Since there are already several Man of Steel reviews you can find on the site (like Jeffrey Taylor's or Erik Davis', for instance), I'll take a different approach and recommend a few graphic novels you can read as a primer for the modern characterization of Superman, which this film largely represents. The newest film to feature the world’s most iconic superhero feels very much like a product of the Superman from the comics of the last 25 years, instead of the 1960s-'70s version that was found in the Christopher Reeve films, as well as 2006’s Superman Returns. Quickly, banish those from your mind. If you go into Man of Steel with a preconceived notion of Superman akin to what you’ve seen before...

One of the things fans always want to know is the exact location of the fictional cities in comic book movies. For example, Batman's Gotham City is based on Chicago, and sometimes New York City (which goes by the nickname "Gotham"), though no one ever comes right out and makes it official. Same goes for Superman's Metropolis, which actually has an exact location in the upcoming Man of Steel ... and it's not New York. From our Superman expert Jeffrey Taylor, who visited the Man of Steel set back in 2011: "[Metropolis] was nondescript for years. The 1978 [movie] pretty much made it New York and that's what everyone assumed for a long time. The comics essentially adopted that. A lot of more recent stories like Smallville put it a few hours away, so...

What is Movie News After Dark? It’s a nightly column that falls in love with you all over again, five nights a week. It’s also a movie news column that’s debuting a new element this week — the Mnad Mini-Review — a chance for its author to deliver even more commentary, but in short, capsule review style bursts. Look for these all throughout awards season (and perhaps beyond). Django! – We begin this evening with the hottest story of the weekend: people have seen and reacted to Django Unchained. It was a slow weekend, what can I say? Alas, there was great praise for the latest of Quentin Tarantino. But more on him later. For now, there’s Django buzz, and /Film is recapping it like a motha… Alfred Hitchcock vs. Alfred Hitchcock – Over at LitReactor, the ever-studious Meredith Borders (of Badass Digest fame) takes a look at the differences between “Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho” (it...

With filming completed and still over a year until the release, there is little news hitting the web these days about Man of Steel. But that won’t stop Movies.com from digging up the top news items. Official Description In late March, DC Entertainment launched a new webpage about Man of Steel that included a poster-like logo and brief film description. Within hours it was removed, but lo and behold just a couple of weeks later, another description...

In the Summer of 2006, I was moving across the country from Washington, DC to Northern California with my fiancé and a truckload of our stuff. We had a 24 hour break in Nebraska for two reasons. One: The future missus had to watch Argentina play Germany in the quarter-finals of the World Cup. Her team lost. Two: I had to find a movie theater to finally see the long-anticipated Superman Returns. What I was promised was a return to the continuity of my...

A good actor can play any kind of character, but I’ve always maintained that any actor playing Superman should be a kind and humble person to begin with. Brandon Routh (Superman Returns) has maintained a reputation as a warm and open person whenever he meets a new fan. I have heard similar stories about John Haymes Newton and Gerard Christopher (Superboy and Adventures of Superboy TV series). I grew up in Williamstown, Ma where Christopher Reeve had a summer home. He had...

There are two classic curses surrounding the character of Superman. One is a superstitious claim that those who play the character will unexpectedly die or be injured at a young age and the other is that Superman will kill an actor’s career. Exactly where did these curses come from and how might they affect the new Superman, Henry Cavill? Superman is faster than a speeding bullet, but the actors who portray him on the television and movie screens are just as...

Since Superman is the most well-known fictional character in the world, the term “*blank* is my Kryptonite” is even more common than the more traditional “*blank* is my Achilles Heel.” It refers to weakness, as in a weakness to shoe-shopping, a popular sport or even something life threatening like adrenaline-fueled acts, smoking or Dunkin’ Donuts. Superman traditionally has three specific weaknesses that counteract his powers and...

The Kryptonian villains Zod and Faora have already been announced for the upcoming Man of Steel film, but remember that the creative team on the movie is the same that brought us the Batman films. Batman Begins brought to life major villains like Ra’s al Ghul and Scarecrow, but also smaller ones like Zsasz and Henri Ducard. Zod and Faora will not be the only villains in the film, but if Man of Steel is successful, we can expect two sequels. In fact...

When Michael Shannon was announced to play General Zod in Man of Steel, I was disappointed. Not because the actor lacks the chops to carry the role or even because my first thought was that this film could retread on the iconic character that Terrence Stamp portrayed in Superman: The Movie (1978) and more prominently in Superman II (1980). My problem is that there have simply been too many incarnations of the character in the last decade. None of that is to say...
