Before heading off to mainland China to direct those patriotic but commercially successful films like “Operation Mekong” (2016), “Operation Red Sea” (2018), “The Battle of Changjin” (2021), Dante Lam's last Hong Kong film starring Nick Cheung was “The Demon Within” (2014). Now, back to his roots and home turf almost a decade later and this time co-directing with Calvin Tong, he delivers us the extremely violent Category III, adults only “Bursting Point”, again with Cheung in the lead.

1998, one year into the handover of Hong Kong to China and action cinema was beginning to shift. “The Storm Riders” was the first to really demonstrate CGI enhanced action. Jackie Chan was balancing Hollywood and Hong Kong and Jet Li was about to launch himself onto a wider audience as the villain in “Lethal Weapon 4”. With that in mind, he had one more vehicle for his local fanbase that year in “Hitman”. As Eureka Entertainment re-release it as part of their “Heroes and Villains” box set, it provides an opportunity to go back to revisit a work that has gotten a bit lost in the mix over the years.

Taiwanese screenwriter and director Su Chao Bin wrote this Ming Dynasty wuxia drama primarily for Michelle Yeoh to star in. According to Su and producer Terence Chang, the approach was to do a story in the style of Gu Long's wuxia, populated with multiple characters plus a touch of suspense and mystery. Producer John Woo's input is mainly as an adviser, but he did direct one action scene which featured his daughter and thereby also credited as co-director. Su won the Best Director award for his effort at the 17th Hong Kong Film Critics Society Awards.

In the midst of her Oscar campaign, and with a lot of people consequently discovering or rediscovering her earlier work, there’s not a whole lot left to say about Michelle Yeoh. However, Eureka’s perfectly timed releases of her early classics are definitely the best way to newly appreciate Yeoh, prior to the almost regal bearing she now brings to her projects.
Magnificent Warriors was the penultimate film of Yeoh’s short early run, before she took a break from the screen during her marriage to producer Dickson Poon, making a post-divorce comeback in Police Story 3. This early run is exceptional, also including starring roles in Yes Madam and its sequel Royal Warriors, but Magnificent Warriors may be the best of them, and one of her finest films full stop.

There is a thrilling selection of Chinese-language titles at Filmart this year. Liz Shackleton picks out some of the most promising.
With very few Hong Kong or mainland Chinese sellers making the journey to this year’s European Film Market in Berlin, Filmart offers a chance for buyers to catch up with the Chinese-language titles that will be rolled out in the region for the rest of the year.
After serving up the biggest film of the Chinese New Year holiday — Kung Fu Yoga, starring Jackie Chan and directed by Stanley Tong — China’s Sparkle Roll Media has launched a Hong Kong-based sales arm that is selling Ding Sheng’s reboot of the A Better Tomorrow series.
Other high-profile action titles new to market include Distribution Workshop’s Extraordinary Mission, from the creative teams behind the Infernal Affairs and Overheard series, and Huayi Brothers’ crime drama Explosion, starring Duan Yihong.

2000’s Continued It would be three years after the success of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon before Chow Yun Fat would star in another film. Surprisingly he decided to follow that classic up with the comic book movie Bulletproof Monk (2003), which was sadly beneath him at this point in his career. The plotline is overly simplistic, making the film feel as if it was aimed at children. Hong Kong action director Tung Wai was on board to work on the fight scenes, although his work here doesn’t show him at his best with an overuse of wire-work. Director Paul Hunter preferring to use quick cuts instead of showing the skills of the stunt performers doesn’t help the action either. As well as having involvement from...

I thought it was about time i did a post on the great vampire buster of all time, yes you got it, lam Ching Ying. This will be listing all the movies and tv series where Lam Ching Ying either stars in or takes on the hopping vampires and evil spirits.
His roles in the Mr.Vampire movies show his skills as an actor, with great comic timing which goes well with his serious acting side, which we normally get to see on screen. This role would make him, not just a big star in Asia but also worldwide as the master of Vampire killers.
Other great movies which he starred in (But not in a vampire movie) were the likes of The Prodigal Son, School On Fire, Eastern Condors, The Magnificent Butcher and Painted Faces.
I have been a big fan of these movies since i first watched Mr.

When ex-Hong Kong police sharpshooter Lincoln (Xiaoming) is released from prison after serving time for the alleged manslaughter of a kidnapper during a hostage situation he has only one thing on his mind: revenge on those responsible for putting him behind bars. At the top of his hit list is former colleague and fellow marksman Hartman (Jen), who Lincoln believes withheld key evidence at his trial that could have led to his acquittal. Lincoln’s plan involves setting up the largest heist the city has ever known, hoping that this will draw his prey to him.
Meanwhile, a hot-headed rookie, Oj (Chen), has joined Hartman’s team and quickly begins to exhibit the same level of shooting skills that made Lincoln such a legend on the force.

Director: Su Chao Pin. Review: Adam Wing. Taiwan writer-director Su Chao Pin (Silk) joins forces with legendary filmmaker John Woo for a period tale about love and freedom. Hang on a minute, I here you say. Surely you mean brotherhood and redemption, right? Surprisingly not, Woo’s latest collaboration steps away from familiar themes and embraces the softer side of life instead. I say softer, there are swordsman, epic battles and countless martial arts showdowns, but for the most part Reign of Assassins throws its arms out to love and sentiment. Who am I kidding? Veteran action director Stephen Tung (Bodyguards and Assassins) is on hand to choreograph the exhilarating stunts, wire-assisted swordplay and epic battles sequences. He’s not so well versed in the art of poetic ballads, so I guess bone-crunching action will have to do then. Action queen Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) takes the leading...

Otherwise known as ‘the one without the red dragon’, Mulan is directed by Jingle Ma (Butterfly Lovers) with Vicki Zhao taking centre stage as the gender-bending heroine Hua Mulan, the filial daughter who famously adopts male guise to take her father's place on the battlefield. Mulan grows into a great warrior while working hard to keep her true identity secret, Aloys Chen (Painted Skin) plays the token love interest and Hu Jun brings pantomime sensibilities to the table as a ruthless leader. Jaycee Chan makes up the numbers as a free-spirited soldier, with CJ7 child actress Xu Jiao, Korean-American Mando-pop singer Nicky Lee, and Russian singer Vitas offering diverse supporting turns with mixed results. I’ve always been a big fan of Vicky Zhao, and she’s probably my first choice of leading lady for this 2009 update. Well, other than Hilary Swank, but I...

In 17th century feudal china fear of uprising has led to an imperial edict calling for the practice of martial arts by citizens to be outlawed. Anybody found to be breaking this law will be punished by decapitation and a bounty will be paid for their head.. However the constant threat of bandit raids has lead many villagers to learn martial arts as a way of defending their crops and homes. “Fire Wind” a former commander of the last regime, who has become a warlord, takes the opportunity to make his fortune. With his three thousand strong army and assortment of vicious lieutenants he begins to slaughter those inhabiting villages where the martial arts are known to be practiced. The Nicholas Robinson Gallery has two interesting shows currently occupying its two-level space this month, each representing figurative art in powerfully different moods.
On the first floor, contemporary Chinese artist Wei Dong's large, fantastical portraits of “fish women” - part cool Asian beauties, part repellent amphibians - are hung expansively, each large canvas alone on a wall. The Chinese-born artist now lives in New Jersey, and his art has elements of both East and West.
