Most people think that snobby Oscar voters through the decades have turned their backs on the horror genre. Not so. True, far more horror flicks have been nominated for Oscars — including many Alfred Hitchcock movies — than have won. Hitch was nominated six times for Best Director and never took home a gold statue, which is why he was awarded an Honorary Oscar in 1968. “Thank you,” he said, and walked offstage.
We scoured the record books to find 25 Oscar-winning horror movies, and herewith rank them for you.
After heated arguments among the IndieWire staff, we threw out a dozen or so monster movies (“King Kong,” “Mighty Joe Young,” “Jurassic Park”), ghost films (“Ghost”) and scary psychological thrillers like Hitchcock’s “Spellbound” that just didn’t feel like horror flicks to us.
Defining a horror movie is subjective. Is it about gore and guts and supernatural beings, or how it makes you feel?...

Looking back on this still-young century makes clear that 2007 was a major time for cinematic happenings — and, on the basis of this retrospective, one we’re not quite through with ten years on. One’s mind might quickly flash to a few big titles that will be represented, but it is the plurality of both festival and theatrical premieres that truly surprises: late works from old masters, debuts from filmmakers who’ve since become some of our most-respected artists, and mid-career turning points that didn’t necessarily announce themselves as such at the time. Join us as an assembled team, many of whom were coming of age that year, takes on their favorites.
There are at least two Ridley Scotts working in Hollywood. Ridley Scott, auteur — the man who revolutionized science fiction and horror cinema at the same time with Alien, who single-handedly resurrected the swords-and-sandals epic with Gladiator, who...

You would think with all the talent involved with Universal‘s remake of “Scarface,” it should have no problem getting made. However, the project is beginning to smell like there are too many creative visions that are clashing and the studio doesn’t know what they want.
First, Antoine Fuqua signed up to direct, and Terrence Winter (“The Sopranos,” “Boardwalk Empire“) came into polish the script.

You’ve heard of it, haven’t you? The Golden Age of television? The actual term can be traced back to the early ’50s, when the small screen was teeming with hour-long anthology dramas. By the 2000s, the Golden Age took on a new form to encompass such top-tier series like Mad Men, The Sopranos, Breaking Bad and, more recently, HBO’s ongoing Game of Thrones.
The latter is fast approaching its penultimate season on the airwaves – July 16th is the date for your diaries – and Alex Kurtzman, director and producer of The Mummy, considers Game of Thrones to be a shining example of a property that helps blur the line between film and television. From the sprawling drama to Thrones‘ industry-standard production values, it’s difficult to argue against Kurtzman’s point, and while doing the press rounds for Universal’s eerie reboot/franchise-starter, the filmmaker touched base on Star Trek: Discovery,...

There’s been talk of a Gears of War film almost since the time the first game hit the original Xbox back in the mid-2000s. And it makes sense. The game has a very cinematic style, and its hard-action, testosterone-fueled leads very much lends itself to the medium. Of course, like almost every other video game franchise under the sun, there have been some…delays in the development process.
For whatever reason, an actual Gears of War film has had a hard time getting off the ground. Scripts were written, scripts were rewritten, budgets were raised an scaled back, and every so often we get news of them taking another crack at the franchise. It’s all very much par for the course for most video game adaptations.

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
Even Emma Watson and Tom Hanks May Not Be Enough to Make a Mark As April Ends
The last weekend of April, and the “slower” spring movie season is ending this weekend, leading directly into the start of the lucrative summer box office next week. As has been the case in past years, the last couple weekends in April see a couple movies hoping to bring in any amount of money before the first big summer blockbuster, and other movies that will steal away their theaters. Last weekend was pretty sad, but hopefully a few of this weekend’s movies will fare better.

The latest remake of Scarface has been on the cards for about five years. Martin Bregman, one of the producers of the classic 1983 Al Pacino film, has been working with Universal to develop a new interpretation of the legend and today it was announced that Rogue One’s Diego Luna has been cast in the lead role.
The actor will next be seen in another re-make-quel-boot, Niels Arden Oplev’s new version of Flatliners with Nina Dobrev, Kiefer Sutherland and Ellen Page. Universal’s new Scarface film should propel Luna to a new, wider audience however there’s a good chance Antoine Fuqua won’t be directing him. Variety report that plans to move ahead with a sequel for the 2014 film The Equalizer are moving ahead very quickly, and the desire for a quick sequel has caused conflict in the scheduling.

