In the comments section of last year’s Best Movie Posters of the Year I got a nice shoutout from an unexpected and most welcome source: the Alhambra Cinema in Keswick, in England’s Lake District. Built in 1913, the Alhambra is apparently the sixth oldest continuously-running cinema in the UK. I’ve been writing introductions to these annual Movie Poster of the Year roundups for fifteen years and so I am quite happy to cede the floor this year to the good folks at the Alhambra, because who better to talk about movie poster design than the people who run one of the cinemas that rely on it?Excellent choices and all great posters. For our cinema in the Lake District, the five quads we have outside make a big difference. When a poster is truly impactful, it definitely draws people in (I would only have added “The Duke” and...

Choose is a film from director Marcus Graves, which premiered at the 2010 Frightfest Halloween All-Nighter in Leicester Square (Quiet Earth). Recently, the film was released on DVD in the United Kingdom through G2 Pictures. The film stars some notables such as Kevin Pollak (The Usual Suspects), Bruce Dern (Monster) and Katheryn Winnick (Amusement). Each actor does their best to sell a tense thriller, but the musical work of Nathan Larson is what creates much of the tension. The story brings back the ancient Jewish law of an eye for an eye for eye, or in this case a life for a life, in what is a mostly solid thriller.
Winnick plays Fiona, a woman stalked by a masked killer. Before the final confrontation, several appearingly random people are subjected to torture and dismemberment, with few actual choices. The connections become clearer later on,...

A new trailer has been circulating recently for the horror thriller Choose. This film will make its way to DVD January 17th in the United Kingdom and the teaser below will make horror fans hope for a release in North America. Currently, there are no plans to release this title in this territory.
In the clip below, Katheryn Winnick (Night and Day) plays Fiona Wagner, a woman with a decision. A cold-blooded killer delivers a moral dilemma via knifepoint. She must choose to kill either her father or her mother. Have a watch inside.
The Choose synopsis:
"The peace and tranquility of an idyllic, suburban city is suddenly broken. Behind a picket fence and manicured lawn, teenager Sara awakens, startled as a rush of cold air gently pushes the bedroom door open.

Here’s some news to gladden the heart of anyone worried that we’d lost Robert Zemeckis to performance capture ‘toons forever: it would seem that he’s combining an old passion, time travel, with the opportunity to get back into the world of fully live-action filmmaking for Timeless. There are few details of the plot yet, but we do know it’s being written by Mike Thompson (who penned Love Happens and Dragonfly) and is planned as a major event film, most likely for Warners Bros. That he’s considering shifting studios is not a big surprise, since Disney shut down the animation facility he owned, ImageMovers Digital, earlier in the year.Let’s not forget that Zemeckis was the director behind the Back to the Future trilogy, which makes him solidly qualified to dabble in shifting time periods again. (For those who are happily re-visiting the first film...

Great Scott! I’ve been eagerly anticipating director Robert Zemeckis‘ return to live-action as he has experimented with mo-cap for much of the last decade. After delivering Beowulf, Polar Express and The Christmas Carol, the director plans to return to his Back to the Future roots with a new time travel roots. [Deadline]
“He is at the center of a deal” with Warner Brothers to direct a new time travel pitch to be written by Mike Thompson (Love Happens, Dragonfly). The project is titled Timeless and it will be a “big tentpole picture.” Zemeckis is also rumored to be in the running for the Christopher Nolan-produced Superman reboot. A director will be announced in the next few weeks for that project.
With the Timeless script not written yet, Zemeckis could fit it into his schedule. I recently saw Back to The Future in a special theatrical showing and it still completely holds up.

Exclusive: It has been a decade since Robert Zemeckis last directed a live action film, the classic Cast Away. It has been 25 years since he launched the time travel trilogy Back to the Future. I'm told that Zemeckis is plotting a return to both folds at Warner Bros, where he is at the center of a deal for the time travel pitch Timeless. It's a big tent pole picture that will be written by Mike Thompson. Zemeckis and his ImageMovers will produce. Deal is mid six-figures. Zemeckis and Image Movers have been cozy-ing up with Warner Bros since Disney shuttered its Marin County animation facility ImageMovers Digital earlier this year. Even though Zemeckis once seemed comfortable directing pictures exclusively in the 3D performance capture process he pioneered in Polar Express, Beowulf, A Christmas Carol and the upcoming Beatles pic Yellow Submarine, Zemeckis has lately been rumored to be kicking the...

First of all: apparently Robert Zemeckis is also a rumored candidate for the next 'Superman' movie. But that's not what we're here to talk about. The big news is, even if he doesn't take on the Man of Steel, the guy currently synonymous with motion-capture animation is possibly targeting his first live-action feature in ten years. Deadline reports the 'Back to the Future' filmmaker (who also played a little with the fourth dimension in 'Contact' and 'A Christmas Carol') will likely helm another "big tent pole" time travel picture called 'Timeless,' which will be scripted by Mike Thompson ('Love Happens'). Zemeckis and his ImageMovers company will at least produce the project at Warner Bros.
This makes a lot of sense, not necessarily because we dislike his mo-cap work but because his last live-action effort, 'Cast Away,...

