In 2014, Naomi Watts voiced an animated version of herself in the “BoJack Horseman” episode “One Trick Pony.” The Watts in Hollywoo — the “BoJack” stand-in for the entertainment industry’s epicenter, inhabited mostly by anthropomorphic animals — is starring opposite BoJack in a biopic about his frenemy, Mr. Peanutbutter. She appears on set preparing to play Diane, a burgeoning writer. The meta joke is the actress accepted the part to get a break from emotionally draining, praiseworthy performances.
“I just keep getting pigeonholed as these complex characters in highly acclaimed movies,” the animated Watts bemoans to a character who is a parody of host Ryan Seacrest (A Ryan Seacrest Type). “For once, I would just love to phone it in and play a two-dimensional girl in a rom-com with no inner life of her own. That’s kind of the reason I got into this business.”
Ten years later, that tongue-in-cheek guest appearance now feels almost prophetic.

When we meet some actors in comedies, we form a particular opinion about their acting skills and whatever they are capable of. For example, there’s nothing more suitable for each other than Adam Sandler and romantic comedies. But if you see him playing in Uncut Gems you’ll see that he is much more than you give him credit for.
The same goes about, for example, Emily Blunt. Despite the fact that she has been in a handful of rather serious movies, the first role that comes to mind when thinking about the actress is without doubt her role of Miranda Priestly’s assistant in the Devil Wears Prada.
Yes, she has come a long way since that, earning her an Oscar nomination for Oppenheimer, but there’s a movie with her in a leading role that can be easily chosen as the one where she gave her best performance.

Natalie Portman is taking a page out of her “Jackie” days and venturing back to the 1960s — this time, to investigate a murder.
The Oscar winner leads Apple TV+ limited series “Lady in the Lake,” based on Laura Lippman’s novel of the same name. “Honey Boy” filmmaker Alma Har’el penned the pilot and will co-write the rest of the series with Dre Ryan (“The Man in the High Castle”); Har’el will also direct.
Portman plays housewife-turned-reporter Maddie Schwartz as she pursues the case of a missing woman named Cleo Sherwood (Moses Ingram), whose body was found in a city park lake. As Cleo’s ghost follows Maddie on her quest to uncover the mystery of her death, the two women’s lives become intertwined. The first-look photo of the series is above.
Y’lan Noel, Brett Gelman, Byron Bowers, Noah Jupe, Josiah Cross, Mikey Madison, and Pruitt Taylor Vince also star.

Quebec’s recent domestic box office charmers “One Summer” and “Ru” lead Canada’s diverse acquisition slate of 17 features — many coming off strong, award-speckled festival runs — screening for buyers at the Berlinale’s European Film Market.
More than half the 20 Canadian titles screening across the EFM and festival are Quebec productions, a ratio that reflects the resilience of the province’s film industry, not to mention the next wave of filmmaking talent and the return of Quebec audiences to cinemas.
“Ru,” an adaptation of Vietnamese-born Canadian novelist Kim Thúy’s prize-winning, widely translated 2009 novel, is nearing the $2 million mark in Canada and is the latest in a string of Quebec films to earn more than $1 million at the domestic box office in 2023.

Kathryn Newton Talks ‘Lisa Frankenstein,’ Young Avengers, ‘Big Little Lies 3’ and ‘Freaky Death Day’
Kathryn Newton’s feature film career continues to bear fruit.
Just five years ago, she was a series regular on two hit television series, HBO’s Big Little Lies and Netflix’s The Society, but when the pandemic played a role in the un-renewal of the latter, Newton wasted no time amassing an impressive slate of films. First up was Christopher Landon’s well-received slasher comedy, Freaky, that made three times its $6 million production budget during the height of the pandemic. She then followed that up with Ian Samuels’ hidden time-loop gem, The Map of Tiny Perfect Things, on Amazon Prime Video. In between these two films, she also received a career-altering offer to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Ant-Man’s daughter, Cassie Lang, beginning with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023) and potentially a Young Avengers movie at some point.

HBO’s Big Little Lies was never supposed to be more than a limited series.
But when you have a cast as talented as this in one place and creatives behind the screen who can capitalize on what makes the show work, expansion makes sense.
But if you had told us in 2019, when Big Little Lies Season 2 took its final bow, that five years later, another season could very well be on the way, we would have been skeptical.
Yet, here we are.

It’s been more than four years since Season 2 of HBO’s Big Little Lies. Over that time, the prospect of another installment has occasionally come up, with the network and the core team behind the series largely non-committal but leaving the door open. Star and executive producer Nicole Kidman on Friday gave the strongest indication to date that a third season may be happening.
“I loved Big Little Lies,” she said during a Q&a at the Cme Group Tour Championship, adding, “We will be bringing you a third one, just Fyi.”
The casual remark has fueled speculation that a new installment may finally be coming together. According to sources, there are no real conversations going on right now but there appears to be an intent to get more Big Little Liars underway.

