Netflix has acquired rights to adapt Gabriel García Márquez’s masterwork “One Hundred Years of Solitude” as a new series. The project marks the first screen adaptation of the landmark novel.
Netflix will produce a Spanish-language original series based on the novel, first published in 1967. It has since sold an estimated 50 million copies worldwide and has been translated into 46 languages. The Nobel Prize-winning author died in 2014 at 87.
García Márquez’s sons Rodrigo Garcia and Gonzalo García Barcha will serve as executive producers on the series, which will be filmed mainly in Colombia. Netflix didn’t announce other details for the “One Hundred Years of Solitude” project.
“For decades our father was reluctant to sell the film rights to ‘Cien Años de Soledad’ because he believed that it could not be made under the time constraints of a feature film, or that producing it in a language other than Spanish would not do it justice,...

Exclusive: In a competitive situation, Paramount has snapped up the rights to Meet Jimmy, a short horror film that its Dutch filmmakers David-Jan Bronsgeest and Tim Koomen will turn into a horror film. There was intense interest in the short. Paramount had an inside track given that Platinum Dunes has its deal there and is coming off the sleeper horror hit A Quiet Place. Meet Jimmy is a co-production between Platinum Dunes and The Picture Company.
Full details are being kept quiet, but the short revolves around a mysterious podcast that once listened to, has horrific consequences, much worse than the occasional ear bleeding and unpleasantness caused by listening to the podcast I do periodically with Peter Bart. Sources compare Meet Jimmy to The Ring and A Nightmare On Elm Street, with a zeitgeist hook. Good Fear and Paradigm shopped the short early this week, and Paramount and the producers...

The Rights Roundup is the most comprehensive listing of licensing of film rights at the current markets. It lists the current International Sales Agents (ISAs) alphabetically, A through Z, and their reported sales at the chief winter events – in this case the Sundance Film Festival and the Berlinale Fest and European Film Market (Efm) of the Winter 2015.
Buy the Rights Roundup Here!
The international sales agents (ISAs) are listed alphabetically and the sales are those reported to SydneysBuzz or to other trades. The author makes no claim to be comprehensive or even 100% correct. Titles show which distributors have licensed rights along with territories of the distributors as they are reported. When prices have been mentioned, they are included.
In order to assist professional research when more information is needed, international sales agents and distributors link to their own company websites and include links as well to Cinando and IMDbPro. Titles link to Cinando. If Cinando is not appropriate or does not have the title, then titles will link to IMDbPro. Occasionally they will link to the Festival because the former are not available. Subscriptions to these other databases are required.
Cineuropa.org (free) will also be referenced occasionally as will Film New Europe (free). Subscribers to Screen International will also have access to Screenbase. In theory, all of these online databases list comprehensive rights held by distributors though, in fact, each in its own unique way is missing information or contains errors.
The Efm, Sundance and Winter Rights Roundup
The European Film Market is one of the three major international film markets of the world. Without it, we in the film industry would be sitting on a two-legged stool. Along with the Cannes Marche and the American Film Market, this is where the business which supports all of us in the film business takes place. Of course there are important markets in Hong Kong (Filmart), Busan, Ventana Sur in Buenos Aires, Guadalajara, and de facto markets at many festivals, chief of which are Toronto (Tiff) and Sundance. Acquisitions there are often included in these reports as well.
It is imperative for filmmakers, buyers, sellers and financiers to know what the competition is doing, to see what films – similar in sensibility – are selling, to whom they are selling and who is selling them. All who must intelligently strategize their entry into the marketplace must come armed with this knowledge. SydneysBuzz.com’s Rights Roundups Reports give detailed and comprehensive listings with links to sellers’ and buyers’ sites and to Cinando and IMDbPro sites to facilitate deeper research.
Over 8,000 industry leaders from over 100 countries converge in Berlin February 5 to 13, 2015 for eight days of deal‐making, more than 1,000 screenings for 1,500 buyers by almost 500 international sales agents, seminars, and events for docs, young talents, tv series, books to films, coproductions and more.

