- Documentary filmmaker, graduate of the University of California. Collaborated as co-cinematographer with Pare Lorentz on The River (1938). Directed his first documentary, The City (1939), the following year. Subsequently spent the war years working for the overseas film department of the Office of War Information. Headed the Museum of Modern Art film department between 1965-73.