Black Label Media, consisting of sisters Molly and Rachel Smith and twin brothers Trent and Thad Luckinbill, have returned to the screen with their calling card: a Benicio Del Toro-led crime thriller.
The independent production and finance company, most known for producing the Sicario films and co-financing La La Land, is set to release Grant Singer’s Reptile this Friday on Netflix, and it’s another example of Black Label’s commitment to preserving mid-budget films, as well as genres that are less prioritized now by the major studios.
Knowing how Del Toro works from their previous two Sicario films, Black Label teamed him up early with Reptile co-writer/director Singer and co-writer Benjamin Brewer, so that he didn’t have to present his own rewrites and suggestions during production. And due to the pandemic shutdown, the added collaboration time has now resulted in Del Toro’s first co-writing credit on a feature film.

Toronto: “Humanist Vampire,” “Solo” Heat Up Market for Toronto’s Quebec Feature Slate
By Jennie Punter
Toronto has long been a go-to place for Quebec filmmakers to launch new work, connect directly to the U.S. marketplace and, by extension, propel their careers to the next level — Denis Villeneuve, Phillippe Falardeau and Jean-Marc Vallée, for example, premiered most of their early films here.
Many of this year’s bumper crop of mostly world-premiering Quebec titles explore less familiar corners of society — First Peoples and newcomer stories, the drag scene — and there are also fresh takes on romantic dramedy (Monia Chokri’s “The Nature of Love”), true-story-inspired WWII drama (Louise Archambault’s “Irena’s Vow”) and horror comedy.
Five of the festival’s eight Quebec features are directed by women. Sophie Dupuis, whose third film, the drag-scene character study “Solo,” told Variety that support from government funding agencies Telefilm and Sodec (Quebec...

Whenever a producer in recent times has exited their partnership with a star, quite often said producer’s output is not as robust.
It’s a different situation for Bruna Papandrea, who after peeling off from Reese Witherspoon’s Pacific Standard Production Company has been on quite a roll with such TV hits as HBO’s The Undoing, Netflix’s Anatomy of a Scandal and Luckiest Girl Alive, Hulu’s Nine Perfect Strangers and now the Prime Video limited series The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart based on Holly Ringland’s novel. This is all under Papandrea’s six-year-old production banner Made Up Stories, which is devoted to female-centric stories.
On today’s Crew Call podcast, we talk with Papandrea about why she went solo with Made Up Stories, the genesis of The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart, and more.
Lost Flowers of Alice Hart follows the story of the title protagonist.

Season 2 of "Big Little Lies" (in 2019) ended with an explosive reveal, one that undoubtedly helped result in the highest viewership the series had seen. The Monterey Five, made up of Reese Witherspoon's Madeline Mackenzie, Nicole Kidman's Celeste Wright, Shailene Woodley's Jane Chapman, Laura Dern's Renata Klein, and Zoë Kravitz's Bonnie Carlson, ostensibly put their titular lie to bed. In the finale, after suffering through a season of guilt and repressed rage stemming from their involvement in and subsequent cover-up of Perry Wright's (Alexander Skarsgård) death, all five women walk together to the Monterey police station, presumptively going inside to confess.
The series ends there, though for sticklers it concluded a season before when the show wrapped the story contained in source author Liane Moriarty's original novel. The cover-up, Meryl Streep's ferocious mother-in-law Mary Louise — all of that was fiction stemming from fiction.

Sydney Sweeney is adding the title of screenwriter to her multi-hyphenate talents.
The “Euphoria” and “White Lotus” Emmy nominee revealed in a Variety cover story that she wrote a screenplay during the Covid lockdown. However, the script most likely will not be brought to the big screen anytime soon.
“I think it was a little too complicated for people to wrap their heads around,” Sweeney said. “It was cool and it was beautiful and it was bittersweet, but I look at it now as just a really cool exercise that I had for myself.”
The actress, who is making her producing debut with upcoming rom-com “Anyone but You” under her Fifty-Fifty production banner, added that she finds “power in my femininity” and defying expectations based on her appearance in Hollywood.

It’s a hot Thursday afternoon in Los Angeles, but Sydney Sweeney, balancing on a block of ice, is keeping her cool.
Sweeney — the 25-year-old star of “Euphoria,” “Reality” and now this photo shoot — is clad in just a hot-pink swimsuit and matching heels as she kneels on the frozen surface; despite the chill, she betrays not a hint of discomfort. Her entourage, which today includes her father, Steven, huddle around monitors to observe a master at work.
Suddenly, the performance switches off, and she leaps up shrieking, letting out giggles and shivering. She recalls the moment two weeks later at a tea shop in New York City (and three weeks before SAG-AFTRA goes on strike). “I love when they let us play,” she says.
Luckily, as one of the most prodigious actors of her generation, that’s Sweeney’s job. On set with us, she is a ’90s-throwback magazine queen,...