Sundance and Producer Reps
A question often asked by indie filmmakers is, Do they need to have a producer rep? The answer varies. During Toronto and Sundance there are more producer reps on films than at any other festival or market. However, at Sundance 2015, 47 out of 127 films had producer reps. The breakdown was as follows:Cinetic – 14, ICM – 10, Preferred Content – 8, CAA – 6, UTA -3, Wme – 2, Submarine – 2, Paradigm – 1, Cassian Elwes – 1.
And there are many publicists, some not wanting to be named who also “represent” films but do not always attempt to make deals like the producer reps, with the exception of Steven Raphael’s Required Viewing. Publicists with films at Sundance were: Brigade with 9 films, Strategy – 7, Ryan Werner – 6, Prodigy – 6, Acme – 4, Susan Norget – 4, tcdm – 4, Steven Rafael, Mj Pakos – 2, Jazo – 1, Dish – 1, Sophie Gluck – 1, Bigtime – 1.
And there are also attorneys who rep the films but are not named here, examples: Donaldson & Califf, Linda Lichter, Shelly Surpin, Harris Tulchin, Craig Emanuel of Loeb & Loeb, et al.
14 films had U.S. distribution going into Sundance:
“A Walk In The Woods”- Entertainment in Motion (airline)
“It Follows- Radius-twc
Shaun The Sheep- Universal Pictures
Eden-broad Green Pictures
The Tribe-Drafthouse Films

After making his narrative feature directorial debut at Sundance three years ago with the brilliant Another Earth, Mike Cahill has returned to Park City for his sophomore follow-up, I Origins.
The film has opened to positive early buzz amongst festivalgoers, and it’s now officially amongst the early acquisitions. Fox Searchlight has announced that it has acquired worldwide rights to the existential drama, with Deadline hearing that the deal impressively closed around the $3m. mark.
Ian Gray, a PhD student studying molecular biology with a specialty in eye evolution, leaves his lab to go to a party and has an intense, but fleeting, encounter with a mysterious, masked model who escapes into the night. With only a picture of her stunning and iconic eyes, he tracks her down, and they fall in love. Their fundamentally different beliefs about life only serve to intensify their connection, and they vow to spend forever together.

Sundance: Amid a flurry of Park City announcements, Fox Searchlight has paid around $3m for world rights to I Origins. Separately, RADiUS-twc has picked up The Night Comes For Us and A24 has closed its second deal of the festival.
Fox Searchlight struck the I Origins deal with Wme Global and Andre des Rochers on behalf of the film and Shelley Surpin on behalf of the director following the January 18 world premiere.
Cahill’s follow-up to his directorial debut and Sundance 2011 premiere Another Earth stars Michael Pitt, Brit Marling and Astrid Bergès-Frisbey and tells of an eye research scientist who makes a profound discovery.
Cahill, Hunter Gray and Alex Orlovsky served as producers on the Verisimilitude / WeWork Studios Production and Searchlight plans a 2014 release.

If you were or were not keen on a Beach Boys biopic, you can either blame or thank the upcoming "I, Frankenstein" for its implosion.
Filming on "The Drummer," the biopic about the final years of late Beach Boys drummer Dennis Wilson, was originally slated to begin in June 2012. Then the already cast Aaron Eckhart had to pull out at the last minute citing exhaustion from filming on "I, Frankenstein", despite having spent six months learning to sing and play the piano and drums.
A year and a half on and the film hasn't made any further progress. Indefinitely delayed following Eckhart's departure, producers now say the film's fate is looking grim. Music supervisor Brad Rosenberger says: "It was a huge blow for us when Eckhart pulled out. There are no plans to make this Dennis Wilson movie now, but I don’t think it would be accurate to say...

It would be the film with the juju in David O. Russell’s zany black comedy that was the toast of the 28th Independent Spirit Awards beating Beasts Of The Southern Wild – its fiercest rival in all major categories. Silver Linings Playbook cleaned up, grabbing Best Feature, Director, Screenplay and Best Actress went to Jennifer Lawrence – the heavy favorite for tomorrow’s Oscar. Fox Searchlight might have grabbed only one award for Beasts in the Cinematography category, but it’s other Sundance pick-up The Sessions managed to nab a pair of acting prizes for Helen Hunt and Oscar snubbed John Hawkes for Best Male Lead. In our favorite grant categories, Adam Leon (Gimme the Loot) nabbed the Someone to Watch Award (last year it went to Mark Jackson), the Piaget Producers Award went to Mynette Louie (she produced Tze Chun’s sophomore film Eye of Winter which we are keeping...