Deadline is reporting that filmmaker Tim Story, whose credits include Ride Along 2 and Kevin Hart: What Now?, has been elected director on New Line’s Shaft reboot.
Truth be told, it’s the first tangible sign of progress on the studio’s long-gestating redo in quite some time – more than a year ago, New Line brass stressed their desire to reinvent the story of Richard Roundtree’s iconic private eye, favoring drama over comedy and high-octane action – though there’s still no mention of an actor to take on the title role. Gordon Parks first brought the character to the silver screen back in 1971, before Samuel L. Jackson toed the line between cop and criminal in the John Singleton-directed 2000 remake.

Over the years that Den Of Geek has been going, we've regularly been charting the assortment of reboots and remakes that are making their way through the Hollywood system. This, then, is the current state of play. Without further ado, here's what's coming up...

Perhaps the bloodiest rags-to-riches story in cinema history, the saga of Scarface has twice been shown on the silver screen, first with Paul Muni in the role of the criminally savvy immigrant shooting his way to the American Dream, then 50 years later with Al Pacino portraying Tony Montana in the classic Brian De Palma-directed, Oliver Stone-penned version. Now, Universal has announced plans to bring the Scarface story to modern times with a new film penned by Straight Outta Compton screenwriter Jonathan Herman, The Hollywood Reporter writes.

Foxtel is aggressively slashing its prices and repacking its content to try to boost near-stagnant subscriber levels.
Starting in November, the entry level fee will be $25 per month, a 50% reduction, although the basic pack will no longer include Disney, Nickelodeon, FX and Lifestyle You.. The price for most other tiers will drop by about one third..
Platinum subscribers will continue to pay $134 per month so the new pricing structure clearly is pitched at non-subscribers and to encourage those on the cheapest packages to up-scale..
A new entertainment tier comprising more than 40 channels including FOX8, Lifestyle, Tvh!Ts, Arena, MTV, National Geographic, Universal and TCM will be priced at $25 per month.
The sports package will remain at $25 but customers who take the entertainment pack and sport will pay just $50 (currently $74) .
A new drama pack including showcase, BBC First, FX, 13th Street , a new BoxSets channel and VoD will cost $20 on top of the entertainment pack.

Here we are again after the Golden Globes, Mike Fleming and Anita Busch taking on the task of play by play during the most wide-open Oscar race we can remember. Even on the party circuit, industry insiders who usually have a grasp of who’ll walk away with Oscars were evenly torn between Alfonso Cuaron’s 3D masterpiece Gravity and Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave. Then again, there were so many terrific films that got Best Picture nominations, and all of them have at least a puncher’s chance at an upset. Related: Oscars: Pete Hammond’s Absolute Final Predictions That includes American Hustle, where David O Russell co-wrote the Best Original Script nominee with Eric Warren Singer and got tour de force performances and nominations for Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence. Perfs so strong there was no room on the nomination roster for perennial Oscar nominee Jeremy Renner.

Japanese actor Hiroyuki Sanada, recently seen in The Wolverine, is set to co-star opposite Halle Berry in CBS’ upcoming summer drama series Extant, from Steven Spielberg’s Amblin TV and CBS Studios. Created by Mickey Fisher, it centers on an astronaut (Berry) who returns home from a year-long solo mission in space and tries to reconnect with her husband and son in their everyday life. Her experiences in space and home lead to events that ultimately will change the course of human history. Sanada will play a wealthy technological genius who put his wealth to work privatizing the world’s space programs into a single entity. The actor — repped by CAA, Axon Entertainment, Lighthouse Entertainment and Sheppard, Mullin — just finished voicing a character in Universal’s Despicable Me Minions spinoff and will next be seen as the chief Samurai Oishi in Universal Pictures’ 47 Ronin and the Weinstein Co’s The Railway Man.

