While Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon could hardly be accused of setting the box office on fire, the animated film held over the weekend and easily outstripped the competition.
Indeed, the box office office rankings look little different than last week, as new releases Cosmic Sin, Then Came You, Judas and the Black Messiah did middling numbers.
Overall, the top 20 films made $5 million, or 13 per down on the previous, with the box office sluggish ahead of new releases such as Godzilla Vs. Kong and Peter Rabbit 2 later this month.
Local feature doc Girls Can’t Surf, from Madman, bowed shy of the top 10 on $103,818 from 113 screens, taking it to a respectable $344,961 with previews.
Directed by Christopher Nelius, the film tells the story of how a “ragtag bunch of inspired, punk girls” took on the male-dominated sport of professional surfing in order to achieve equality. Featured are surfing greats Jodie Cooper,...

"You keep a dead husband inside a box of chocolates?" Vertical Ent. has released the first official trailer for an indie comedy titled Then Came You, from filmmaker Adriana Trigiani with a screenplay written by Kathie Lee Gifford. The romcom film is about a lonely who widow plans a trip around the world with her husband's ashes, to visit the places they loved in the movies. The first stop on the journey changes her life forever as she meets a Scottish man and falls hard for him, but struggles to let go of her dead husband and move on. This stars Kathie Lee Gifford as Annabelle, with Craig Ferguson, Ford Kiernan, Phyllida Law, and Brett James. This looks extra campy and extra schmaltzy, with all the usual "can't move on" tropes and cringe-inducing dialogue. Not to mention one of the worst song choices for a trailer ever? Eeesh. Here's the...

Life comes at you fast, but life came at Gabby Cartwright even faster.
Tempting Fate is another one of Lifetime's Book to Screen gems -- the first of a trio based on Jane Green's bestselling novel of the same name. Our leading lady was Alyssa Milano, and Grey's Anatomy's Kim Raver executive produced.
Are you ready for this? It was pretty damn good!
The promos teased a salacious affair between Gabby and Matt, and I get it, sex sells and all that fun stuff, but what made this movie so darn heartening was the theme of family.

What happens in Italy does not stay in Italy, my friends.
Let that be a word to the wise. This summer, Lifetime has their Book to Screen Saturday movies, and on the list was Adriana Trigiani’s Very Valentine starring Kelen Coleman from Big Little Lies.
The real star of the movie was Jacqueline Bisset as the coolest, prettiest, and most awesome grandmother around, Teodora. Um, excluding my grandmother, of course.
She was vibrant, full of life, and a blast for the entire movie. Also, the family dynamics of this movie were all over the place, but Gran and Valentine working, living, and going on vacation together (as well as finding their love in Italy together) was the type of modern famiglia quality content I adore.

Lifetime has greenlighted a pair of original movies based on popular novels written nearly two centuries apart. The cable net said today that Pride and Prejudice: Atlanta, a contemporary take on Jane Austen’s early 19th century classic, and an adaptation of Adriana Trigiant’s 2009 book Very Valentine will premiere next year.
Pride and Prejudice: Atlanta features an African-American cast led by Reginald VelJohnson as Reverend Bennet, a pastor of a prominent Southern Baptist church, and his wife, Mrs. Bennet (Jackée Harry), author of a self-help book on how to find the perfect husband. Needless to say, Mrs. Bennet is less than thrilled that all five of their daughters — Lizzie (Tiffany Hines), Jane (Raney Branch), Mary (Brittney Level), Lydia (Reginae Carter) and Kitty (Alexia Bailey) — are still single. Chicago – One of the truest aphorisms ever uttered is that “you can take a person out of a small town, but you can’t take the small town out of them.” Veteran novelist, TV/film writer and now director Adriana Trigiani took that eternal truth and created a film tribute to her heritage in “Big Stone Gap” (2015). Loyola University in Chicago will have a special screening of the film, with an appearance by Ms. Trigiani afterward (via Skype), on Monday, February 8th, 2016 (details below).
Adriana Trigiani celebrated her Italian roots and Appalachian background first in the “Big Stone Gap” series of novels, which began in 2000, and currently is on its fourth book. This was after she had a successful career in television writing, working on “The Cosby Show,” “A Different World,” and “City Kids” (for ABC/Jim Henson productions). Novelist, screenwriter and newly-minted narrative feature director Adriana Trigiani doesn't get too hung up on awards. Seriously. After winning the Best Ensemble Cast Award at the first annual Bentonville Film Festival this past spring, Trigiani nearly forgot her statuette at the airport, leaving it behind on a crowded breakfast table as she made her way to the flight that would take her to New York City, where the Virginia native lives and works. (Trigiani is, naturally enough, originally from the real Big Stone Gap, Virginia.) She only managed to remember the hefty honor when this writer, who was also making her way back to New York after Bff, grabbed it before it was lost forever in the hinterlands of a regional Arkansas airport.
