Electric Prunes bassist Mark Tulin has died at the age of 62. The musician was a founding member of the influential '60s psychedelic band. In 2009, he worked with Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan and briefly replaced touring bassist Ginger Pooley at one live show. A Facebook post from USC Catalina Hyperbaric Chamber read: "It is with deep sadness and a very heavy heart that I inform you of the death of Mark Tulin. "He collapsed today while helping out at the Avalon Underwater Clean-Up and had immediate response by Baywatch Avalon and Avalon Fire Department medics, but he could not be revived.
Mark was one-of-a-kind. His energy, generosity, and spirit was unmatched." (more)...

This just in from the Weird News of the Week desk - but we are suspicious.
Billy Corgan, lead singer and guitarist for the Smashing Pumpkins, tweeted last week, "Just found out the weirdest news: our bass player Nicole just admitted she is one of the girls on the cover of Siamese Dream" and "She said she didn't want us to know because she thought maybe we wouldn't let her be in the band."
Um, are you kidding Nicole?! That's like the coolest thing ever. But we have to wonder where they got the photograph, because Nicole is 31, born in 1979, and "Siamese Dream" came out in 1993. An assistant to the cover photographer tells Rolling Stone he's pretty sure the cover was shot just for the album.

Former Veruca Salt star Nicole Fiorentino has joined The Smashing Pumpkins to replace bassist Ginger Pooley. Pooley, who toured with Billy Corgan's band in 2007 and 2008, quit the group in March to concentrate on motherhood.
Corgan pulled in The Electric Prunes' star Mark Tulin to fill in and launched an audition process to find a full-time replacement. The rocker's publicist announced the big news on her MySpace.com website on Monday, May 10.
The rep states, "Nicole is proud to announce that she is the newest member of the Smashing Pumpkins. She is keeping herself very busy these days in the studio with Billy and the rest of the Pumpkins crew. She will also be performing live with band for any future tours/gigs." Fiorentino is the band's fourth female bassist.

Rocker Billy Corgan has launched a new open audition process to find a new bassist and keyboard player for The Smashing Pumpkins. Corgan has been forced to replace bassist Ginger Pooley after she quit the band last week to concentrate on motherhood. In the meantime, The Electric Prunes' star Mark Tulin will fill in.
Corgan launched an audition process to find his new drummer Mike Byrne in 2009 after longtime collaborator Jimmy Chamberlin quit the new-look Pumpkins. Pooley, who toured with Corgan and the band in 2007 and 2008, says, "With sorrow and yet with much thankfulness for the opportunity to have played in the Pumpkins, I am sad to say that I can no longer tour with the Pumpkins."
"I've been blessed beyond belief over the past few years through playing with the Pumpkins, (but) my priority now is to keep our little family unit together, which includes my husband and my baby.