It's been 15 years since the release of "American History X" (on October 30, 1998), and to this day, the movie stands as a riveting and brutal drama about the persistence of white-supremacist racism in America. It cemented Edward Norton's reputation as the premier Method actor of his generation, and it included at least one scene (the infamous curb-stomp sequence) that's been copied by everyone from "The Sopranos" to "Family Guy."
Yet to this day, many viewers still don't know the often even more dramatic story that went on behind the scenes of the film, in which first-time feature director Tony Kaye fought with Norton and distributor New Line over the final cut of the film. He ultimately filed a $200 million lawsuit because he preferred to be credited as Humpty Dumpty rather than allow the studio's cut to be released under his name. Us film studios unlikely to be chastened by big-budget failures from The Lone Ranger to Elysium and change business model
When Hollywood does Armageddon it tends to be in the form of asteroids, aliens or zombies, with the action on screen. This summer has seen a plethora of such fodder – After Earth, Pacific Rim, Elysium and World War Z – but an arguably more compelling disaster storyline has been unfolding in Hollywood itself.
Mega-budget flops, notably Disney's The Lone Ranger, have hit almost all the major studios, carving hundred-million dollar holes in balance sheets. Box office turkeys are nothing new, but the bad run comes amid evidence that Us audiences are cooling towards 3D – once billed as the saviour of the blockbuster – and warnings from George Lucas and Steven Spielberg that an industry "implosion" owing to big box office crashes will see even established directors frozen out.

For years now — especially since The Sopranos ushered in a new era of smart, complex, visually sumptuous television programming — Hollywood insiders and consumers alike have been saying that TV is a better avenue for gripping, intelligent entertainment than film. (EW actually declared this to be true way back in 1995, four years before David Chase’s mob series debuted.)
And yesterday, two majorly influential voices indicated that they may be joining the pro-tv chorus: George Lucas and Steven Spielberg.
The directors had teamed up for a chat about the state of the film industry at the University of Southern California. (The...

With Fast & Furious 6 on the horizon, we revisit the entire series from beginning to end, and dig out our favourite moments...
It's strange to think that it's well over a decade since the Fast franchise began. But like a juggernaut rolling down a hill, this ageing series shows no sign of slowing down; in fact, this year's Fast & Furious 6 will be joined by yet another sequel, Fast Seven, due out in cinemas next year.
But given that the Fast movies now have such a long history, with various stars fading in and out of them as the past decade has rolled on, perhaps it's a good time to look back at how the series has evolved, and work out how its events will lead up to Fast & Furious 6...

Universal has put a hit out on Brad Grey for allegedly not sharing $50 million or more in profits from The Sopranos. New York -- After "The Sopranos" went black, David Chase's next move was never in question: He would make a movie.
In all Chase's time toiling as a writer in television before "The Sopranos" – decades ranging from "The Rockford Files" to "Northern Exposure" – the big screen had beckoned. It reached back to his days as a teenager taking stills of "8 1/2" and "Dr. Strangelove" (clear touchstones, still: one, Italian and surreal; the other, darkly comic).
After his first stab at writing a psychological thriller went begging, he turned to an idea of his since the `80s, one he occasionally kicked around in the "Sopranos" writers room.
"I love rock `n' roll so much that I really wanted to make a movie about the music, not about the personalities involved, not about the ups and downs or the rise and fall of it," says Chase. "I didn't want to do a biopic.

Rotten Tomatoes: 85% Fresh
Storyline: Based on the novel of the same name by Suzanne Collins, this sci-fi blockbuster stars Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen, a girl living in the post-apocalyptic nation of Panem where 12 boys and 12 girls selected by lottery must fight to the death in the annual Hunger Games. Last week brought Ralph Fiennes’ directorial debut to the shelves in Coriolanus, in which he starred as the eponymous lead alongside Gerard Butler, as well as the likes of Michael Dowse’s Goon, and Madonna’s W.E.
This week has, as ever, a fantastic new selection of films and TV programmes available for purchase from today, including three of my all-time favourite TV programmes. On top of that, there’s an Oscar winner, an Oscar nominee, and one film that everyone was talking about in the run-up to the awards season but was noticeably absent when the Academy Award nominees were announced in January.
My personal picks of the week:
With so much choice, I was forced to divide into two categories of film and TV this week:
James Bobbins’ The Muppets & Clint Eastwood’s J. Edgar
Entourage Season 8, Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 8 & One Tree Hill Season 9

Like it or not, filmmaking is undeniably a director's medium. It wasn't always like that, of course: it was only the coming of the auteur theory in the 1950s and 1960s that popularized the idea of the director as the person responsible for all that was great and terrible about a picture. And while anyone who's worked in film knows that it's a collaborative medium, there's still no better way of seeing where the form might be going in the next few years than by looking at the directors who've been making splashes of late.
So, hot on the heels of our On The Rise pieces focusing on actors, actresses and screenwriters, we've picked out ten directors who've arrived in a big way in the last year or so, and look set for even greater things in the near future. Any tips of your own? Let us know in the comments section below.

