Leicester City beat 10-man West Ham United 2-1 at Upton Park to hand Claudio Ranieri his second victory in a row as Foxes boss.
Ranieri’s men have a 100% record from their opening two Barclays Premier League matches of the season, and claimed all three points in east London thanks to goals from Shinji Okazaki and Riyad Mahrez.
Dimitri Payet did score a consolation for the home side, but goalkeeper Adrian was dismissed for a challenge on Jamie Vardy late on.
Strangely though, it was the home side who started the brighter at the Boleyn Ground, with Diafra Sakho hitting the bar after meeting Dimitri Payet’s free-kick with his head.
Then, after Mahrez was denied by a decent Adrian save, the Hammers goalkeeper then did magnificently to keep out a spectacular overhead-kick from Robert Huth.
Finally though, in the 27th minute, Leicester scored. Vardy attacked down the left,...

Papiss Cisse and Jonny Evans face a seven match ban after spitting at each other during Manchester United’s 1-0 win at St James’ Park last night.
The pair tangled during an enthralling battle in the first half, appearing to aim a series of kicks at each other before the situation turned even more unsavoury close to the interval.
After the defender upended his opponent, TV footage shows Evans spitting down towards the floor in the direction of his opponent. Wether he meant it to land on the Senegalese is anyone’s guess.
Cisse reacted by putting his head towards Evans and seemingly spitting back at him, although it is not clear if it landed on the Northern Ireland international.
The referee missed the incident meaning the Fa, who are waiting for Anthony Taylor’s report, can ban the pair retrospectively for six games each.

Liverpool finally recorded a Premier League win at Stoke City thanks to an own goal, Steven Gerrard’s penalty, a Luis Suarez brace and Daniel Sturridge scoring late on.
The visitors had never tasted victory at the Britannia, but got it here despite being pegged back to 2-2 at half time after leading 2-0. Peter Crouch and Charlie Adam came back to haunt their old club, restoring the Potters’ parity following early defensive errors which Aly Cissokho and Suarez profited from.
Raheem Sterling then won a soft penalty, however, and the returning Sturridge set Suarez up for a second. Jon Walters set up a grandstand finish, but Mark Hughes and his team went down 5-3 as Sturridge sunk Stoke at the death.
Brendan Rodgers’s Reds went ahead inside five minutes in fortuitous fashion. Cissokho saw his speculative effort take a massive deflection off home captain...

Ki Sung Yueng’s extra time winner sent Sunderland through to the Capital One Cup semi-finals as Chelsea crashed out. Fabio Borini came off the bench to cancel out a Lee Cattermole own goal and then combined with fellow sub Ki to shock the visitors.
Andre Schurrle dragged wide for Chelsea late in a first half that neither side got much of a grip on. Less than a minute after the break, however, the visitors went ahead through Lampard when he connected with Cesar Azpilicueta’s right wing centre and it went in off Cattermole.
Vito Mannone in nets for Sunderland desperately tried to claw the ball back out, but referee Anthony Taylor used goal-line technology to confirm the award. Samuel Eto’o then dragged wide with a clear sight.
Mannone kept out Kevin De Bruyne at full stretch as the Blues offensive continued. Cattermole then stung...

The eagerly awaited 2013/14 Barclays Premier League season is upon us and one must hope it will not be as mundane as last season. Only Manchester United fans will beg to differ on that one!
At the very least the opening round of matches provided us with some rest bite from the media frenzy surrounding the futures of Gareth Bale, Luis Suarez and Wayne Rooney respectively, which in all honesty is becoming more and more tedious every time they’re mentioned.
Thankfully the football on the pitch gave us a reminder of what we have spent the last couple of months longing for.
Champions Manchester United and new boss David Moyes began their season at Swansea City, while his successor at Everton, Roberto Martinez and Stoke City manager Mark Hughes also began life at their new clubs.
Same Old Arsenal?

Spurs kicked things off at the Liberty Stadium, on a chilly but calm Saturday afternoon, in a match that could define their season.
Both teams made tentative starts, passing cautiously but not really making any substantial progress in the opening minutes.
But, after seven minutes, Spurs opened the scoring through Jan Vertonghen. The Belgian found himself in possession on the halfway line and burst forward, playing a neat one-two with Gareth Bale, latching on to the Welshman’s classy through-ball and calmly slotting past Michel Vorm in the Swansea goal.
The next few minutes saw Spurs find themselves with the wind in their sails, and Gylfi Sigurdsson almost put Bale through in the eleventh minute, but Vorm gathered.
On the twelve minute mark, Adebayor was put clean through on goal by Moussa Dembele, but the Togolese marksman’s finish was lacklustre and straight at Vorm. He really should have put Spurs two goals up.

Sunderland look set to be without winger James McClean who injured his ankle whilst on duty with Republic of Ireland in midweek, but might well welcome back defender Carlos Cuéllar from the hamstring problem which has seen him sidelined for over a month. The game will probably be too soon for midfielder Lee Cattermole, despite his return to training this week, and there is some doubt over the condition of Wes Brown’s knee.
Arsenal will be without Thomas Vermaelen, and could be set to miss Laurent Koscielny, who has a calf problem, but midfielders Aaron Ramsey and Francis Coquelin should be available, along with Theo Walcott who had a foot injury. They also welcome Ivory Coast forward Gervinho back from African Nations duty, after his side went out at the quarter final stage, but left-back Kieran Gibbs...

