While studying at Australia's National Institute of Dramatic Art, Sonia
was a cast member of the original "Strictly Ballroom" play directed by
Baz Luhrmann that went on to be turned into Strictly Ballroom (1992) the movie. She played
Tara Morice's role.
Graduated from the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in 1985
with actress Catherine McClements and director Baz Luhrmann.
She has two children -- Lewis (born 1992 from a previous relationship)
and Sean (born 2001) with husband Rhett Walton.
In 1994, she won the Silver Logie for Most Popular Actress for her work
on Police Rescue (1989) and has been nominated on four occasions for an AFI
(Australian Film Industry) Award.
Originally, she never aspired to be an actress. She trained as a
classical ballet dancer for 16 years and even traveled to Europe in her
late teens to pursue her dream before finding her way to NIDA in the
early 1980s.