Here are a few interesting and/or noteworthy projects that were recently added to IMDbPro's database of development titles:
The Rockford Files – Vince Vaughn stars in a produces this feature adaptation of the popular 1970s detective show, which starred James Garner as the titular grizzled private eye. The project is set up at Universal and Vaughn's Wild West Picture Show.
Agent 13 – Charlize Theron and Rise of the Planet of the Apes director Rupert Wyatt team up for this sci-fi thriller based on a little-known comic book series from the late '80s. The project was picked up by Universal and will be written by T.S. Nowlin.
Mr. Toad's Wild Ride – Arguably one of the most admired attractions in Disneyland's Fantasyland amusement park is based on half of a film that most kids have never even heard of. But, that's about to change thanks to Peter Candeland, who's been tasked by the mouse house to develop the classic children's tale into its very own feature film.
The General – Many monuments and memorials have been made to honor the USA's most famous founding father, but nary a memorable movie. Now, Darren Arronofsky, who's currently planning the biblical film, Noah, has set his sights on the first president as his next project. He'll develop the film via his Protozoa Pictures production company.
The Disappointments Room – Prison Break and Resident Evil: Afterlife star Wentworth Miller is carving out quite the second act to his Hollywood career as a screenwriter with a couple of scripts already in active development. His most recent is this thriller about a family that moves into a haunted house in the country, which was picked up by Killer Films and is currently out to directors.

Update: I've already realized I forgot to add Andrew Dominik's Killing Them Softly and John Hillcoat's The Wettest County to this list. That would make 27. I haven't yet gotten around to cleaning up "The Contenders" section of the site just yet and while some may argue it's too early to look toward the 2013 Oscars considering we just closed the book on the 2012 Oscar ceremony I have to kindly disagree. If for no other reason, looking at films that might be vying for Best Picture next year we get to sort through a bunch of films that may end up being considered the year's best. What's wrong with that? Granted, as is often the case when looking this far into the future, several of these films may end up being duds. Some may not actually hit theaters in 2012 (though most do have established release dates) and others just might...

Universal clearly is excited about director Oliver Stone's adaptation of Savages, as the studio has moved the release date from September 28th to July 6th, the middle of the summer movie season. Deadline reports that the studio made the move after seeing an early version late last week, and apparently think it's strong enough to contend with The Amazing Spider-Man, which opens July 3rd.
Based on the novel by Don Winslow, Savages follows two marijuana growers named Ben (Aaron Johnson, Kick-Ass) and Chon (Taylor Kitsch, X-Men Origins: Wolverine) whose girlfriend (Blake Lively, Green Lantern) is kidnapped by a Mexican drug cartel, and the pair decide to pay the ransom by stealing the cartel's shipments. Winslow co-wrote the script with Stone and Shane Salerno (Shaft) and also wrote a Savages prequel novel that could have its release date moved up to coincide with the movie's opening.

With Manhunter out now on Blu-ray, we had the chance to talk to Brian Cox, who played the first big-screen incarnation of Hannibal the Cannibal…
Barely creating a financial ripple at the box-office in 1986, Manhunter has since become regarded as a cult classic. Later adaptations of Thomas Harris’ books would be far more successful, and Sir Anthony Hopkins’ portrayal of gentleman serial killer Hannibal Lecter became a screen icon. But Michael Mann’s earlier film, his personal take on the 1980 novel Red Dragon, stood in stark contrast.
By turns quiet and ferocious, the tone and pace of Manhunter is exemplified in Brian Cox’s understated turn as Hannibal. His version of the caged sociopath is cool and wryly intelligent, cunning and frighteningly intuitive. Where Hopkins’ performance was perfect for Jonathan Demme’s grand, horror-laced Silence Of The Lambs, Cox is equally remarkable in the subtle, seductive Manhunter.

After the success of “The Fast and the Furious” in 2001, producers were quick to put the pedal to the medal on a follow-up. Although several members of the original cast walked away from a sequel, the producers pulled together a potent blend of original stars and talented newcomers to the franchise to turn this franchise’s sprint into a marathon.
The "Furious" Rundown
In “2 Fast 2 Furious,” Walker’s character of Brian O’Conner is on the run from the law after giving Vin Diesel’s character a pass. O’Conner travels cross-country to the high-life of Miami Beach to make a new life on the illegal street racing scene. Despite a talented new crew, the rogue ex-cop finds...