You may not readily group Cheryl Strayed with Elizabeth II, Elvis Presley or Annie Wilkes, but the self-help author could soon have at least one thing in common with them. If Kathryn Hahn (“Tiny Beautiful Things”) receives an Emmy nomination for playing a version of the role that nabbed Reese Witherspoon (“Wild”) an Oscar bid in 2015, Strayed will join that list of real and fictional personas whose depictions have garnered multiple actors awards recognition across media.
Two-time Emmy winner Merritt Wever could also crash the Best Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actress race for playing Strayed’s mother, a role that earned Laura Dern her second Oscar nomination. According to Gold Derby’s Emmy odds, the two are safer bets than the show itself, which has yet to crack the Limited Series top 10.

Every year at the Sundance Film Festival, there are always dozens of films to anticipate, but then there’s the elite dozen or so, the ones that really get you excited for what they might offer. And arguably, the new indie drama “The Starling Girl,” starring rising star Eliza Scanlen was one of them.
Scanlen is a real rising star and broke out in a big way in 2018’s “Sharp Objects,” where she played a troubled teen and the younger version of Amy Adams in an HBO series directed by the late Jean-Marc Vallée.

Cheryl Strayed likes getting to know people, so perhaps it shouldn’t have been all that surprising when she began our interview by directing questions at me. The vaunted author, screenwriter, columnist, and podcast host wrapped her preceding press assignment a few minutes early, and rather than enjoying some alone time during a busy day at Austin’s SXSW Festival — where she later co-led a featured talk with “Tiny Beautiful Things” showrunner Liz Tigelaar — Strayed invited me to her table. Pleasantries were exchanged, coffee ordered, and the weather commented upon, but before five minutes passed, the consummate conversationalist had me speaking openly about my parents, relationships, and career.
It’s a strange feeling to hear the topics you’ve been sent to elicit from someone else come tumbling out of your own mouth, but Strayed likely has a similar reaction when fielding questions from reporters. While no stranger to sharing...

Kathryn Hahn has a type. Since starring in Joey Soloway’s “Afternoon Delight” in 2013, the actor has spent a decade delivering nuanced portrayals of messy, horny, hilarious women who bluster their way through middle age. It is a miracle of modern television that Hahn’s hyper-specific specialty has supported three separate series: “I Love Dick,” also helmed by Soloway; “Mrs. Fletcher”; and now, “Tiny Beautiful Things.”
Created by Liz Tigelaar of “Little Fires Everywhere,” the Hulu half-hour casts Hahn as a fictional version of Cheryl Strayed, the memoirist and advice columnist who rose to fame by blending both forms into one. The show is adapted from the 2012 book of the same name, a collection of essays Strayed first published under the moniker Dear Sugar. Strayed met her readers’ deeply personal disclosures with some of her own, sharing her experience with addiction, grief and abuse in long missives more meandering and literary than straightforward tips.

Back in 2020, Halsey fans were overjoyed when they learned that the singer was planning to make their acting debut. The “Ghost” singer revealed that she was planning to collaborate with her good friend, Sydney Sweeney, on a miniseries called The Players Table. However, it’s been 2.5 years since the HBO Max series was announced, and it has yet to be filmed. So what is the reason for the delay?
‘The Players Table’ star Halsey | Jon Kopaloff/Getty Images for Tiffany & Co. How Halsey joined ‘The Players Table’ cast
But just how did Halsey get cast in The Players Table without any acting experience? A lot of it is due to her friendship with Sweeney. After Sweeney read They Wish They Were Us (the book that The Players Table is based on) she knew wanted to make a show about it. After acquiring the rights, she thought about how she...

Yoko Ono and John Lennon’s marriage may be the stuff of rock ‘n roll history, but new details of an affair are shedding light on the eccentric partnership.
Former employee May Pang exposes her extramarital relationship with late Beatle Lennon, alleging the two dated for 18 months during his marriage to Ono. Documentary “The Lost Weekend: A Love Story” features interviews with Pang, Ono’s son Julian Lennon, and archived footage of Lennon himself calling the idea of his affair with Pang “ridiculous.”
Pang was 19 years old when she began working at Apple Records and soon started an affair with Lennon while employed as his and Ono’s personal assistant. Ono’s rocky marriage to Lennon inspired her to ask Pang to be intimate with her husband. Ono and Lennon were married in 1969, one year before the Beatles disbanded in 1970. Lennon later was shot and killed in 1980.
