Principal Bass and Veteran of the English National Opera in England.
He was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in the
2002 Queen's New Years Honours list for his services to Music.
His final appearance was in 2006 at Glyndebourne in "Die Fledermaus".
His Royal Opera (London) debut role was the Mandarin in "Turandot" in 1971. He played the Count in "Manon" for his Metropolitan Opera (NY) debut in 1987.
He made his professional debut with Sussex Opera (UK) in 1964. He sang his first major role at the Glyndebourne Festival in 1967, in Francesco Cavalli's "L'Ormindo".
He was director of Britain's National Opera Studio 1986-2001.
