Anthony Padilla is reuniting with Smosh–and he, along with Smosh co-founder Ian Hecox, are buying the digital comedy brand from Rhett & Link.
Padilla and Hecox met in sixth grade and were still best friends when they first launched Smosh on YouTube in 2005. Together they amassed dozens of cast and crew members, millions of subscribers, and became one of the most recognizable creator-led media companies in online video.
But then, in 2017, Padilla left. He cited creative differences, but it was clear there was also a rift between him and Hecox.
“By the time Anthony left Smosh, our friendship was not really that good,” Hecox told Variety. Last year, the duo got back in touch, and “really hit it off,” he added. “It’s kind of freaky how well this has all fallen into place. Our friendship had to end to be able to come back together.”

Exclusive: Digital comedy outlet Smosh has appointed Joel Rubin as the company’s first EVP of Programming and Content.
Along with the arrival of Rubin, a digital media veteran who has worked at LeBron James’ SpringHill Company, Rooster Teeth and SourceFed, current Smosh staffers Lisa Van Lenner and Kiana Parker have been promoted to expanded positions in the company’s production division.
Van Lenner has been upped from VP to SVP of production and operations. For more than two years, she has overseen the production and post-production of Smosh’s content across all its YouTube channels, streaming and social media platforms.
Parker has been elevated from creative producer to director of Smosh Pit, an unscripted channel, and will report directly to Rubin.

The first will be a television adaptation of the digital series “Man at Arms,” which is a co-production deal with Defy Media. Machinima has a new web series on the way from the Transformers franchise. The fan culture-based YouTube network, self-described as a “many-2-many” service, has partnered with toy manufacturer Hasbro to introduce a new animated series based on the Transformers Generations: Combiner Wars brand.
Announced at Hasbro’s San Diego Comic-Con panel on July 9, 2015, the unnamed Transformers web series will take place during the middle of the Combiner Wars within the franchise’s universe. The Machinima animated series will introduce new lore and characters alongside fan-favorites. More details on the series, including a release date, will be revealed in the near future.

The company is ramping up its programming and content strategies by creating the role of Chief Content Officer and tapping digital veteran Daniel Tibbets to fill it.
