsy Kings, and Townes Van Zandt, among others. The most iconic song from the film, Kenny Rogers & The First Edition’s “Just Dropped In,” is included as well. The package features all new artwork by Paul Mann.

I don’t know if you heard — you sickening, fishy, library-frequenting hunties — but RuPaul’s Drag Race is back for its sixth season tonight. Who will replace Jinkx Monsoon as the new high priestess of Yma Sumac-tinged vaudeville? I suggest we tune in and see.
But before that, please be aware that RuPaul has a new video and it’s catchy as hell. “Geronimo” is, in fact, not a ballad about Apache legends, but a thumping dance timbebomb about hos falling like dominoes and the charming elasticity of bouncing ass. It’s a draggy, saucy sequel to Ke$ha’s “Timber,” and in case you need a glossary of Ru’s ingenious “Geronimo” rhymes, I’ve compiled it here: Game of Thrones, Guantanamo, the Alamo, Home Alone, Romeo, Sharon Stone, and Al Capone. What, was there no room for Al Jarreau, Ru?

I was thinking about 2014, that bizarre, space-age year we’re now enjoying, and it occurred to me: This is going to be the best year ever.
Need proof? I’ve assembled a list of 2014′s upcoming perks, and they’re so awesome that I am now writ
1. 2014 began with our most important human asset: Anderson Cooper’s giggle.
The Kathy Griffin/Anderson Cooper New Year’s Eve Fiasco-Spectacular is always a gem, but this year Kathy turned on the major improv chops for a roast I won’t soon forget. She harassed the Silver Fox for his subpar tweets and called him a “lonely little boy” in a model’s body. Personally, I died when she described his childhood: “Mommy’s at Studio 54,” she intoned. Anderson descended into a fit of nursery giggles that is actually too adorable to describe. His giggle is a heretofore unheard noise. Like a remix...

When Season 5 of "RuPaul's Drag Race" came to its end on Monday night (May 6), fans saw campy Seattle queen Jinkx Monsoon take the crown. Zap2It caught up with Jinkx on Tuesday to see how America's Next Drag Superstar was handling her win, something she's still struggling to comprehend, she reveals.
"I have told everyone: Ask me tomorrow how I feel about winning because I'm still processing," Jinkx says. "It's gonna take a little bit for me to soak it all up and really understand what just happened. I have to say, I'm ecstatic, but I'm eating pad thai with [fellow Season 5 contestant] Ivy Winters right now and I just started crying out of nowhere. That's the kind of day it's been. We're eating lunch, drinking a coca-cola, and I just burst into tears for no reason."
While Jinkx may still have been in a state of shock, she was able to tell...

The race gets sticky and sweet, when the queens compete in a pageant of candy inspired couture.
In addition to the candy couture, the Queens have to create two other looks: A sweet 16 look, and a sugar momma executive look. But things start off with the mini-challenge, in which they have to create a puppet of a fellow queen, and the reading is by turns funny, and in one case, vicious.
In this episode (and especially on Untucked) we got to see Roxxxy Andrews as petty, cruel, and most tellingly ... insecure. Her constant berating of Jinkx hit its apex this week, and she sadly brought Detox down to her level.
That being said, this was not the best week for Jinkx in the competition, and she deserved to be in the bottom two, where she battled it out with Detox.
Fortunately for Jinkx, they have to lip-synch to the weird and fabulous Yma Sumac,...

Almost from the day Raiders of the Lost Ark premiered 30 years ago on June 12, 1981, fans have speculated about who the real-life model for Indiana Jones had been. While researching his forthcoming book, Turn Right at Machu Picchu: Rediscovering the Lost City One Step at a Time (June 30; Dutton) journalist Mark Adams (brother of EW editor Jason Adams) investigated the background of one of the prime suspects — a dashing young Yale history professor, Hiram Bingham III, who found the ruins of Machu Picchu nearly 100 years ago. Here is an exclusive excerpt from the book:

Peruvian-born singer Yma Sumac has died nine months after she learned she had colon cancer. She was 86.
The 1950s sensation, real name Zoila Augusta Emperatriz Chavarri del Castillo, passed away on Saturday at an assisted-living home in Los Angeles.
Sumac, who boasted a multi-octave vocal range, rocketed to the top of the U.S. charts with her debut album, Voice of The Xtabay when it was released in 1950.
But it was her technique and flamboyant style, designed to make her look like Incan royalty, that helped earn her the nicknames the Peruvian Songbird and Nightingale of the Andes.
During her heyday, Sumac sang at the Hollywood Bowl, New York's Carnegie Hall and the Royal Albert Hall in London. She also reportedly made a fortune onstage in Las Vegas.
She also featured in the Broadway musical Flahooley and appeared in the movies Secret of the Incas and Omar Khayyam.
Her profile rose more recently when her song Ataypura was featured in The Coen Brothers' 1998 film The Big Lebowski and again when her hit Bo Mambo was sampled for the song Hands Up by the Black Eyed Peas.
Her accomplishments were honoured in 2006 when she was presented the Orden del Sol award, commending her civil merit, by Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo.
