We're living in a golden age of anime distribution. It's never been easier to access anime both old and new, be they movies or TV shows. Long gone are the days where you'd have to shell out hundreds of dollars for a VHS that only contained a couple of episodes, or seek out bootleg YouTube videos that split up every episode into tiny chunks (with the risk of one of the parts getting taken down) with fansubs that weren't totally accurate. Nowadays, anime movies get wide distribution in theaters across the United States, they get big marketing campaigns with Time Square promos, and they often top the box office.
This made the fact that "Evangelion 3.0+1.0: Thrice Upon a Time," the last of the "Rebuild of Evangelion" movies, was dumped into streaming with barely any notice or promotion quite a tragedy. The movie had already been a huge hit in Japanese theaters,...

Emerging stars from Netflix Japan’s biggest original shows have revealed their experiences working with the streamer today at the final Tudum event of the past 24 hours.
Netflix is involved in a fierce battle for streaming supremacy in Japan with Amazon, Disney+ and others, and today’s event was a chance to show off its firepower.
As such, it held interviews with five up-and-coming stars from the Asian country at their Netflix Tudum event: Kento Yamazaki and Tao Tsuchiya, who play Arisu and Usagi from Alice in Borderland, appeared at the event alongside Nana Mori and Natsuki Deguchi, who play Kiyo and Sumire from The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House, and voice actress Fairouz Ai, who plays Jolyne Cujoh in the upcoming JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: Stone Ocean.

One of the biggest anime franchises of all time came to an end last year. Hideaki Anno's masterpiece, "Neon Genesis Evangelion" finally ended its story after 26 years with "Evangelion: 3.0+1.01 Thrice Upon a Time," the long-delayed final film in the "Rebuild of Evangelion" quadrilogy of films meant to retell the story of the acclaimed TV anime.
It is hard to even begin to explain the (Third) impact "Evangelion" has had on pop culture. Originally an emotionally complex but still relatively familiar mecha anime heavily inspired by tokusatsu shows like "Ultraman," Anno's "Neon Genesis Evangelion" took a hard left turn when its creator was hit with depression halfway through production.
Add a tight budget that was quickly emptying out, and Anno decided to abandon the original idea for the show, and instead turn it into a fascinating, experimental exploration of the human psyche, what it means to be alive and happy,...

The greatest sci-fi franchise of our lifetime is not Star Wars, Star Trek, and certainly not anything in the comic realm. It’s The Matrix, obviously, and we positively cannot wait for Lana Wachowski’s fourth installment this December—but second place, and actually germane to this article, belongs to Hideaki Anno’s Neon Genesis Evangelion, a 26-episode anime, his follow-up feature The End of Evangelion, (both streaming on Netflix), and subsequent series of remakes / remixes, Rebuild of Evangelion (about which more here).
After years of delays both creative and Covid, the final installment Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time—supposedly the very last Evangelion title to which Anno will put his name; he’s since moved on to other things—finally arrived in Japan earlier this year, breaking their box-office records in a second. Its future elsewhere remained uncertain until today: the film, whose new title Evangelion: 3.0+1.01 suggests a...

Skrillex and Hikaru Utada teamed up for “Face My Fears” and have released its video. The euphoric song serves as the opening theme for the recently released video game, Kingdom Hearts 3, part of the long-running Square Enix and Disney franchise.
The new visual comprises gameplay footage cuts interspersed with other clips featured in Kingdom Hearts 3. It serves as a nostalgic, heartwarming trip down animated character lane. A host of Disney character favorites flash by from several eras, including characters from Toy Story and Monsters Inc. as well as Mickey Mouse,...

Kingdom Hearts most iconic artist is making a comeback, and Hikaru Utada has brought Skrillex along for the ride for the new Kingdom Hearts 3 theme song! In case you happen to be in Japan today, be sure to blow a kiss to Hikaru Utada, who turns 27 years old today. Not sure who Utada (as she is known professionally) is? She's one of the biggest pop stars in the world, and has been described as "the Japanese Britney Spears." She has sold more than 70 million albums worldwide, and though she hasn't yet fully penetrated the American pop market, she is familiar to anybody who has played the PlayStation game "Kingdom Hearts 2." The song "Sanctuary," as blissful a tune as pop can get, plays during the opening montage in the game (which tells the story of the first "Kingdom Hearts").
In 2009, Utada made her boldest entry into the American music world yet when she dropped This is the One, her third English album and eighth overall. It's a collection of rugged tunes that mix Japanese dance music, sharp...

A Note from the Flying Monkey: I recently wrote how weird it is that, completely coincidentally, I often get a bunch of questions all at the same time clustered around a central theme. Well, almost every question I received this week had something to do with music. Check it out!
Q: Oh, Great Flying Simian Even Smarter Than the Only Other Smart Monkey I Can Think Of, Doctor Zaius: You might not have heard about it because it was very hush-hush, but Adam Lambert kissed his keyboardist during a performance at the American Music Awards. Supposedly, it wasn’t rehearsed, but done “in the moment.” So what does the keyboardist think – and is he gay? – Martin, U.S. Virgin Islands

This week, one of the greatest anime series of all time will be revisited. On Tuesday, November 17th, Funimation is scheduled to release Evangelion 1.01. Subtitled “You Are (Not) Alone”, this new chapter marks a major reversioning for the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise.
Eva has been getting reworked from the beginning. The ending for the original series drew a firestorm of controversy, with its lackluster production and anti-climactic conclusion. “Death and Rebirth” and “End of Evangelion”, two feature length films meant to provide a more satisfying resolution, did more to fan the flames than to quench them.
In the meantime, there have been no end of spin offs — some official, some totally fan based — which involve everything from Angelic Days’ retelling of the series from the dream world point of view Shinji imagined in the conclusion to the original series to weird little productions like the “Ayanami Raising Simulator”, a dating...

More news from the Pusan fest
TOKYO -- Digital download sales of songs by Hikaru Utada to the end of September have already hit nearly 10.5 million according to EMI Japan, the first artist worldwide to break the 10 million mark in a single year.
Digital downloads, which in Japan are dominated by contents for the mobile phone market, amounted to 10,491,000 from January to September, selling more in nine months than anyone has managed in a year.
The song 'Beautiful World' has been downloaded over 800,000 times, boosted by its inclusion in the movie "Evangelion 1.0 You are (not) alone". The tune is used for the closing credits of the new cinematic version of Hideaki Anno's anime classic, which has been chosen to close the Pusan International Film Festival after a huge opening in Japan last month.
"We know that" Beautiful World" sales were helped by the release of "Evangelion" because at weekends after young people have been to see the movie, there is a huge rush of downloads," said Nozomu Kaji from EMI Japan.
