The Golden Girls doesn’t seem like a provocative show at first glance. The sitcom was, however, groundbreaking. All living together, the cast of middle-aged women was certainly a fresh idea. For years, fans assumed Rue McClanahan, Bea Arthur, Betty White, and Estelle Getty, the actors who played Blanche Devereaux, Dorothy Zbornak, Rose Nylund, and Sophia Petrillo, respectively, were friends outside of work. That wasn’t the case. While several cast members were friendly, Bea Arthur had issues with one of her co-stars. She took issue with Betty White. In a new book, a writer for the series revealed that Arthur thought Betty White was “two-faced.”

The casting director of Grease has described the 1978 film musical as a “non-pc fairytale”.
Grease, which starred John Travolta and the late Olivia Newton-John as two high school students who fall in love, has faced criticism in recent years for its problematic elements.
In a new oral history of the film for The Guardian, casting director Joel Thurm also rejected one of the common criticisms of the film’s casting – that most of the actors look too old to accurately portray high school students.
“People might say the cast is too old, but Grease is not a documentary; it’s a fantasy,” he claimed. “It is a non-pc fairytale that is better for the cast not being teens.
“The only thing that was important was that the cast all looked about the same age as each other, which they did,” he added.

One memorable performance from late actor and sex symbol Raquel Welch came when she played an aggressively amplified version of herself on Seinfeld in 1997. It allowed her to hilariously address longstanding rumors of being challenging to work with.
When asked about the guest appearance, Welch said it was “so much fun” to portray herself as a “horrible ball breaker,” adding she thought the part was written as more diva than villain. She also explained where her reputation for being “tempestuous” in real life might have originated and how it presented when she was a guest on Mork & Mindy.

Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta “Go Together” perfectly onscreen, but the Australian-raised pop star hesitated to sign on to the 1978 musical movie.
“Grease” casting director Joel Thurm revealed that Travolta suggested Newton-John play Sandy, the happy-go-lucky new girl who had a summer fling with Travolta’s Danny Zucko.
“John was already pre-set, and John asked me, ‘What do you think of Olivia?’ I said, ‘She’s wonderful.’ He said, ‘What do you think of her for Sandy? That’s a great idea,'” Thurm told People. “And once John said that, and that’s who John wanted, I stopped anything else.”
Thurm noted that he had “nobody” as a “backup” if Newton-John declined the role.
“If she said no, I’d be playing the part in a poodle skirt,” Thurm quipped. “So everybody wanted Olivia here, but Olivia didn’t jump at the offer. That’s the important thing to know.

We love Cassandra Peterson, a smart woman who made a go of horror host work in the tough Los Angeles TV market, long after the short-lived Vampira and just a few years after the passing of Sinister Seymour. After Elvira’s Movie Macabre she got to make this lively comedy feature, and thus planted her stake in the cinema firmament while at the top of her game. I’d give it an A+ for nostalgic sentiment, a B for quality and a B+ for wit, even if the adult humor does skew a bit infantile. Well, that was part of the Elvira personality too!

We Love Soaps TV: Did you see the Daytime Emmy’s this year?
Thom Christopher: No, but I read the L.A. Times review. It was scathing. Knowing that daytime is in its twilight, I would have thought there would have been courtesy toward it.
