Like some of the best illustrations that graced the covers of fantasy novels and heavy metal albums in the ’70s and ’80s, Arik Roper's artwork is a portal to another world brimming with adventure and endless possibilities. Ahead of his appearance as a featured artist at MondoCon 2016 this weekend in Austin, TX, we caught up with Roper for a special "Meet the Artist" Q&A feature, and we also have a look at some of the eye-popping artwork he'll be bringing to this year's MondoCon.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Arik. What sparked your initial interest in being an artist?
Arik Roper: It was a natural path for me, being an artist. Both my parents were artists. I was surrounded by it and I instinctively was drawn toward it, and received a lot of encouragement.
Your art often transports people deep into the realms of fantasy and horror.

It is upon us again! San Diego Comic-Con is underway and with it comes many treasures and treats, especially if you're fortunate enough to attend (which, sigh, I'm not). The super talented artists at Mondo have revealed some new posters featuring the Marvel Studios films Captain America: The First Avenger and Ant-Man. If you're interested in purchasing any of these amazing prints, you can head over to the Mondo Booth on the show floor. It must be said that all of these are exclusively available at Comic-Con this week!
The first in the gallery below is a really cool poster featuring Captain America from The First Avenger standing among some rubble and looking all bad-ass. I think he's actually looking right through my soul...
This poster was designed by Rory Kurtz, and it's limited to 350 copies at $50 each.
After that, we have a Captain America poster was created by Stan and Vince.

Ghost Recon Wildlands is a new Tom Clancy title coming from Ubisoft and we got a new pre-E3 trailer, and some special edition details!
The new trailer sets up the whole idea of "Ghost" Recon by talking about the soldiers we play as in the game. There is a bit of gameplay shown, but it is mostly showing off the massive environment the game takes place in. The trailer then ends with a hint of more details coming at E3 this June.
The game is of course open world with many approaches to every battle. They do showcase a drone which can scout areas and mark enemies, along with different techniques to get into locations. They also showcase many vehicles such as bikes and even dropping out of a helicopter.
Ubisoft also announced to special editions of the game. A Deluxe Edition which includes a Huntsman rifle and motorbike, three emblems,...

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is finally in theaters, so now everyone can go see it for themselves and form their own opinions about it. (You can read my review here and tell me whether or not you agree with me in the comments.)
But regardless of your thoughts on the movie itself, Mondo has come through and delivered an excellent poster for the film by artist Ken Taylor. Unfortunately, it's already sold out — but that doesn't mean we can't admire it from afar. Check out the print (and its variant, complete with different color scheme and armored-up Batman) below:
/Film also reminded me that the artist has depicted these classic superheroes before. Here's Taylor's Mondo poster for Man of Steel from a couple of years ago, and you can see one he created for Tim Burton's Batman below:

This Friday, director John Hillcoat's new crime thriller Triple 9 hits theaters, so check back here on that day for my review and interview with the director and cast. Meanwhile, the folks at Mondo have commissioned a series of new posters to commemorate the release and pay tribute to the director's filmography. They've reached out to some of the best artists in the business to create some superb posters for The Proposition, The Road, Lawless, and Triple 9, all of which will go on sale tomorrow (February 24, 2016).
Before we get to the artwork, here's a quick statement from Hillcoat himself:
"I’ve always loved film posters from the past because they had a bold graphic flair to them, they gave films a unique and richer identity. Mondo posters and their impressive roster of artists updates and restores that honor to the movies.”
Let's get to it.

Mitchell's set features a face-to-face dyptich showing the new Max Rockatansky, played by Tom Hardy, with this face mask on - looking across at the brutal Immortan Joe, played by Hugh Keays-Byrne. There's a lot of Ken Taylor art floating around on the Internet this week because of the solo art show that Mondo is holding for him. This beautiful tribute to Julie Newmar's 1960's version of Catwoman is going to be a part of the show. I used to watch the original Batman TV series all the time groiwng up thanks to reruns. I haven't watched the show in years, though. I might have to remedy that soon.

Not too long ago I went out and bought myself a Blu-ray copy of the intense 1981 WWII submarine film Das Boot. It had been an incredibly long time since I watched it, and I was blown away by how good it was. It was like watching the movie for the first time. If you haven't seen Das Boot yet, you need to put it on your must watch list. It's one of the best war movies of all time and was nominated for six Academy Awards. Here's the plot description from IMDb:
The claustrophobic world of a WWII German U-boat; boredom, filth, and sheer terror.
Artist Ken Taylor created this fantastic poster art paying tribute to the film for Mondo. This will be part of an art show that Mondo is putting on for the artist. It opens on May 30th at 7pm at the Mondo Gallery located at 4115 Guadalupe St.

