"Star Wars" has one of the biggest and most fleshed-out universes in fiction, one with countless worlds and characters that each come with their own stories that make the universe of the franchise feel lived-in.
A lot of it comes from the movies, sure — particularly the prequels, which changed our understanding of the originals by fleshing out the Jedi order as a corrupt police force and making the Emperor an elected official. But it was in the TV shows, the books, and the games that "Star Wars" became what it is today. The movies implied more than they explained, introducing cool characters that never uttered a word but still looked like they had a story to tell — which writers would then expand later on.

NHS workers are heroes who put up with a staggering amount of stress in their working lives, but has any medical professional been through more than Holby City Hospital’s Charlie Fairhead? As news arrives that actor Derek Thompson is finally hanging up his scrubs and leaving BBC medical drama Casualty this autumn after 37 years, the only question to ask is… what took him so long?
Most of us would leave a job after getting shot in the chest by a schizophrenic killer. Not Charlie. We’d probably bow out after our first heart attack instead of keeping going after the third. In what Criterion is describing as their “first collaboration” with fabled animation studio Pixar, Andrew Stanton’s “Wall•E” will be joining the collection this November (spine #1161). And, typical of Criterion releases, it will be festooned with special features, including a new essay (by Sam Wasson), a pair of audio commentaries and a new documentary called “Wall•E A to Z,” featuring co-writer/director Andrew Stanton and writer Jim Reardon.
“Wall•E,” released back in 2008, originated as an idea from “Up” director (and current Pixar chief creative officer) Pete Docter called “Trash Planet.” Soon the idea mutated, as it was passed to Stanton and the focus became squarely on a small, lonely robot inhabiting an abandoned, garbage-covered Earth. When another droid visits Earth, the sleek new Eve, Wall•E falls in love. He follows her to the Axiom, a cruise ship in space, and together they reignite the human race.

“Wall-e,” Pixar’s 2008 sci-fi love-story animated film classic, is getting a special three-disc 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray release from the Criterion Collection this fall.
The special edition of “Wall-e,” the first collaboration between Criterion and Disney’s Pixar, features a 4K digital master approved by director Andrew Stanton, according to Criterion. The three-disc set will be available Nov. 22, 2022, and is currently available to pre-order from Criterion’s site for 39.96.
“Wall-e” is set in the 29th century, after humans have long since fled Earth for outer space, leaving the movie’s protagonist — the last functioning trash-compacting robot — to go about the work of cleaning up the pollution-choked planet, one piece of garbage at a time. When he meets Eve, a fellow automaton sent to detect plant life, the pair are launched on an intergalactic quest to return humanity to Earth.

In a bit of an unexpected and pleasant surprise for fans of both animation and physical media, Pixar has teamed up with the folks at Criterion for a special 4K Ultra HD release of one of the greatest animated movies of the last 15 years (at least). "Wall-e," the 2008 Oscar-winning triumph from director Andrew Stanton, is indeed going to get a physical release as part of the Criterion Collection. And it sounds like this is going to be worth the money.
Criterion made the somewhat unexpected announcement out of nowhere, revealing that the 4K edition of "Wall-e" will be hitting shelves in November. So Pixar fans now know what to put on their Christmas lists this year. Aside from an impressive list of special features (more on that in a moment), the film has been mastered in 4K, which was approved by Stanton personally. The new release also comes with some...

You often hear that there are no new ideas in Hollywood. You could point to the recent boom period of sequels, prequels, reboots, side-boots, and multiverses as proof. Last year, The Atlantic's Derek Thompson outlined that the steady growth of Hollywood blockbusters since 2000 really are primarily sequels, adaptations, and reboots, rather than original works.
Thompson later backtracked from his original thesis that screenwriters are running out of new ideas. He pointed out that the flood of recycled content is market-driven rather than stemming from a lack of originality. Despite the rationale, the numbers prove that a risk-averse Hollywood prefers pre-owned to new,...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not watched “Laser Baby’s Day Out,” the first episode of Amazon Prime Video’s “The Boys Presents: Diabolical.”
Longtime buddies and producing partners Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg have been “obsessed” with Buster Keaton and Jackie Chan for the past few years, and the idea of “doing something that had no words, no dialogue and purely physical humor.” Enter the offshoot of “The Boys,” which they executive produce, Amazon’s animated shorts anthology series, “The Boys Presents: Diabolical,” which launched Friday with all eight-episodes: the first being the Rogen and Goldberg-written “Laser Baby’s Day Out.”

A million American GIs are bivouacked in the English countryside, awaiting debarkation to France… and the green fields are loaded with young English women, whose own men have been off fighting for years. John Schlesinger puts together a good drama, with an excellent cast; he also avoids the expected ‘please wait for me!’ clichés attendant to this subgenre of war film.

Having long since conquered the box office — and our hearts — Dwayne Johnson (née The Rock) is back to scale a very tall building in “Skyscraper.” He’s been in starring in movies of his own for the better part of two decades, and shows no sign of slowing down; the only thing that seems likely to slow down Johnson’s career at this point is a bid for the White House.
Whether that happens in two, six, or 10 years, the wrestler-turned-actor-turned-maybe-politician will have built up an impressive body of work that rewards revisiting. Here are his best lead performances:
18. “Faster” (2010)
Character: James “Driver” Cullen
Carla Guginos: 1
Perhaps the most ridiculous movie Johnson has ever been in — and he was in “Doom” — this automotive revenge thriller finds its star at his most self-serious. It’s a virtually silent performance from the Rock, who has as much physical charisma as anyone on...