David O. Russell's "Silver Linings Playbook" was the big winner at the 28th annual Independent Spirit Awards held in Santa Monica, CA this afternoon and hosted by Andy Samberg. "Silver Linings" took home the Best Feature, Actress (Jennifer Lawrence), Director, and Screenplay trophies.
McConaughey, who nearly stole the show in Steven Soderbergh's "Magic Mike," won the Best Supporting Male award for a performance that was largely ignored by the Academy Awards. As Samberg astutely observed, "We've got Matthew McConaughey...Hollywood fuck you!"
Jennifer Lawrence won the Best Female Lead award for "Silver Linings Playbook," while John Hawkes took home the Best Male Lead trophy for "Sessions." His co-star, Helen Hunt, won the Best Supporting Female award.
Michael Haneke's "Amour," a darling of the 85th Academy Awards, deservingly won Best International Film.
The awards show can be seen on IFC tonight at 10 pm (Est).

Today the 2013 Spirit Awards were handed out and it was a dominating effort from Silver Linings Playbook as it won Best Picture, Director (David O. Russell), Actress (Jennifer Lawrence) and Screenplay (Russell). The only award it was nominated for and didn't win was Best Actor where Bradley Cooper lost to John Hawkes for The Sessions, but that's only a minor blip on the radar when you win this big. Among the early awards handed out, Stephen Chbosky's The Perks of Being a Wallflower won for Best First Feature while Derek Connolly won for Best First Screenplay for the romantic sci-fi film Safety Not Guaranteed. Then the Twitterverse exploded with a Best Supporting Actor win for Matthew McConaughey and his work in Magic Mike, which, for a time, seemed like it may be able to eek into that last Supporting slot at the Oscars. No dice, a Spirit Award it will have to be.

Sometimes, maybe most of the time, ambiguous endings are cop-outs. The crime isn’t in subverting audience expectations—who wants movies without surprises?—but in betraying the stories themselves. Most stories deserve definitive endings, and audiences are rightfully frustrated when they don’t get them. But sometimes the situation is reversed and an ambiguous ending is the only way not to betray the story.
“Sound of My Voice” follows Peter, a budding filmmaker who infiltrates (for lack of a less freighted term) a cult, which is built around a woman claiming to have traveled back in time from the future. Peter drags his girlfriend along as he tries to bring down the cult and its leader, Maggie, with a biting documentary, but the more enmeshed he gets with Maggie the more his skepticism wavers. By the end of the film Peter’s feelings about Maggie reach a sort of equilibrium:...

Nominations for the 28th Film Independent Spirit Awards were announced today and were led by Moonrise Kingdom and Silver Linings Playbook with five nominations each followed closely by fellow Best Feature nominees Beasts of the Southern Wild and Keep the Lights On as well as Ava DuVernay's Middle of Nowhere, each with four nominations. Richard Linklater's Bernie was the fifth Best Feature nominee while Middle of Nowhere found its four nominations largely in the acting categories with Emayatzy Corinealdi, David Oyelowo and Lorraine Toussant all being nominated and the fourth for the John Cassavetes Award, which goes to the "best" film made for under $500,000. Looking over the list of nominees I can't help but shrug at the screenplay nomination for Ruby Sparks (a film I loathed), but it's nice to see some First Time Feature love for Colin Trevorrow's Safety Not Guaranteed and Stephen Chbosky's The Perks of Being a Wallflower,...

Here’s the official poster for a psychological drama called Sound Of My Voice, which premiers at the Sundance Film Festival.
The film is directed and co-written by Zal Batmanglij (brother of Vampire Weekend's Rostam Batmanglij). The band did the soundtrack, which is awesome. Hans Ritter and Shelley Surpin produced the film, which chronicles a couple’s infiltration into a California cult and what happens when they meet the group’s leader. Brit Marling stars (who also co-wrote and produced the film) along with Christopher Denham, Nicole Vicius, and Avery Pohl.
Official Synopsis:
Peter and Lorna, a young Silver Lake couple, delve into the underworld of a cult that meets in the San Fernando Valley. At the center of the group is an enigmatic young woman named Maggie who never leaves her basement chamber. The members follow Maggie blindly—growing her food, obsessively sanitizing the house, giving her their own blood for transfusions.

And while that's cool, it was really the premise of the film that got us hooked. Produced by Hans Ritter and Shelley Surpin, the film chronicles a couple’s infiltration into a…...
