Pittsburgh Steelers offensive tackle Alejandro Villanueva says he didn’t intentionally choose to stand alone during the national anthem in Chicago.
Villanueva, a former Army Ranger, said in a press conference Monday that he felt “embarrassed” for the attention his mistake garnered.
“Unfortunately, I threw my teammates under the bus, unintentionally,” he said. “Every single time I see that picture of me, standing by myself, I feel embarrassed.”
Villanueva was the only Steelers player who stood outside the tunnel before their game Sunday against the Chicago Bears. The rest of his team chose not to take the field as part of the widespread NFL protest.

Despite the Pittsburgh Steelers’ decision to not take the field for the national anthem during their Sunday game, a single player struck out on his own – and quickly became one of the names at the center of the controversy surrounding the #TakeAKnee movement that’s sweeping the NFL.
Alejandro Villanueva – starting left tackle for the Steelers – stood alone outside the tunnel entrance to Soldier Field in Chicago during the national anthem on Sunday, with his hand over his heart.
The rest of the Pennsylvania-based team remained further back in the tunnel, out of view – a decision head coach Mike Tomlin announced ahead of the game.

The Pittsburgh Steelers were noticeably absent from the field as the national anthem played on Sunday – except offensive tackle Alejandro Villanueva, a veteran who served in the army.
While his teammates remained in the locker room, Villanueva stood alone just outside of the tunnel entrance to Soldier Field in Chicago with his hand over his heart.
Head coach Mike Tomlin told CBS Sports about the team’s plans before the game.
“We’re not participating in the anthem today, not to be disrespectful to the anthem – to remove ourselves from this circumstance,” he said. “People shouldn’t have to choose.

ABC‘s slate of new shows for fall has a strange flavor to it, and it’s going to be a bumpy ride. The network has about as many new shows as returning ones (if you count all the midseasons), and a good percentage of the returning offerings are a year old or less, making this look a bit like a rebuilding year.
Not only is it a rebuilding year, but it’s the year of bringing back every actor and actress who ever had a decent run on a show before. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a network’s new season slate that was so crammed with people returning from something else. If you can’t make it good, I suppose, make sure viewers recognize the faces.

The Steelers held off the Jets 24-19 to advance to the Super Bowl, playing an inspired, pumped-up first half that could’ve only been caused by one thing: Phil Collins. I’m not gonna automatically assume it was “In The Air Tonight” — judging by how pumped up they were, they must’ve listened to “Sussudio”, possibly with some Tarzan soundtrack thrown in there. There’s no telling what coach Mike Tomlin has planned for the night before the Super Bowl – I’m thinking either Bryan Adams “Cuts Like A Knife” or possibly the James Taylor “You’ve Got A Friend.” Either way, look out, Packers.
