Plot: The marriage of Mark and Anna crumbles, leading to a series of intense arguments, gross-out body horror, brutal murders, and possibly an apocalyptic scenario.
Review: Director Andrzej Żuławski’s 1981 horror film Possession was never a movie that was destined to be embraced by mainstream audiences, but there has always been an audience out there for the film – it has just had difficulty reaching the viewers that would get the most out of watching it. In the United Kingdom, the film was banned as a video nasty. For the U.S. release, forty minutes were whittled out of its 124 minute running time. Home video releases have come along and then gone out of print, and the DVDs and Blu-rays are going for prices some collectors probably aren’t willing to pay for something they’re not familiar with. But now Possession is streaming on the Shudder service, which may be...

Welcome back to another Let’s Scare Bryan to Death! This month, you’re getting a double shot of spooky analysis as I’m joined by not one, but two guests. Liam O’Donnell and Justin Lore are co-hosts of the Horror Business podcast (part of the Cinepunx network), where they take deep dives into movie pairings that range from classics to some that I’ve never even heard of before. After no small amount of discussion (see: arguing) about choosing some movie options for me, they settled on a list that included the 1981 Andrzej Żuławski film, Possession. Now, fair reader, you may be wondering, “Bryan, isn’t that the movie where a woman has sex with an octopus creature?” Yes, it’s that very same film!
If nothing else, morbid curiosity meant I needed to check this one out. Possession stars Sam Neill as Mark, a spy who returns...

It’s certainly possible that most remembrances of the recently deceased Andrzej Żuławski heavily focused on Possession because that’s his only film to leave a notable cultural footprint, yet this should be considered: one title can make such an impact on viewers that, in turn, the creator’s passing becomes an event. We are, after all, talking about the rare work that feels genuinely crazy, flitting from one horror and grotesquerie — and, most importantly, the ideas and emotions they might foster — so fast that most don’t quite know what to do with it once the credits have rolled, save for an utterance along the lines of, “Man, that was nuts.”
If one of Possession‘s most commonly cited powers is the sense that we’re watching an object beamed from another world, a look at its creation should be of great interest. Appropriately titled The Other Side of...

A few weeks ago our UK readers got the good news that Andrzej Zulawski's Possession is on its way to Blu-ray from Second Sight, and today we have a trailer, a couple of stills, and some new artwork to share.
As for why Second Sight made the sleeve change, the company's rep Chris Holden stated, "We were able to access a higher quality theatrical poster image and have decided to stay truer to the original colours. We're really pleased with the result!"
The disc releases with an amazing array of extras on July 29th.

Andrzej Zulawski's Possession is a movie that's pretty hard to track down in its uncut form. Sure, expensive bootlegs are floating around the usual haunts, but our friends across the pond are now Officially getting the goods while we sit on our thumbs here Stateside.

While Ricky, Edgar, Justine and myself work on our pieces about the films that we are most looking forward at this year’s Fantasia Film Festival, I thought that I would talk about the experience that every film-goer to Fantasia experiences: the films that for one reason or another you have to miss.
Sometimes it is because a screening sells out before you can get tickets. That will be especially heart-breaking this year, because in past years, Fantasia has deliberately programmed some Tba screenings so that they could replay films that sold out. This year with 160 feature films there is absolutely no flex, so if a screening sells out, you are probably not going to be able to see the film (at least at Fantasia.)
But even if you are the first person in line to buy tickets and have an unlimited budget, you have to face the fact that...
