How British comics Bunty and Mandy had more fun with science fiction and fantasy stories than they were ever given credit for...
In some ways, the 80s and early 90s weren’t such a terrible time for young girls and speculative fiction. We had a few of our own exciting toy-based animated shows, like She-Ra and Jem And The Holograms – but the really big franchises aimed at us were things like My Little Pony and Care Bears, which while full of magic and joy didn’t have the same kind of appeal for slightly older girls as stuff like Transformers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or Thundercats. In much of the really popular kids’ media of the time, a girl was something you had one of, just sort of hanging around. I’d watch every Turtles episode hoping that April would get something cool to do this week.

He has been known as Frank Black and Black Francis, but when he was born on this day 45 years ago, the frontman of the Pixies was called Charles Thompson IV. No matter what you call him, he has plenty to celebrate on his birthday, as Black Francis helped invent alternative rock and was part of an incredible group who didn't need to go to the mainstream because the mainstream came to them.
Francis grew up shuttling back and forth between Boston (where he was born) and Los Angeles. He eventually settled in Boston and started a band with Joey Santiago, a friend he met while in college at the University of Massachusetts. They recruited bassist Kim Deal and drummer David Lovering, and the Pixies were born. The dynamic songwriting, razor-sharp playing and Francis' obtuse, literate lyrics made the group an instant success among indie-minded music fans when their debut Ep...

Ever since reverting from Frank Black back to his Pixies-era stage name of Black Francis for 2007’s Bluefinger, the man born Charles Thompson IV has been exploring the more decadent corners of his id with an increasing sense of urgency. It’s only inevitable, then, that Nonstoperotik would finally make explicit the seamy, menacing sexuality that’s been lurking underneath the surface since “I’ve Been Tired” and “Nimrod’s Son.” Album-opener “Lake Of Sin” casts a backward glance at Black’s early years with the Pentecostal church, pairing pummeling guitars with subdued, almost repentant vocals, before segueing ...

What up, Con-dude's and Condu-ettes? Adam here! Before I get into this preview, let's break apart a classic … Goldeneye 007 for Nintendo 64. First-person shooters are constantly being compared to it, and, apparently, nobody has lived up to it ... well except for Perfect Dark, which was made by the same developer, Rare.
What made those games incredible? Why can't anybody in the next-gen live up to a game that graced a dead console Twelve years ago?! In my opinion, it had to be the tight corridors, the unpredictable enemy AI, and a sense of freedom and pacing with a seamless (but non-intrusive) blending of puzzle-solving. There was always something interesting to do, and the freedom you had to solve the multiple missions made you Feel like you were actually in charge of the tale's outcome. Goldeneye and Perfect Dark felt like Real games, without the flash/crutch of cinematic grandeur defining the experience,...