The last time Robert Zemeckis did anything with humans was Cast Away in the year 2000. Now it looks like the man of many trades will be going back to the live-action world with a project called Timeless. It's actually another time traveling effort that was pitched for Warner Bros. Unlike Back To The Future, this new project is not written by him. The guy who penned this screenplay is Mike Thompson. Unfortunately Thompson wrote Love Happens, so don't get too excited there. Chicago – In the realm of lazy date movies, “Love Happens” achieves a sort of morbid grandeur. There isn’t a single original or authentic moment in all 109 minutes of the picture, which is so devoted to its formulaic structure that it often doesn’t make a lick of sense. People say and do things for no conceivable reason other than to create “crises” leading to “resolutions” leading to audience exasperation.
From “In the Company of Men” to “Thank You for Smoking,” Aaron Eckhart has made a career out of playing insincere SOBs, whose smarmy personas barely mask their corruptible nature. It doesn’t help that Eckhart’s character in “Love Happens,” self-help author Burke Ryan, looks exactly like the two-faced Harvey Dent. Yet Burke is supposed to be the real deal: a genuine do-gooder whose determination to help others emerged in the aftermath of his wife’s death.

The romantic comedy "Love Happens" starring Jennifer Aniston and Aaron Eckhart will be released on DVD, Blu-ray and digital download on February 2 of 2010, just in time for Valentine's Day.
The movie tells the story of a self-help author Dr. Burke Ryan (Eckhart) who arrives in Seattle to teach a sold-out seminar. But the therapist who asks his patients to openly confront their pain is secretly unable to take his own advice. Eloise Chandler (Aniston) has sworn off men and decided to focus on her floral business. However, when she meets Burke at the hotel where he's speaking, the two are instantly attracted. But will two people who have met the right person at exactly the wrong time be able to give love another chance?
The Blu-ray and DVD will offer several additional features. Commentaries with director and co-writer Brandon Camp, producer and co-writer Mike Thompson and executive producer Rick Solomon are included.

One of the great challenges facing any film critic is the quest to find something interesting to write about a movie like Love Happens. Coming straight from the romantic comedy drawing board, there’s virtually no cliché left unexplored by director/co-writer Brandon Camp and his writing partner Mike Thompson. It’s a dull picture, calculated counterprogramming, and watching it is akin to experiencing the giant Hollywood machine at work. Let’s run down a list of the movie’s features. Does it have a sensitive, burly man as its main character? Check. How about a beautiful modern setting? Check. Awkward yet cute meeting between seemingly mismatched partners? Absolutely there is. Will they fight before discovering they’re drawn to each other? Of course they will. Can’t forget the goofy, comic relief best friends, can we? Nope. The movie has them as well. One could go on and on. Aaron Eckhart...

The players: Director: Brandon Camp, Writers: Brandon Camp, Mike Thompson, Cast: Aaron Eckhart, Jennifer Aniston, Dan Fogler, John Carroll Lynch, Martin Sheen
Facts of interest: None.
The plot: A self-help author (Eckhart) who has troubles dealing with his own problems falls for a florist.
Our thoughts: Brandon Camp’s “Love Happens” is more of a tearjerker than a romance, and that’s certainly part of what’s wrong with the film. As awkward as it sounds, this movie would probably work a whole lot better without the love story, because at its core, it’s more about dealing with loss than falling in love.

Weird how it feels like a “slow” week when I’ve got “only” four movies on my slate. Four movies, that is, in a screening room, which isn’t counting all the press roundtables I’m doing this week, and the stack of DVDs I want to get to, and the IFC movies available on demand I’d like to watch, and so on. Not that I’ll actually get to them all: no, they’ll just keep sitting there in those piles around my desk, alternately taunting me and weeping inconsolably at how it’s obvious that I never loved them and are clearly enjoying breaking their hearst by ignoring them... If I were inventing a fake movie and a fake poster for that fake movie for a real movie that wanted to send up Hollywood’s love of apocalyptic levels of bullshit and schmaltz when it comes to “romance,...

It's the one you've all been waiting for, gentlemen: a new film from the author of The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants. Yes, it- wait, come back! Come back! Ahem. Well, Robinson's currently directing Miley Cyrus in The Last Song, wherein the teen sensation plays a rebellious girl who's trying to connect to her concert pianist father (bet they bond over music!), but has made her way up through TV direction from a start on shows like Holby City (yes, really) and Weeds. Aaron Eckhart and Jennifer Aniston go all romantic in Brandon Camp's upcoming drama "Love Happens," which is scheduled to open in theaters Sept. 18, 2009.

Brandon Camp, director of the forthcoming Jennifer Aniston/Aaron Eckhart romantic drama Traveling, has chosen his next project: Choose. A thriller about a journalism grad student (Katheryn Winnick) hunting down a serial killer with the help of her detective dad (Kevin Pollak) and a psychiatrist (Bruce Dern), Choose represents something of a sea change for Camp from Traveling, which will be released next year. However, he’s only wearing his writing-producing hat for this one, along with his partner, Mike Thompson. Oscar-winning visual effects supervisor turned second unit director, Robert Legato, is the one calling the shots on the film, which is currently shooting in New York. We wish them well: Empire is always interested to see movies about crusading journalists, although we're not sure about the whole hunting for a serial killer business. People might start to get ideas...