Just 11% of top talent from diverse background.
Just one-tenth of the BBC’s top on-screen talent is from a black, ethnic, minority background (Bame), the corporation’s Annual Report has revealed (reports Broadcast).
Bame stars make up 11% of the corporation’s top earners, with the likes of BBC Radio DJ Trevor Nelson and newsreader George Alagiah among the highest paid, with salaries of between £250,000 and £300,000.
Radio 4 Today programme presenter Mishal Husain earns between £200,000 and £250,000, less than half than her colleague John Humphrys’ £600,000-£650,000 salary.
Across the BBC, some 14% of its workforce is from a Bame background, in line with the national average.
Bame stars’ salaries pale in comparison with some of the corporation’s biggest earners, which include Radio 2 presenter and former Top Gear host Chris Evans, who topped the payroll with a salary of around £2.2m.
Strictly Come Dancing host Claudia Winkleman, who also hosted a Michael Buble special at Christmas and Film 2016, was the highest...

The gangster movie is a beast very like the gangs it is based on. Depending on the country of origin the crime organisations tend to have certain looks and style and a certain tradition that they cling to as their laws of how to do business. The modern gangster movies are definitely an example of this, but they also share one thing in common, they lend a lot from The Long Good Friday which gets the Arrow Video treatment with its new release on Blu-ray.

"The Mafia? I've shit 'em!"
Brutal. Compelling. Poignant. Prescient. Thrilling. All words synonymous with The Long Good Friday, John Mackenzie's masterpiece that propelled the late, great Bob Hoskins to film stardom in 1980 as the complex gangster Harold Shand. Its power to enthral and shock has not diminished in the intervening years, while its cultural value has soared as it provides a fascinating snapshot of a society in transition.
Charting the demise of Shand's empire as he seeks to turn himself into a legitimate businessman through a property deal with an American client, the film is laden with aesthetic articulations of violence that are horrendous yet gripping. This is epitomised by the gory sequence in which Shand's paranoia compels him to round up potential enemies and hang them upside down on meat hooks in an abattoir, complete with Pov shots from the captives to reinforce the chilling sense of horror.

1. Unbundled Cable: Many of us gripe about cable costs, especially in a VOD world where we expect to watch what we want, when we want it. Why should we have to pay for channels we never watch? Wouldn't it be cheaper to buy our favorite shows a la carte? Over at "The Atlantic," Derek Thompson investigates and finds that, according to analysis from Needham Insights, Espn alone would cost $30/month if you paid for it a la carte. AMC would cost around $10. As Thompson points out, most cable subscribers pay a little under $40 a month for cable, which is about the same as it would cost to get just Espn and AMC. "In simpler English: TV just got more expensive with just two a la carte channels," writes Thompson. What do you think? Does a la carte still sound appealing? 2. Vine Videos To TV: We've written about how Vine is impacting the indie film world.

John McCririck has started legal action against Channel 4 over allegations that he was dropped from the broadcaster's racing coverage due to age. McCririck was one of the channel's presenters to be axed when it switched production teams from Highflyer to Img in 2012. Derek Thompson, Mike Cattermole and Alastair Down were also dropped in the handover. Veteran form expert Jim McGrath has remained on the team, alongside new anchor Clare Balding. McCririck spoke out about Channel 4's decision last October and is now suing the channel with the services of employment and sports law specialist solicitor Stephen Beverley, of the London West End Cavendish Legal Group. Apparently so, according to writer Derek Thompson’s well researched and engagingly presented, but unfortunately misguided, article about pay TV pricing (“Prisoners of Cable“) in the latest issue of my favorite magazine, The Atlantic. Forgotten Classics is a recurring feature, a look back and reflection on great motion pictures that often slip under the radar and become under-appreciated, ignored relics of a previous era or simply damned by lack of face time in the spotlight.
The Long Good Friday
Directed by John Mackenzie
Screenplay by Barrie Keeffe
UK, 1980
The urge to remain topical while discussing the past can quite easily be met when it comes to film, such is the sliding wall of time, faces and names that retains connection. But sometimes such links aren’t of the happy variety, such as the case here. Bob Hoskins, renowned actor of burly, diminutive disposition and with occasionally overlooked raw talent and expressive style as a thespian, last month retired from the acting business after it emerged he is suffering from Parkinson’s disease, a degenerative disorder made famous by Michael J Fox’s diagnosis in the 1990’s.

Casualty actor Derek Thompson has revealed that he is "sad" to be leaving Bristol for Cardiff. The actor, who has played Charlie Fairhead in the medical soap since 1986, blamed "BBC bureaucracy" for the move, which was confirmed back in March 2009. On the last day of filming in Bristol, Thompson thanked fans for their campaign to keep production in the city, but said that the chances of the BBC changing its decision was like "throwing a snowball into a furnace". "I'm still sad it's leaving Bristol, not just because it's convenient for me but because it's meant a lot to Bristol over the years," he told the Evening Post. "Bristol is losing out. "My first thought was that it was like moving Taggart to Birmingham - how are they going to move Casualty to Cardiff? "That's a product (more)...

Derek Thompson (Dwayne Johnson) is a maniacal hockey player that got his nickname "Toothfairy" by hitting opposing players so hard he seperates them from their teeth. The crowd is wild for the colder persona of the sports hero, cheering him on to be unmerciful with his hockey hits. Thompson is dating Carly (Ashley Judd), a mother of two kids. Her daughter is Tess (Destiny Whitlock), who looks up to Thompson. The teenage son, Randy (Chase Ellison) isn't quite as enchanted with the antics of his mother's new beau. While the two...
