Restored footage of an infamous Tokyo University debate between controversial Japanese poet and novelist Yukio Mishima and university students is the centerpiece of a documentary “Mishima: The Last Debate” by Keisuke Toyoshima, which will be released theatrically in Japan in March.
Mishima, real name Hiraoka Kimitake, is known equally as one of Japan’s most important 20th century literary figures, nominated for the Nobel Prize,, and as an unrepentant Japanese nationalist who wanted the powers of the Emperor to be restored.
The heated debate was held in 1969 at a time of mass protests in Japan, that included an uprising among students. A year later after failing to inspire an army mutiny, Mishima killed himself in ritual Japanese fashion.
The original footage of the debate was believed to have been lost, but was discovered by film makers during the process of making the documentary. It has been restored and preserved in 4K.

An international research team has discovered a way to beam images onto soap bubbles, potentially opening up incredibly thin and flexible new screen technology. The Us and Japanese researchers used ultrasonic sound to alter the properties of a bubble's membrane so that it can carry flat or even 3D images. Rather than using a traditional soap mix that creates fragile bubbles, the team developed a special solution for making more resilient bubbles. Yoichi Ochiai from the University of Tokyo, Alexis Oyama from Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Tsukub's Keisuke Toyoshima feel that they have created the world's thinnest transparent screen. In a blog post, the team said: "It is common knowledge that the surface of a bubble is a micro-membrane. It allows light to pass through and displays the colour on its structure. "We developed an ultra-thin (more)...

The official website for the upcoming teen softball comedy, Softboy, has been updated with a new trailer. The film was directed by Keisuke Toyoshima, who previously helmed segments in several omnibus projects like Ghost vs. Alien 03 and Hijoshi Zukan, as well as episodes of The Ancient Dogoo Girl TV series.
The film stars Kento Nagayama as a student named Onitsuka who’s been spending the last summer of his high school life considering his future goals—chief among them being to one day become a master chef of French cuisine. One day he’s approached by his friend Noguchi (Kento Kaku) with a harebrained scheme; if they start the first and only youth softball team in Saga Prefecture, they’d have to be invited to the national tournament by default—making them local sports heroes. Together they assemble a group of 9 players to field a team and begin practicing, but...

Regular readers of Twitch may very well recall us mentioning The Ancient Dogoo Girl a good while back. A low budget television series initiated by Machine Girl director Noboru Iguchi -- who then roped in pals Yoshihiro Nishimura (Tokyo Gore Police) and Takashi Shimizu (Juon, The Grudge) to direct episodes -- and produced for a minor Japanese cable network available only in parts of the country, Dogoo revolves around an ancient yokai-battling warrior revived in modern times. As you'd expect from an Iguchi project, the lead is not exactly shy about showing off flesh and the entire thing is shot through with crazy creatures and unrepentant adolescent energy.
The big question, of course, is when people would be able to see this thing. Heck - a healthy portion of Japan hasn't even been able to see it yet, so what are the chance of it being seen over here? Well,...