Durham, Nc - The hard truth of cinema takes place at the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival in Durham, Nc from April 14-17. That’s four solid days of movies that don’t feature Natalie Portman’s face being digitally inserted on other bodies. Four days of real people doing real stuff. And you can get some great BBQ.
This years line up has enough goodness to make me have to make painful choices as what to watch. There’s only one screening unless a movie wins a major prize. It’s be there or miss out. Choice wisely. Here’s a few of the films I’m looking to catch:
The Hangman (Thursday 10:20 a.m.) appears to be a creepy classic as it probes the man who executed Nazi Adolph Eichmann. What’s he do now? He ritually slaughters animals. Windfall (Thurs 4:20 p.m.) takes us to Meredith,...

Director David O. Keating recently did some press with Film Shaft for his Hammer Films release Wake Wood , which is opening across the pond soon. When asked what was next on his schedule, Keating revealed he has a few horror projects planned, however, he's presently at work on a documentary about a knife thrower and his assistant. As for his dream gig, he says, "I'd like to do a Hammer remake of Cat People with Imogen Poots." Hmm, did he potentially see Shock's exclusive report that Universal was developing a new Cat People film? Poots would be a decent cat gal. You'll see her next in Fright Night and Hideo Nakata's Chatroom .

Bella Heathcote. Never heard of her? You will: the Australian actress is coming at moviegoers like a freight train. she's a name in her native Australia where she starred on the popular soap "Neighbours" (just like Liam Hemsworth) and she was awarded the Australian Film Industry's Heath Ledger scholarship: a chance to travel to and live in the United States to pursue acting roles. Heathcote is currently filming Now with Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried, Olivia Wilde, Alex Pettyfer and Cillian Murphy. She's just booked the lead role in director David Chase's (the creator and writer of HBO's "The Sopranos") Twylight Zone for Paramount about a group of 1960s-era classmates who form a band that makes it to superstardom. Heathcote has taken a supporting role in the Brad Pitt-starrer Cogan's Trade. And...she is on the short list to play Snow White in Universal's Snow White and the Huntsman.

Chicago – As more and more homes become HD-enabled, the Blu-ray market has finally started to expand to the point that it’s getting difficult to narrow a list of the best releases down to only ten. But that’s what we’re here for — to do the difficult jobs. These are the ten best Blu-rays of 2010.
The most notable trend in Blu-ray in 2010 was the treatment of classic films and television. Several major studios found new ways to pull classic gems from the vault, put them in new HD settings, and remind people why they fell in love with them in the first place. The Criterion Collection continued to lead the way when it came to classics, but Warner Bros. and Universal deserve some praise (and earned a few spots on the list below).
Was it a banner year for classics or a disappointing one for modern releases? Does 70% of...

Between them, they have nearly a century’s worth of TV programming experience, and were part of a generation of Home Box Office management which helped turn company into the premier subscription television service not only in the U.S., but in the world. Their longevity has given them the opportunity to live through their company’s change from a raucously-growing enterprise to a mature business, evolving from what had primarily been a movie service to a programmer just as identified with such acclaimed, high-profile original programming as The Sopranos, Band of Brothers, True Blood, and, most recently, Boardwalk Empire.
Still, they have spent most of their professional lives dealing with movies. A production executive at a major studio might deal with two dozen released films a year. Programmers at HBO (and its sister channel Cinemax) easily deal with over a thousand. They appraise them, try to understand what people...

On-demand viewing and the digital games revolution take their toll on DVD and Blu-ray
Spare a thought this Christmas for James Bond, kicking his heels at MI6 and getting under M's feet. Daniel Craig was forced to holster his Walther Ppk when Bond 23 was put on hold following the bankruptcy of MGM, under a mountain of debt. The studio's woes were in considerable part the fallout from a phenomenon that threatens not just Hollywood blockbusters but the continuing supply of high-end, home-produced drama and comedy: a sales slump, which may prove terminal, in the once all-conquering DVD home entertainment market.
The DVD, the fastest-adopted electronic consumer product at its commercial introduction in 1998, became the film studios' biggest cash generator, funding a screen production boom. The industry generated $14bn (£9bn) by 2004, with more than 250m discs sold each year in the UK. Broadcasters shared in the windfall as living room...