Not too long ago we featured an awesome piece of Mondo artwork from Ken Taylor that was crafted to commemorate Alfonso Cuarón's spectacular sci-fi film Children of Men. The piece was unveiled to tease a special gallery show, "The Art of Ken Taylor" that will highlight tons more pieces from one of the collectible arthouse's most frequently used talents. This weekend the Mondo Gallery will be celebrating the work of artist Ken Taylor, who has rapidly become one of the most sought after artists for film and music prints. His stamp is all over the last few years of Mondo selections, with prints for Watchmen, Halloween and Drive among the independent art purveyor’s most popular works. With “The Art of Ken Taylor,” Mondo is giving the Australian designer the space his work has long deserved in a show all his own. Opening on May 30 at 7pm at the Mondo Gallery location (4115 Guadalupe St. in Austin, TX), the show will feature prints for films such as Children of Men and Little Shop of Horrors, both films that have not yet been featured as part of any prior Mondo releases. Another film that has never received the Mondo treatment: Wolfgang Peterson’s claustrophobic 1981 submarine drama Das Boot. Nominated for 6 Academy Awards and long heralded for its visceral...

Almost exactly one year ago, I was standing at the intersection on Guadalupe Street outside of the Mondo Gallery, talking with folks who didn't let their all-nighter in line diminish their excitement for the newest Mondo show. Last year, it was all about Tyler Stout and Ken Taylor. This year, Mondo partnered with Disney's blog Oh My Disney to create the same fervor.
Aptly named "Nothing's Impossible," the exhibit drew fans from all over the country, who lined up at the gallery as early as 48 hours before the doors opened. Distance, time and weather could not stand in the way of Mondo's loyal fans. When checking in with the line-dwellers an hour before launch, I heard, "Things are getting exciting. We're all standing now!" The wall of folding chairs and sleeping bags were gone, and if you didn't know better you'd have thought the queue had just formed.

Mondo has put up some of its most impressive gallery shows during SXSW in the last few years, including a Tyler Stout/Ken Taylor exhibit and another one entirely dedicated to HBO's Game of Thrones. Fans of film and television posters and artwork have come to expect great things from Alamo Drafthouse's art division Mondo, and this year is no exception. Mondo and the Oh My Disney blog will pair up for a run of limited edition Disney posters that will be available exclusively at SXSW. It's a nice contrast to last year's run of limited edition "Game of Thrones" posters, a slightly gloomier fantasy world than most of the Mouse House's material. The event will take place from March 7-11 at the Mondo Gallery on 4115 Guadalupe St, starting with an opening reception on Friday, March 7 from 3-10pm. The show features new artwork from Martin Asnin, Billy Baumann, Anne Benjamin, Daniel Danger, Jason Edmiston, Kilian Eng, Graham Erwin, Francesco Francavilla, Hero Design Studio, Brandon Holt, Aaron Horkey, Rich Kelly, Landland, Methan Studios, Mike Mitchell, Dave Perillo, Dave Petersen, Phantom City Creative, Jc Richard, Jay Ryan,...

Mondo has unveiled a couple of great new movie posters for Rian Johnson's Brick and Spike Jonze's Where the Wild Things Are. The posters were created by artists Matt Taylor and Ken Taylor. I enjoy the prints that Mondo releases, and it baffles me that studios don't commission artists like them to do design awesome art for their movies. Cool looking, big budget movies deserve amazing posters, not the crap that the studios are rushing out to us. Make sure to follow @MondoNews.

"You're not really a king, are you?" These are gorgeous. Mondo has debuted two new art prints for two beloved (cult classic) films, both of them by artists with the last name "Taylor". One of our favorite artists, Ken Taylor, has designed a wonderful print of Max & Carol from Spike Jonze's whimsical take on Where the Wild Things Are. The film was highly praised by critics, but didn't fare so well at the box office in 2009. The other poster by Matt Taylor is for Rian Johnson's directorial debut Brick, featuring Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Instead of the blue theme from the film, this one goes for a red motif, and it works very well. These prints will go on sale on Thursday, January 16th via MondoTees.com if you're interested in one. Up first, Ken Taylor's Where the Wild Things Are print - 21"x36" screen print. Edition of 350. $50 each.