Blunder keeper Jose Reina cost Liverpool the three points as Brendan Rodgers’ side were held to a 2-2 draw by Premier League Champions Manchester City at the Etihad.
The hosts had taken the lead against the run of play through Edin Dzeko before Liverpool pulled one back from a sensational Daniel Sturridge drive.
The visitors then took the lead from another thunderbolt, this time through Steven Gerrard, though ultimately Reina’s gaffe would cost them dear.
The Spaniard came off his line to close down Sergio Aguero, who shot into an empty goal to level the scores.
Going into this tie, Roberto Mancini knew a win was imperative if he was to close the 10-point gap on leaders Manchester United, who defeated Fulham yesterday afternoon.
But he will have to settle for a point tonight as his champions were held by a battling Liverpool side inspired by new signing Daniel Sturridge,...

Manchester City continue to be without captain Vincent Kompany for Sunday’s clash with Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium, but there is some hope for Matija Nastasic (knee), who made the bench at Qpr in midweek. Javi Garcia has so far deputised for the centre-half.
Brazilian Maicon has returned to training and could soon return, while Micah Richards (knee) could be back by the end of this month.
Mancini is also without brothers Yaya Touré and Kolo Touré who are still on international duty for the African Cup Of Nations.
New signing Philippe Coutinho will not be in the squad for the City game, as he has briefly returned to Milan after Wednesday’s switch from Inter and will not return until next week. Joe Enrique is likely to start having returned from injury in midweek.

The Premier League’s bottom side take on Liverpool this afternoon, and manager Brendan Rodgers, who didn’t travel down south to London because of picking up the winter vomiting virus, will more than fancy taking the three points from a team who have lost 22 league matches in 2012, more than any other Premier League club.
Liverpool have won three of their last four league games against Qpr but a win here would do no more good for Liverpool than a defeat would do Qpr. Liverpool can’t climb any higher than 10th this weekend save for a victory by four goals.
Luis Suarez has scored 14 times so far this season and will be looking to rediscover his shooting boots having failed to score in any of his last 2 games.
Kick-off time is at 4pm and the match from Loftus Road will be screened live on Sky Sports 1 HD on UK television,...

Swansea City take on Everton at the Liberty Stadium in today’s early Premier League match. Kick-off time is at 12.45pm and the match will be screened live on UK television on Sky Sports 2.
Everton were one of the three teams to beat the Swans at the Liberty Stadium last season and long-serving manager David Moyes will be hopeful they can recreate this win in the lunchtime encounter. Everton have already defeated Manchester United this season and have easily proven themselves as a threat to any team.
The Toffees will be without Darron Gibson and Nikica Jelavic although their star man Marouane Fellaini will be fit. Tony Hibbert is a late doubt.

Arsenal dealt their hopes of qualifying for the 2012/13 Champions League a significant blow this afternoon. The Gunners could only manage a draw against a resolute Norwich City side, with goalkeeper John Ruddy in inspired form.
Arsenal were straight out of the blocks and took the lead through Yossi Benayoun. His curling shot flew past Ruddy with just 70 seconds on the clock.
But Norwich were allowed back into the game through an error by Arsenal keeper Wojciech Szczesny, who managed to let Wes Hoolahan’s seemingly nonthreatening effort beat him.
Grant Holt then saw his shot deflected into the Arsenal net to give The Canaries a deserved lead.
Norwich could have extended their advantage late in the second half, but referee Anthony Taylor missed a blatant shirt pull by Laurent Koscielny in the Arsenal six yard box.
Arsenal were much brighter in the second half, Arsene Wenger clearly reminding his side how much was at stake,...

Fulham welcome Norwich City to Craven Cottage this afternoon for what is very much a mid-table clash.
Martin Jol’s side are going through something of a mini rough patch at the moment. Nothing to be too concerned about, but they’ve lost their last three games on the bounce including a convincingly 3-0 loss to Swansea and a lacklustre 1-0 defeat to struggling Aston Villa. Will they turn it round against a Norwich side that haven’t won in their last 12 visits to the capital? He didn’t seem completely convinced…
“I don’t think there’s a big difference between the teams, the only thing is they have got a lot of players and they play in different systems and they use more players than we do.”

On a day where football was put into perspective by the tragic events of yesterday’s tie between Tottenham and Bolton, Manchester United held back nothing as they thrashed Wolves 5-0. Fabrice Muamba was announced to be in ‘critical condition’ after collapsing in yesterday’s Fa Cup, and this was honoured by both sets of players and supporters with a minute’s applause prior to kick off. Two goals from Javier Hernandez and one apiece for Danny Welbeck, Antonio Valencia and Jonny Evans helped United to victory.
Neither Manchester United or Wolves can be completely satisfied with their respective seasons so far. Naturally Sir Alex Ferguson can be happier – his side are looking strong in the title challenge, but then they usually are there or thereabouts and now they’ve crashed out of the Europa League, the poor man’s Champion’s League (‘poor’ might be a bit of an...
